KY High School Football Playoffs

What looks like it would’ve been Boyle County’s game winning TD, they called it a fumble in the end zone and touchback. I slowed that video above and it looks like a bad call.

Edit: I saw a different slowed down angle on Facebook and his knee was down. They got screwed.

Boyle couldn’t stop Cov Cath’s rushing attack so even if Boyle scores no guarantees they don’t lose anyway.

I had no expectation that Ashland could beat Boyle Co but I figured both teams would coast into the semifinals. Both had been crushing everyone they played, except for Ashland losing to a big Columbus Ohio team. Then I believed Boyle would easily win the title against whoever they played in the final. Wrong on all three counts 😳

As a PTHS grad (class of 68), I'll be rooting for them. Wasn't sure they could beat Boyle but think they can win it all now.

Only time I pay attention to HS football is the end of the playoffs, and when a local school is in it (from Lex). Got four still alive this year, but Trinity and Beechwood win their divisions nearly every year, so can't see Douglass or LCA winning. Sayre in Class A may have the best chance but possibly Lex Cath can win in 3A.

1A Semis

(9-4) Raceland @ (10-2) Kentucky Country Day

(11-2) Campbellsville @ (13-0) Sayre

2A Semis

(9-4) Somerset @ (13-0) Owensboro Catholic

(11-2) LCA @ (12-1) Beechwood

3A Semis

(7-6) Lexington Catholic @ (10-3) Christian Academy of Louisville
* crazy stat for this game is that Lex Cath started the season 0-6

(11-2) Belfry @ (11-2) Union County

4A Semis

(11-2) Covington Catholic @ (12-0) Franklin County

(12-1) Corbin @ (13-0) Paducah Tilghman

5A Semis

(11-2) Highlands @ (13-0) Cooper

(11-2) Bowling Green @ (12-1) South Warren

6A Semis

(10-3) Great Crossing @ (11-2) Ryle

(9-4) Frederick Douglass @ (11-2) Trinity

Check out the drive Belfry has to make to get to Union County. Belfry is deep in the far Eastern Kentucky mountains and Union County is the largest corn producing county located far west. It’s at least a 7 hour drives. Those mountain boys are going to feel like they are on a different planet. Should be a helluva game though. Both teams are 11-2 and peaking. Belfry is a perennial power and UNion County has been getting better every year behind up and coming Coach Derek Johns. They just got finished dominating Hart County who was undefeated.

Belfry is a really good football team. Weak district to play in but they schedule above their class (3A) in order to get experience with playoff\championship Calibur teams from 4A & 5A. They also play Class 1A perennial power Pikeville every season and is a cross-county rival.

They are run heavy but they can also air it out. The thing is about Belfry is that you know what they are going to do and the style they play, but stopping it is difficult. They are hard nose, blue collar run it down your throat offense. The run defense is pretty stout, the pass defense is a little bend but not break.

If you give Belfry a lead, they love nothing more than to play small ball and grind the game out eating up 4-5 yards per down and making the clock an enemy of opposing teams.

IMO, Belfry will have to play a near perfect game this Friday at Union County. They are practicing on Thanksgiving morning then loading the busses and heading down right after, so they are not travelling on Friday.

Can getting beat 47-7 really be called an upset?
Yeah, game was at Mayfield because Mayfield had higher RPI, so they had home field advantage. I don’t know what the line would have been, but I’m guessing they were favored based on that and their record at home in playoffs.

Was there a problem with the Mayfield fans acting up?

Yep, that one was huge too!
Those two games were not comparable. LCA got screwed for the 2nd year in a row and had to go there and play. It was the #1 ranked team having to travel to play a team ranked 5-6. Mayfield has a rich history but def had a down year from the past. Can hardly call it an upset. While Cov Cath went to play the 4 time defending state champs ranked 12th in the nation and pulled the shocker. Last year Boyle beat them 40-0!

Khsaa has computer rankings on their website. They had LCA #1 yet for the 2nd str8 year sent them to Mayfield. No way mayfield was the favorite

I'm just on the west side of Owensboro and may go down to watch this one. My health hasn't been great in the last 6-8 months, but I'm feeling better and have to respect a team that is traveling nearly 400 miles to play in a state high school playoff game.

I’m a Union County native (class of 1983) and I’m pretty stoked about how the Braves are doing. I’m going to the UK BB game on Friday night and the FB game on Saturday, but I wish I could be there to watch the UCHS-Belfry matchup.

I knew Belfry was in EKY but didn’t realize just how far east until I googled it to find out.

I believe this is the third time Union County has made it to the semifinals in school history; pretty sure they’ve never been in the finals.
