Lexington restaurant memories: long gone favorite places to eat.

I can't remember if they had one in Lex but when I played for the Man-O-War baseball club (16-18 yo) the coach would always TREAT us to dinner at Duff's smorgasbord after a road game. It was similar to the Blue Boar. We complained but we shoveled that stuff down though.

And didn't the Blue Boar have fish tanks lined up along the wall where you stood in line? I may be thinking of some other place. Aah, dinner at the Blue Boar then cruise through Thornberry's toys and the Grants department store...

And don't forget the elephant. LOL

VH - Remember when Thornberry's would send you a card, with a key in it for your birthday, and you'd take the key up there and they'd get a present out of the Treasure Chest and give it to you?

I bought my first skateboard (with money I'd saved from my paper route), a Hobie Hustler at Thornberry's.

I was skateboarding on that Hobie, in Jeff Gibson's empty pool over in Stonewall, and I caught hanger on the edge, and my upper teeth braces were driven THROUGH my upper lip. My Dad had to use needle nose pliers to free it. And then, he poured every kid's worst nightmare, Merthiolate on my mouth. I had a pink goatee for 2 weeks. 🤣 🤣 🤣

There was an arcade across the street from Godfather's too. Of course, nothing beat Tony's arcade in Crossroads Shopping Center.

Dive Bar: The Rebel Room at Southland Bowling Lanes. It was pure class in there. LOL
I chipped my front tooth at Southland Bowling. Another memory of that place was the evening of April 3, 1974. After baseball practice at Southland Park, it was off to Southland for my mom's bowling league. I remember my dad coming to get us because of the storm. I ate plenty greasy food there.

Did we go to school with him? That name is familiar to me.

He went to Stonewall Elementary, but he was at JCM with us.

My Mom bowled in a league at Southland Lanes too. As did I, when I was a kid. And the food was great there.

My Dad was helping pump water out of our church (Southern Hills) that night. I remember my sister crying in the basement (she and I, and my Mom) were hunkered down there, and she went ballistic because I was laughing at her. She thought we were going to die. I'm like, were in a basement, in a Bedford stone ranch, it would take a Cat 5 Hurricane to take that thing out. LOL
They probably bowled in the same league(s)

Yeah, I remember my dad sitting in his truck listening to the radio getting reports on the storm.

I can't remember the closest a tornado got to our neighborhood, but I'm thinking there was one out by the airport, which isn't far. I wanted to go outside and look for them, but my Mom stopped that in it's tracks.

Speaking of bad weather, I had that paper route during those two brutal winters, and the year we got all that snow, it was almost up to my waist, when I was delivering papers. LOL

Did we have to go to school on Saturday's that one year. People said we did, but I don't remember that.

Damn, what a great thread. I bet HK and I have interacted sometime back in the past (outside of our one-time shared employer)

Ryan’s and Fire Mountain buffets.
Someone said it, but Parkette is sorely missed by yours truly.
My Friend's and Co. era, which I refer to as "the dark times" I was recently divorced, and living in Creekside Apartments, RIGHT NEXT TO IT. LOL I could have thrown a nickel from my balcony and hit the front door.
That was THE place where my in-laws would go every Friday night. When we started dating, I was there a lot. We/I didn’t drink at the time, and they did, so it was a good hour of sitting there while they had a couple cocktails. I mostly remembered being hungry.
The Blue Boar (in Turfland Mall) LOL
Wife and I ran the Santa Claus stand at Turfland one year. Our ‘office’ space was the emptied out Blue Boar. It smelled exactly the same, even after being closed for 5+ years.
Red, Hot and Blue in Chevy Chase area. Had some solid BBQ.
My first BBQ. They had good wings, too.

Yes. I think it was only one Sat...maybe 2 but the parents put a quick end to that nonsense. Snow and ice was on the ground for a month.

I’m just posting to keep the clown guys thread moving. I can see he wants that.

I thought the Arby’s on New Circle was a must but they moved it.

I went to Stonewall and JCM as well. We used to skip class at Lafayette and go to the Southland Bowling Alley.

Haha yeah I almost forgot about that place. Right next to the Mr. Gatti's with the Pizza Buffet and movie projector style big screen TV. That is where the sports teams i played on as a kid would go for the post game celebration.

Another Pizza Flashback was Godfathers on Southlnd Drive. I can't imagine how many quarters I spent there on Donkey Kong or whatever video games they had there at the time
That godfathers was packed on Friday nights with families.

Western Sizzlin was our Sunday spot. We had a large family and kids under 12 ate for either free or a dollar. Something like that.

A couple I can remember from my UK days (78-82):

The Lost Armadillo- I don't think it lasted long but every Friday they had chili and claimed it had 100 ingredients. Now if it was ever proven I don't know.

A Mexican restaurant, similar to Chi Chi's, I can't remember the name but it was wildly popular with the college crowd. They had a guy named Dr. Popper dressed in a lab coat going around the tables and making tequila poppers. They also had margaritas the size of bird baths. It could have been a chain restaurant. Memory of the place is a little foggy as expected.

A la Lucie
Alfafas
Peppercorn Duck Club
Mr Gattis
High on Rose
I miss their Hoppin' John.

Blue Boar I believe in the Turfland Mall. I did not grow up in Lexington (about 90 minutes away) but we would go occasionally and I can remember that cafeteria type place in the mall, had to google the name. They had blue jello.

My sister who is 10 years older than I, lived in Lex for a while and I would go stay with her as a kid. Remember going to max and Erma’s and getting the fried cheese on a stick and ice cream

There was a really good Mexican restaurant on Harrodsburg Road just off New Circle by the Fairfield and Hampton Inn. BRU Burger is there now. I can't remember the name of it but we loved eating there when we lived in Lexington.

That's right. They had a bar in there called Balloons IIRC.

Anyone remember Danver's on Wilhoit Dr? Also, The Bombay Bicycle Club

There used to be a LaRosa's pizza in Lexington also. In Woodhill Shopping Center (and one on Euclid IIRC)
I remember seeing Danvers. It was in the shadow of that ridiculous water slide .

I seem to recall a Lotts Sandwich Shop on Nicholasville Rd (I think). I was fairly young, but whenever I went to a UK football game with one of my older brothers, we'd sometimes stop there. They had a turkey sandwich which was a seasonal item & as a hick from the sticks, I thought it was a slice of heaven.

LOL - Well, I'm 61 years old, so it's been spaced out over a LONG period of time.

Some great memories in this topic. I'm a little older, so some of my brain functions are sporadic, but am I correct about a Lotts Sandwich Shop on Nicholasville Rd? Whatever it was, I think it was on the right as you headed towards UK's stadium from the south.

I believe I remember the sign (I was a little guy).

How about Tommy's Ice Cream stand next to Duffers Droving range
