Looks like Buford may start at RT

I was wondering where he's been. Talked about all fall preseason as a likely starter and then we get Wohlabaugh, Flax, et al but no Buford. I know the coaches know better than me but it was curious that he very quickly dropped on the depth chart. I'd love to have him shine on Saturday.

We need a really good night for the OL especially if Will is banged up and playing or, God forbid, the backup QB is the one taking snaps. A really clean pocket and running lanes are a backup QB's best friends.

couldn’t crack the 2 deep and now he’s starting. This could be very bad.

EDIT: guess he was the 2 at guard, but this definitely reeks of “throw it against the wall and see if it sticks”

It probably won’t be good but it can’t be any worse than if Wohlabaugh was in there.
Yeah...I agree here. Wohlbaugh is just slow as molasses and his feet look like cement blocks are his shoes. Maybe the game is to fast for him and that will come in time.

But Buford is not a slow kid maybe he's jsut a bit too short and not as strong for a tackle vs. those bull rushing edge rushers. I thought Buford looked solid in spring game at one tackle spot...and then bam the August practices he loses it to Wohlbaugh and even Horsey moves to tackle to replace him. But maybe the kid can emerge and get into the rotation when Flax is back.

I'd wondered if maybe Buford opened fall practice with an injury. Much talk about him in spring, then nothing.

I heard that Buford was having trouble picking up on the blocking schemes the new coordinator and line coach brought in. Hopefully he is better with it now. Heck, I can’t believe we aren’t trying anyone with a pulse now to help with our porous line.

The kid that has me puzzled is John Young. He was a 4 Star that is HUGE and can move but hasn’t even been mentioned to help. Why?

Doghouse maybe? Who knows?

I think this is the biggest problem for the entire OL. They look confused and totally lost on blocking schemes in the new offense.

Coen had to abandon the wide zone read plays last year about this time. Simplified the run game and helped improve pass pro.

I am not sure trying to run a complicated NFL offense with college kids is a great idea. It is one thing for a pro level talented Lineman to learn AND have the physical ability to play this offense, but we have ZERO NFL linemen on this team right now.

Things could change with the young ones but I think this is right. One reason the OL has been so steady the last 6 years: Jon Toth, George AA, Logan Stenberg, Landon Young, Drake Jackson, Darrian Kinnard, Luke Fortner, and I feel like I'm forgetting 1 or 2.

...Nick Haynes was a very good SEC player who wasn't good enough for the NFL (diabetes diagnosis didn't help), but my kingdom for him playing any of the three interior OL positions right now.

I get what you guys are saying regarding NFL caliber OL. But UK doesn't play in the NFL, they just need to be good enough to win big time college football games. Right now have been doing that. We should have won in Oxford.

I've wondered the same thing, mrschwump.

As to not being able to pick up the scheme, weren't we playing the same scheme in spring and fall practice this year? Went from likely starter to 'whatever happened to that guy?' pretty quick. Certainly the rankings and size of DB would suggest he's ready. If it's been a physical thing, maybe he's past that now. If it was a mental/aptitude thing, why was he starting in spring and fall? Just very curious.

I'm guessing he'll be at least adequate and, with a little help here and there, may do well. Who knows at this point? The OL has been a crapshoot from series to series thus far this season.

We don't know that. Goodwin is a true freshman. The staff isnt going to play him till he is comfortable and is progressing with every snap.
That may be the case, I’ve have seen wolabaugh play and he has gotten beat a lot. Goodwin was a top recruit so he has talent

Big time talent that protects the Franchise QBs blindside.

I’m gonna side with the coaches here and trust they know if he can help or not right now!

True, but keep in mind the staff kept Bunchy at center for several games before moving him to Guard and inserting RFr Jackson. Then they both become AAs at their positions.

He’s a 5 star True Freshman. They are different than regular Freshman.

They have higher projections. Some are actually ready to play day 1, but not all. OL is the toughest position to project. He's also playing the most important spot on the OL at LT. The nuances of LT vs RT is tough, particularly for a kid whose scouting report deemed raw.
