Golden state is 16 and 0 to start the season and their head coach steve kerr has been off work the entire season so far.

I have always thought, especially for the nba, and to some extent college and hs...coaching is over rated. Lets stay with nba here though and i acknowledge gsw is exceptional in players with high iq and hogh character so after that all you need is someone adept at calling timeouts and bot getting in the way teying to be the next steve kerr.

I disagree with this entirely. Floor coaching in the NBA is overrated, yes, but Kerr helped put together that team, put together a very good coaching staff, brought in a new culture with him, directed the practices (and even with him out, he still directs the practices), and so on.
For every argument that coaching doesn't matter, there are 10 more arguments that say it does matter.

Golden State proves a lot of things:

1. That being Healthy is a huge factor in winning games.

2. That there is growing trend towards small ball, so much so that teams are trying to copy what GSW is doing.

If they start losing when he comes back will they fire him?:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Foolish. Kerr implemented the system that got GS over the top. He trained Luke Walton in that system. Though not on the bench, Kerr is still in the middle of everything.

If anything, Luke Walton should get a ton of credit for handling things as smoothly as he has.

Kerr was smart enough to realize what he had when he took over and to let them play to their strengths.

People get very confused in professional sports and coaching. It's not coaching so much in professional sports as it is managing. It's why college coaches, no matter the sport, struggle to transition to the professional game. Trust me, you need a manager to call TO, and who to put on the floor.

Problems with your logic:
  1. The Warriors weren't nearly this good under Mark Jackson.
  2. It assumes that Luke Walton, son of Bill who played for Wooden, and has been around basketball his entire life, is a dummy who doesn't know how to coach.
  3. It makes assumptions that Kerr, an extremely intelligent man, would hire a dummy as the assistant head coach

Coaching is everything in college. Just look at UK. Compare Cal to Gillispie and Tubby.

You have to understand the difference here. First off, in high school and college, coaching is imperative..your teaching players constantly, do that's an absurd thought.

In the NBA, the coach implements the strategy and then the players execute. Afterall they are pros, you shldnt have to waste time teaching. They also dictate matchups, defensive focus, sub patterns, etc. I'm guessing you just watch the ball anyway so you don't get any if that.

The warriors are also blowing everyone out.

Truly elite coaches often earn their pay checks in close & late situations. Those are sure to arise in the post-season, when I fully suspect Kerr will be back.

Just because you're a pro doesn't mean you stop learning so I wouldn't say teaching ever stops.

Its easy to say that coaching is overrated in the NBA. Hell, I'm sure I've said it. But the idea that coaches in the NBA don't do anything make sense in thought but not in practice. If you're in charge of an NBA team and you have the opportunity to choose Gregg Pop or Luke Walton as the coach, who would you pick? What about if you got to choose between Steve Kerr and Pat Riley? Larry Brown or Erik Spolestra? Doc Rivers or one of the Van Gundys? You gotta know that who you pick matters and that some guys would do better than others.

So when Kerr was broadcasting NBA games on the side he was orchestrating the warriors draft picks and free agent signings? Interesting..

What does that have to do with the coaching job he's done? He took them from a middle of the pack playoff team to NBA champs. Few believed they had it in them. I didn't.

Do you think it really matters who sits on the end of sacramentos bench? Tondo or cousins are gonna do whatever they want regardless and if they get to much crap from the coach they will demand he be fired.

In nba you are a manager i agree with that, but in many not all that is all the coach is...a manager.

College is more recruiting than coaching....but much more teaching here than nba....

But with a team as polished as warriors there really isnt mych coaching going on at all. These dudes know how to play and they just go out and get it done. Same with spurs now....they gotbit pops...just stay out of the way.

Izzo even said "player coached teams are better than coach coached teams"....

Lmao. Kerr's success should show you how IMPORTANT good coaching is.

- Mark Jackson ran a outdated offense. Had a outdated view of the game on both sides of the ball. His GSW units never were top-10 in offensive efficiency during his time there.

  • Steve Kerr takes over the same cast & turns into the best offense & defense in the NBA.
  • He made small ball the new thing & has other teams using his concepts. Kerr and his staff were the first to throw out the terms " position less basketball". Now even our coach is using it.
  • What Walton is doing is simply using all of Kerr's concepts w/ this team during his absence.

Hell, our final four blunder last yr should show you how much good coaching matters. We're defending champs w/ a Kerr-like mind on the sidelines.

A huge difference is that Golden State was able to lose 5 playoff games and still come out on top.

Even Golden St. ran up against teams with good game plans. Suffered through nights where shooters ran cold.

UK had no margin for error. Cal took his best shot and it wasn't quite good enough.

Maybe a more free wheeling style would have worked better. Or maybe we would have lost to Notre Dame in a shootout. Can't really know.

I get it, different playoff styles, but with our team last yr, a Kerr-like mind rides us to the title w/ ease. Ease.

I can guarantee if NBA w/ a 1& out, that GSW team runs thru the tourney. Simply due to the focus needed in a do or die situation.

I don't think we need to look any farther than BCG at UK to see that coaching does matter.
Why go back that far? 2013 team was worst UK team since probation and had same coach that won it all the year before. Which would support the ops position. this is yet another subject that has good arguments on both sides and as always the truth lies in the middle.
