Kobe on his last leg

I hate to see icons and legends of the game go out limping and not with much of a bang...

Not a Kobe lover or hater...not a lakers lover or hater...I respect what they have done together over the years...

However, I can't help but think that they both went about his last years all wrong...

Lakers and Kobe should have gotten together about 4-5 years ago and really plan out how the final stretch was going to go from pay and roster, to minutes on the court and how many games to sit each year...

1) they needed to surround him with talent...
2) He needed to play nice, and allow them to surround him with talent and not chase people off...
3) both parties needed to understand that his minutes needed to be managed...like the Spurs...

They totally butt-fumbled everything...

Dwight was an epic fail because Kobe doesn't like to share and can't accept that not everyone is a stone cold killer like he is...Dwight isn't trying to step on throats...but he's a hell of a talent that could have helped, and been a nice piece for the lakers to build around post Kobe...

He had another shot to allow some things to be done the last contract go around...he could have allowed for a lot more room to attract people...

He could have been more outgoing/welcoming to prospective free agents like Lebron, Carmelo, and Bosh...maybe he could have spoken up and got something done to get Rondo...

Man, it's almost frustrating to see how a franchise full of folks making the big bucks just absolutely poop on some golden opportunities...

Call me a Rockets homer.. but he has no business being in the starter for the West over Harden... A player who is making a strong push for MVP this year.

Total BS.

Yep, that is BS for sure! And this coming from someone who despises the way Harden plays the game.

Father time catches up to everyone. Kobe has matured a lot imo and he seems to be a pretty likeable guy now. Of course that's me observing from afar so who really knows what the man is really like?

Torn rotator cuff now. .
Kobe is making tens of millions to never play again.
Lakers are a joke.

All-star games are for the fans & if they want Kobe over Har-en, then that's the way it should be.

If Har-en ends up starting, will they have someone to play defense on his man for him?

So sad when someone is a year behind the point he's trying to argue. Harden has been anything but a defensive liability this year. He's a reason why until a week ago (after playing GSW twice), they were top3 in the nation in opponents PPG. You shouldn't use talking points if you're not even keeping up with the topic.

As for the fans wanting players, being an All-Star is an achievement and an accolade, the game is a FAR second. So make two lists. "All-Stars" (who earned it through their play) and they get to watch the "Fan Favorites" play the actual game. Not a bad idea.. I'd hate to see players that mean something in the present landscape of basketball get injured in a meaningless game.

Nothing against Kobe, by the way. He has earned many All-star games, all of them. But not this one...

As a lifelong lakers fan, please retire kobe. Please. As long as the lakers lose enough to get a top 5 pick and retain it. Otherwise it goes to the suns b/c of the dumb azz trade they made for decrepit azz steve nash.

You can thank china for that (and this comment is not intended to be sarcastic)

Maybe if Kobe is done, LA can actually build a contender again. It's painfully obvious that no free agents of any merit want to play with Kobe, and I don't blame them.

I think the NBA will "make sure" both NY and LA get a top 5 pick. Yes, I do think there is some shady stuff that goes on there.

I like the Lakers as well, and they need to build around Randle, the new top pick, and get a couple bigtime free agents. Love has not impressed me much this year in Cleveland, but I suppose that is option A.

He's not gonna retire because of that ridiculous contract Kupchak gave him.

It was a good run, Kobe. Keep rehabbing to collect that paycheck, but please don't embarrass yourself by playing in any more games. Sorry, but you're a notch or two below Jordan, and always will be. You can't feel bad, you're still a top 10 all time player, but you aren't Jordan, you never were Jordan, and you never will be Jordan.

He better take up a non contact sport to get all that competitiveness out... maybe chess? I'd like to see him flash the Kobe underbite at Gary Kasparov.

They had a plan. The plan was to bring in Chris Paul and Dwight. They traded for Chris Paul and David Stern killed it. Dwight didn't work, but would he have worked if he were playing with Paul? I think so.

They have definitely fumbled things since then, but they had a good plan for sure.

You mean you still haven't figured out that the NBA All Star starter vote is not actually about who's best?

Instead, it's essentially just a measure of fan popularity, and often skewed by ballot box stuffing. Loooong history of many undeserving players being selected as starters (hell I remember that stretch when Yao Ming would get more votes than any player in the league each year simply because of the Chinese vote). This is nothing new, happens with someone nearly ever year.

Ha, I'm not going to deny that this is how another Rocket's great, Yao Ming, got into some of his later All-star games...

That China vote...

Yep, this. David Stern was still butthurt that his attempt to cheat the league vis-à-vis the draft lottery in 1986 never panned out for New York. He hates the Lakers.

For all the crooked things David Stern has done, killing that trade ranks right near the top.

In the original deal, New Orleans would have netted the following for Paul: Goran Dragic, Lamar Odom, Luis Scola, Kevin Martin.

In the Clipper deal that was ultimately done, New Orleans got this: Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman, Al-Farouq Aminu, and a draft pick that became Austin Rivers.

Which was the better deal for New Orleans?

Not to mention, the Lakers were also sending Pau Gasol away to Houston in that trade. So from the Lakers standpoint, they were giving up 2 All-Star bigs in exchange for one SuperStar PG, with the belief that they could go out and nab another All-Star big to play with him.

And it would have worked, too, if it weren't for that pesky David Stern...

Agreed.

Fans are stupid. They should have no say in who plays in the game because as long as fans are voting, it's gonna be a popularity contest. Harden should be the 2 guard starter in the West.
I couldnt agree more. I remember when Yao Ming who didnt play in like 2 season was named a starter!!
