I watch these experts try and break down how you beat UK and I think they have it backwards...
Every single one goes to offense 1st...gotta make 3's etc...I think it's the reverse...IMO here is how you beat us:
1) Gotta be able to DEFEND! That's the #1 thing. You aren't gonna be able to play us and try to outscore us and play no defense. It's not gonna work. To me you gotta mix it up...Play man some, go to match up zone, press some, halfcourt trap some, maybe go 1-3-1 you gotta make our guards think, and confuse them. Say it takes 7 or 8 seconds for us to get it over half court, if you can make our guards decifer a defense, and slowly get our offense set you can putus into a position to have around 15 seconds to run our offense which can force us into bad shots. No matter how good your offense is, we are gonna put together one of those 6-8 minute stretches where you can't score. A team has to be able to in turn get stops and not let a 6pt lead turn into 16....
2) If you can force those bad shots you GOT TO REBOUND and look for chances to beat us down the floor for some easy baskets But not turn it into a track meet.
3) offensively, you need to have a good night from 3. I'm talking making close to 10+. I think you gotta try and get to the line as much as possible and convert free throws and get some easy put backs on the offensive glass.
4) Luck aspect....we gotta have a horrible defensive and horrible offensive night
5) gotta have some athleticism.
To me these teams contain those elements:
Gonzaga- they have the offense but not the defense. Also, in their 1 game against elite competition (arizona) they shot 37% from the field and 22% from 3. If they struggled that much with Zona, UK is a whole new level. Very little athleticism.
Duke- potent offense, garbage defense. They have some very athletic guys though. To me though they couldn't get away with their 4 guard lineup. They would have to go with Jefferson, and he gives up a ton of size to Willie as does Winslow to Lyles.
Zona- they have the defense, but are prone to long scoring droughts. They had a 9:42 second scoring drought against OSU where they didn't have a fg. They have the athleticism and the defense, but depth is a big issue, especially with their bigs.
Wisconsin - have adequate offense. Have a sufficient defense But they really stuggle with athleticism. Oregon's athleticism gave them fits. If Oregon had a defense, they would've beat them. The other 3 teams they have played with athleticism are Georgetown which they won by 1, Duke which they lost, and Maryland which they lost.
Ultimately, it's gonna take a ton, and we are gonna have to give whoever we are playing some help. That's why it's not gonna happen. too much has to go right for the opposing team and too much has to go bad for us. 40-0 is coming...
