Our offense was good under coen. His only issue was pace. Way too much going on presnap and lowered our snap count way too much. Elite at critical play design.

His return was marred by historic level drops and overall poor wr play with wrong routes or wrong depths.

One thing I'm curious about coen: hes constantly burning bridges moving up. As another poster said, if successful he will leave for a bigger market. However....once he gets that...what then? What happens when he runs out of jobs to chase?

He’s a hopper but I also think if you look at his moves there are understandable reasons on each one. He leaves UK the first time to be a pro OC with the rams. A spot that has led to nfl head coach more than once. Stoops throws even more money at him and he decides he also would be better off continuing to call plays for his career…which doesn’t happen in LA since Mcvay calls em. He does promise stoops multiple seasons but then stoops himself tries to leave and he gets offered a pro OC job with a qb he’s already worked with and knows can work with the system. He also kind of sees UK isn’t quite being run the same way as it had been.

Guy is an nfl head coach and that’s an extremely rare opportunity. Hard to fault him leaving TB for that once the gm issue was cleared up. Apparently some of jax fans are saying things like ‘even if he comes here and sucks at least he helped get rid Baalke’

This year we're in the bottom half because we couldn't move the ball. Coen moved the ball fine and we were well towards the top of the nation in offensive efficiency.

Fans need to just get over snap counts and offensive stats. That high speed pace is no longer what wins as shown these last two years. Efficiency and moving chains while playing defense is what wins.

Tempo used to win but, like the full court press in basketball, teams adjusted. Everyone started using it so the novelty wore off. Even chip Kelly, the father of it, doesn't rely on it.

Yeah that’s what I read and I read that getting rid of him was what made Coen change his mind (that and the money).

I liked him in Tampa as I’m a fan of Baker Mayfield. Trevor Lawrence is a good guy and he hasn’t been able to catch a break being in that shit organization. Hopefully he can turn it around.

Baker's entire bounce back started midyear of the season before. He was literally unemployed. No one wanted him. Out of desperation, the rams signed him mid season after a run on qb injuries.

Immediately he and coen clicked. Baker looked like a different qb even his first game then kept getting better. He rode that wave to the free agent deal with tampa where he continued to improve. He went to another level this season.

Whatever coen did with him in that short time really clicked. Without that, hes probably back to unemployed or at best a backup.

Either way at some point hes going to get as high as he can go. Especially with a history of depression and anxiety, peaking will have an impact. High achievers and ambitious people sometimes don't handle it well.

In the NFL you have to strike when the iron is hot. The Bucs have a couple of key injuries next year or a key guy or two doesn't come back, that door will close on Coen. He has probably a three year window to show can be a successful CEO or he will be back to OC for most, if the not the rest of his career.

I agree with this. He has moved on from job to job, but he's put himself in position of being a freaking head coach in the NFL. So, it's worked well for him.

You never know what the future holds and when opportunities come. If the Bucs all of a sudden go 6-11 next year, that opportunity to be a head coach might no longer exist.

I'm a motivated guy. I moved from DC>Philly>Oregon>Baltimore>Illinois as I've climbed in my career. A couple of those moves were because I always kept my eye open to opportunities that put me in a better position for my next move. Always one step ahead in thinking. Liam is the same way...always thinking of ways to better his resume and put himself in position for what could be next.

I have no issues with what he does.

I do cut Stoops some slack because of his sudden departure. Tough to compete in the SEC changing OC every year. The advantage of having the continuity of Stoops' defense, Marrow's recruiting, has been offset by the lack of stability on offense.

You have to give some of that credit to Dave Canales (Carolina Panthers head coach), and to Baker himself. Baker was smart enough to learn the playbook on very short notice while with the Rams.

Coen helped Mayfield improve his efficiency though with greater usage of the tight end and running back in short passing. Some of that was a necessity because of all the receiver injuries the team had during the year.

Getting him the first time was a major coup. I do think he would've stayed for a second year had the dominoes not fallen opening up that rams job.

That said, we absolutely should've never rehired him. We had to know for a fact he was one and done and that doesn't help. Turned out he was like half and done because he was looking for a job most of the season.

True...Baker had a very solid 2023 under Dave Canales....but he improved a good bit in 2024....Baker was probably top 6 QB in NFL last year.

2023....4000 yards 64% completion 28 TD 10 Ints
2024....4500 yards 71% completion 41 TD and 16 ints (granted one more game to schedule)

Baker balled out with essentially the same supporting cast.

As much as I don't want to admit..>Stoops found a true talent in Coen and helped UK. Just stunk he could not keep him longer and the reality of NFL guys just don't stick in college for continuity. But Coen was easily miles better than Brown, Dawson, Gran, Scangerello and Bush. He is truly an elite offensive mind.

Yep, that's what I heard living here near Jacksonville. Plus, when the Bucs tried to reach him, he ghosted them and wouldn't reply. Gotta question his integrity at this point with reneging on his 2-year commitment to UK and now running around behind the Bucs back. Why not just tell the Bucs that you changed your mind and would like to consider the Jags? Instead you lie to your employer and ghost them. No one faults him for looking at a HC job. The way he did it is a horrible look and, if I'm a GM, I would have serious reservations about hiring someone who's shown questionable ethics.

Also, I think I'd rather coach Baker right now, than attempt to make Trevor Lawrence enjoy football. Because that's a real problem. If you don't love the game, you can't really fix that. Things will be much harder in Jax than in Tampa.

Thats a pretty good summation. I was down on Coen too for a while the way he up and left again, but when I thought about Stoops trying to get out himself I immediately gave Coen a pass. Ship is sinking and the captain is trying to get out?? That can change a mans heart and plans pretty quick.

I don't disagree but he can't worry about what people think about it. He couldn't turn down having some say in the GM he will be working with, that's huge for him and his first HCing opportunity.

Gotta admit, thats not the best look for the guy. I get the "its a business and everybody is going to try and get theirs while they can" stuff but he's giving off a whole lotta ME vibe to me.

I mean the Bucs went far and beyond to show the buy how much they appreciated and and wanted to keep him and even offered to make him the highest paid assistant IN HISTORY and his comeback is . . . "is that all you got?". Then pulls all this caniving crap with the visit?

I'm good with Coen taking some credit, but this is inaccurate regarding the release and waiver claim of Mayfield.
