KY High School Football Playoffs

Boone Co HS never won a title? Thought they won at least once, maybe with Shawn Alexander?
Nope. Owen Hauck barely knew what a pass was. Three in a game was a lot. He was a fine gentleman though. Lost once in the finals. I did sideline stats for BC in the Alexander days. Loved it. He wasn't 17 yet when his senior season ended. It's no wonder AL RSed him.

To note, Shawn's nephew Austin stars for Cooper & is a North Carolina commit.

Only time I pay attention to HS football is the end of the playoffs, and when a local school is in it (from Lex). Got four still alive this year, but Trinity and Beechwood win their divisions nearly every year, so can't see Douglass or LCA winning. Sayre in Class A may have the best chance but possibly Lex Cath can win in 3A.

Results about what I figured last night.

As a PTHS grad (class of 68), I'll be rooting for them. Wasn't sure they could beat Boyle but think they can win it all now.
This PTHS team could beat the Tornado teams of the 1960's by 100 points. I don't believe that anyone from those teams could start on the team today. The biggest player back then was about 6'0" and 190 pounds. Now, the starting linemen are all over 250 pounds. Tilghman largest lineman is about 6'7" and 300 pound, and being recruited by all the big time schools. I can't believe how big kids are today. By the way, the Tilghman quarterback, who holds the all time passing record in Kentucky, is the grandson of a 1968 graduate of PTHS.

The best Paducah Tilghman team ever was the 1973 squad.

This team is better. The 1973 team was the best up to that time, having more size in the line than any previous team, but the talent on this team is unreal. Martels Carter, Jr. and Vanzale Hinton have signed with SEC schools. Jarvis Strickland, junior offensive tackle, is considered the top college prospect in Kentucky in both the junior and senior classes, and is being recruited nationally. Freshman Avery Thompson, QB-WR-DB, was offered by UK in the summer prior to his 8th grade year, something unheard of.

Yes I know. The James brothers grew up just down the street from me.

L
Tilghman, Owensboro Catholic, and my hometown Union County Braves repping Western Ky in the championship games!!
Bowling Green ? I get it, they are more South Central Ky, but from the western half of the state.

Fun fact, this will be the 3rd time BG has faced Cooper in the state championship game, BG is 2-0. Should be a really good one. IF the BG defense can get some stops, they have a chance. But I think Cooper finally gets revenge. Down year for BG, but still beat St. X and are back in the big game, same as last year, down year, but won it all.
Bowling Green will need huge games from SR. Deuce Bailey, Jr. Trevy Barber and Jr. Jaxen Smith.

Bailey (SR.) - 185 / 279 (66%) / 2978 yards passing / 45 TD's / 8 ints. A lot of games BG was up big so they didn't pass the ball much in the second half of games.

Barber (JR.) - 67 reception / 1189 yards / 22 TD's
Smith (JR.) - 44 receptions / 667 yards / 11 TDs

Not much of a running game.
Jaxen Smith - 56 rushes / 390 yards / 5 TDs
Nick Graham - 67 rushes / 355 yards / 5 TDs
Deuce Bailey - 50 rushes / 338 yards / 2 TDs

Since Kentucky absolutely sucks ass and I refuse to watch stoops a day longer, here is the finals matchups…

1A Raceland vs Sayre
2A Ocath vs Beechwood
3A Union County vs CAL
4A Franklin County vs Paducah Tilghman
5A Cooper vs Bowling Green
6A Ryle vs Trinity

1A/2A/4A will be played Friday in that order starting ar noon

3A/6A/5A will be played in that order Saturday starting at noon

Trinity will do Trinity things. 29th championship.
You’re a Louisville guy; what can you tell us about the Christian Academy of Louisville that will play my Union County Braves this coming Saturday? From what little I can see, it appears CAL has built a football pipeline of its own; though perhaps not on the scale of Trinity has done.

They are devoted to being a Trunity. They have a pipeline of great UofL QB coaching and a pretty big Christian school system pipeline with the numbers to compete. The Hodge kid is playing QB this year after previously being his brother's primary receiver for 3 years. He is their best athlete.

I’d like to see how many of their players are on scholarship because I can’t imagine a lot of parents can afford that.
I looked at one of them that had an average scholarship of $13,000. It's still hard to think how people come up with the other $15,000 or so to go to those schools. That's why I was against the constitutional amendment to give them public funds. Even with the $4,000 in seek money, most people still couldn't come up with the difference to send their kids there. It would of just turned into a $4,000 handout to rich people at the expense of taxpayers.

Sayre alum, congrats Spartans!

And it wasn’t anywhere close to $28k when I went there

Those Union County boys had a rough first half, but they fought back and competed hard. Score was 35-21 with under 2 minutes left. Coach Derek Johns put his reserves in. They were out of timeouts. All CAL had to do was kneel and the game was over. Well, Hunter Cantwell wanted to throw salt in the wound and ran it up. I thought that was a classless gesture by an otherwise well played game.

Trinity with 29 titles is something special.

Ryle gave them a good game but ran out of gas.

Both teams have young players in the lineups.

As a Trunity alumni I am always mystified by some of the comments about "scholarships" at the private schools. The Public schools give everyone 100% scholarships to every kid. You have to PAY and really want to go to Trinity to pay thousands. The Pubs have the advantage IMO.

You’re in another planet with that worldview

Trinity and St X have won what…28 of the last 30 Ky high school titles over last 30 years in 6A…and you don’t think they have a decisive advantage over every public school?

You definitely can argue that. The flip side is one has to choose from the kids who live within that district when the other one can compile some of the best from everywhere.

The football playoffs are incredibly boring in this state. It’s the same schools pretty much every year. It’s blowout after blowout for the first two rounds. Trinity shouldn’t even bother playing anyone in the state other than St. X and just be penciled into the finals every year.

Those are mostly Trinity under Beatty. X hasn't really been relevant since the 70s.

Back to my point. Trinity gives tuition assistance that anyone can "blindly" apply for. I believe it maxes out at 50%. A public school offers free tuition to all. In fact, I pay the tuition for athletes at public (G-Schools.) Parents want their kids to get a good education without being groomed. So unfortunately there is a price for that. To the degree they field excellent athletic teams...they work harder.

That is why T plays a regional schedule. I believe the 6A should be an "open" category that allows say Boyle Cty or any of the 4 or 5A schools who think they are up to the competition to compete. There are 6As that are awful. The ADs can figure who should play in the "Open."

Check out the drive Belfry has to make to get to Union County. Belfry is deep in the far Eastern Kentucky mountains and Union County is the largest corn producing county located far west. It’s at least a 7 hour drives. Those mountain boys are going to feel like they are on a different planet. Should be a helluva game though. Both teams are 11-2 and peaking. Belfry is a perennial power and UNion County has been getting better every year behind up and coming Coach Derek Johns. They just got finished dominating Hart County who was undefeated.

Belfry and Harlan are definitely two of the most geographically isolated schools in the state.
