Last year's savior unjustly kept on the bench by stubborn ole Cal. I heard this year it will be Jemarl.
No one said unjustly but no one knows what the hell was going on and we do know that Cal plays favorites. If you dont know that then I cannot help you. I can explain it to you but cannot make you understand it.

You're just guessing.

I hope you don't really think that SKJ not playing last season had anything to do with his play.
NBA scout after NBA scout would leave our practices all season long and say that SKJ was the best player on the team. Our players would say the same thing in interviews all the way thru the end of the season. Whatever the reason was that SKJ didn't see the floor at all for the second half of the season, be it an injury or an academic or discipline issue, it had Nothing to do with his tallent and skill or playing ability.

Can you cite to any source on this?

SKJ was never close to the best player on the team.

A friend of mine went to the open practice in Memphis during the tournament and said that SKJ was one of the best players on the floor during that particular practice. Maybe he played out of his mind that day and that wasn't the norm. This guys isn't like me, just an average Joe, he played college ball so he would know.

Said he has heard too much from Zion about Kentucky for him to believe anything else. Said until he hears from Zion something different he is assuming Kentucky with all the connections.

With Barrett it was interesting. He used Knox and Randle as examples of how the coaches felt they were Kentucky leans even though national experts felt differently. Said the only time staff was genuinely surprised when they thought they were getting somebody and didn't was with Shabazz. Until he hears coaches believe otherwise he thinks UK leads for RJ.

Zion and RJ potentially leaning UK will upset a couple particular posters on this board. They only post, comment etc when Duke ends up getting a recruit we want.

If they choose UK? It'll be crickets ... or they'll find something to complain about

If they choose Duke? Look out- thread after thread and comment after comment and "like" after "like" talking about how far behind we are and how Duke is the king etc etc .

It absolutely had everything to do with his play last year. SKJ will have to improve leaps and bounds to get more than mop up minutes. And with all the other talent on the team I doubt he's gonna see to much game time.

Can you link (honestly curious ) the reports etc that says Nba scout after NBA scout said SKJ was the best player on the team last year? I like the kid but that's absolutely false

If He was the "best player on the team" and supposedly several NBA scouts and several players ( I don't remember seeing all our players saying he was the best player on the team... link?) then he would have been playing.

Better than fox? Monk? Bam? And he sits the bench? Nah... no way.

There was also a practice report, unless I'm wrong about that. MJ is no recruiting expert
Not saying he's an expert but he does have sources close to the team that feeds him info. You can deny that if you want but you'd be wrong. Cal comes on his show from time to time. You think Cal doesn't let him know things he wants to make known?

You think Cal is whispering in his ear all the players we lead for? I don't

Then you are either stupid or just a hater. Cal may not whisper every recruit but I bet he does the big ones. Jones is right about recruits more often than he is wrong.

For the 1 millionth time.

Jones has sources to UL and U.K. but not the recruiting scene. College coaches are some of the worst sources to have when the information you want is also about the team they coach.

Is what it is.

Oh and btw, Calipari was notorious at Memphis for using guys like MJ to get a point out, so I'm sure he has a lower level assistant feed Jones to feed us. But it's going to be basic or a "heads up" about a recruit Cal already knows he's got. Won't be anything in depth. That's essentially what MJ probably is to Cal. Media guy to feed the masses mainly fluff.

Cal actually used an assistant to keep up with Memphis message boards and fan opinion. I'd bet a million Cal is well aware of what's happening on rafters.

Examples?

I'm not sure I remember him being wrong when he's confident. People very close to the program do let Matt know things from time to time.

He was sure correct on Bamba NOT coming here. Franklin insisted he was, Jones had a team member that knew Bamba that told him it wasn't going to happen.

He was correct on Randle when most analysts were pinning KU the destination, until the last hour.

He was correct on saying we had a good shot at Knox regardless everyone else, even UK insiders, giving up on Knox.

I'm not a huge MJ fan but let's not get carried away & say he doesn't talk to people in the know.

I don't worship him, but I def thinks he has sources.

Isn't there a middle ground ? Like you don't necessarily have to be a "worshiper" bc one thinks he may have inside scoops from time to time.

Not saying he doesn't know ppl in the know, just that saying we "lead" for Barrett and Zion is A) something that can change Day to day B) Has people thinking we're in some huge vantage point in very open recruitments. Not saying Barrett and Zion won't be here. I'm not just going to jump for joy bc MJ said it. I remember him saying we're leading for Zimmerman Newman brown, he even said we were leading for Bamba forever. I'm sure someone told him "things look good for X Y and Z" but as @morgousky said it's mostly fluff for our fan base. Kind of like how KU fans think they will get everyone bc they blow smoke everywhere. When was the last time MJ said we weren't "Leading" or "In the mix", he won't bc it doesn't get him hits on his website.

I think SKJ does play & contribute. Say 8-12 mpg at the 5. Richards gets 15-18 mpg there, Wynyard gets a couple at the end of games, and the remaining 8-15 mpg we get from the 3F option.

You will never convince some of these morons on this board of that.. I agree with you on SKJ.
you know, I've read this thread twice now looking for anything that might cause a reasonable person to use the word "moron" to describe a response. Can't find it. Why do that? What is it about keyboards that make people talk in a way they don't normally talk?

He also was one of the few UK "insiders" that was never confident Wiggins would be a Cat.

Some (okay, many) people take this site WAY too seriously. There are threads on here for people who want to relive great moments. There are threads on here for people who want to obsess about the future and recruiting. There are threads about all kinds of things. For that reason, you should never go into a thread and talk about how stupid it is and how moronic someone's opinion in it is. Unless someone is ripping on one of the players or saying something that could hurt the team.

I don't think I would like Matt Jones if I met him. He seems to be his own biggest fan. But he's gotten enough inside info right that he's worth reading about on here. I'm not taking it to the bank that we get Zion and Barrett. But it's good to hear that someone thinks that's happening based on what he's hearing. Not sure why there's any controversy in that.

Jones knows more than the average Joe, and *does* have contacts within the staff but he is not always right.

Recruiting info has become such a crap shoot that I am not sure anyone has any creditable knowledge of what is or isn't going on. the interesting part of Jones' statements seems to me to be that Gabriel isn't mentioned in the top 4 "best" players. His comments on Knox aren't surprising,I feel like Knox is getting overlooked a bit,it is way too early to have any idea who may emerge as "the man" on this team.

I think it is possible that we don't have a player who will be drafted in the top 10 in next years draft,we have a bunch of really good players but not any great ones. This team could really resemble one of Cal's Memphis teams much more than it does any of his UK teams.

I think we have less of an idea what this team will look like or who will be what than in any of Cal's past UK teams. There seems to be less information out there than in years past

SKJ may be a lot better than we think. None of us have seen him play very much at all. What if, What if he is really good and Cal did not play him due to some issues that none of us know about. Wow! That would be like Christmas in November. All I know is I really hope he is a good player. You can never very enough good players.
