Kentucky v. Miss. State (Sunday)

I wanted to watch the festivities of the game today, but I'm probably going to turn it off. It makes me too mad on a nice day. Will likely just listen to Headrick.

Good God, what an epic failure today. Why not start Harper? Terrible decisions all the way around in a game we really need. Now need to take 2 out of 3 at Vandy to finish .500 in the SEC. Dumb dumb dumb

Trey Dawson with something positive as he bounces one off the score board. 9-1

I'm with ya ...got ribs on the grill and if the coaches do want it why should I care.

Followed up by Pompey striking out swinging and Cottam watching a breaking ball right down broadway. Becker then flies out.

I think we need to shake up the lineup again. Cottam struggling some in the 2 hole.

Offense looking awfully inept, really struggling with the barrage of breaking balls. 8 k's through four.

Disagree ..this game is on the idiotic pitching rotation today and as I mentioned earlier, it seems like Ming throws in the towel way too early and it rubs off on the players and they lose all concentration and give up themselves.

Throwing error by Squires scores another. MSU reaches double digits in the top of the fifth.

I'm not saying that because of this game. I'm saying it in general.

If anyone went and gets an extra commemorative ball, please let me know and we can talk about making a deal.

Well at least we found some offense. Inexcusable to give up 14 runs though.

Really disappointing performance by the Cats today.

Sure, Lewis and Haake were not available today, but your pitching staff as a whole can't give up 18 runs and your defense can't commit 5 errors (and that's being generous).

You finally get to 0.500 in the SEC only to get completely crushed today. You have a shot at hosting a regional if you can win some games to finish the season and you lay an egg.

Sad way to close out Cliff Hagan Stadium. Perhaps there's some poetic justice that Coach Henderson and MissSt athletic director John Cohen win that game in that manner.

LOL at our pitching. Not going very far with this staff. Got a good performance yesterday but game 1 and 3 were jokes. Luckily, we out scored them in game 1.

I'm guessing the staff felt like a lefty facing Miss. State was better since they struggled against Thompson and Hazelwood yesterday.

Problem is that Brad Schaenzer is as inconsistent as any pitcher on our staff and during SEC play he usually struggles. Harper needed to be the starter and they didn't put him in until after we were down 7-0. He then came in and only gave up one earned through 3 innings and would have likely been able to go much longer but for having extended innings thanks for multiple errors behind him.

Just another dumb mistake from the coaching staff regarding these pitchers. I bet that Harper could have gone at least 4 and we could have gotten at least 3 from Marshall. Today they only gave up the one earned. That would have gotten us to Mach with a chance to win. Just asinine.

By the way, why is it when this team seems to struggle with pitching it is an all hands on deck approach?

On Friday their starter struggled and he got bumped somewhat early and after giving up 7. Self then came in for almost 3 full and shut us down entirely. That rarely seems to happen with this team. Instead we put in someone else who promptly gives up even more runs and we end up losing by double digits. It's just unreal.

That's baseball. Futile to try to figure it out. [winking]

Think of this: My hapless Redlegs may have the worst team in the history of the franchise. They go out and destroy the Dodgers in LA, which NEVER happens with the best Cincinnati teams. There's no figuring out baseball.

Disappointing that UK played that poorly with an opportunity to sweep, creep above .500 in conference, and bolster their hosting resume. Pitching struggled from the get go, defense was absolutely awful by and large, and too many very bad at-bats. In any event, it's just one game and they have to move on mentally very quickly. Really need to win 3 this upcoming week.

To advance past a regional, sure seems like this squad would need to have its 3 best starters available and win three in a row. They just don't seem to have the pitching depth to come out of the losers bracket like last year. And for one reason or another, this team hasn't been able to string three together since most of the lineup was on fire down in Houston. If UK could get hot at the right time at the plate and somehow escape a regional in spite of the pitching issues, I think a super actually sets up a little better if their three starters are healthy.

There is one very peculiar item concerning Trey Dawson. He has hit 3 HR's this season, all coming in Big loses. 1st one against USC in a 15-1 loss, the 2nd @ UofL in an 8-2 loss, and the 3rd one today in that debacle. So, Trey no more HR's for you ! LOL

Will Lewis be a go next weekend ?

If Mingione made the call to start Schaenzer instead of Harper, it was a terrible decision. When he actually put it over the plate, it got hit hard. Harper did well but had two errors committed in the field behind him before he could do anything. Marshall did as well as I've ever seen him so you take him out after two scoreless innings and put in Maley to give up insurance runs. Either it is arrogance thinking that he can be daring against the odds and it will work out, or he thinks the team plays better down a few runs. I think it gave MSU confidence at the plate and that is hard to quench. McGeorge is not a good answer either unless you want to see how the team plays when down massively at home.

I enjoyed being at the game since I went with my son but it was a bad game to watch. I think you have to pitch to your strengths you had left by starting Harper, then coming in with someone else. Marshall was doing well and we had been hitting. Why not leave him in instead of bringing in Maley? It just seemed like the coaching decisions said this game doesn't matter at all and we aren't trying to win. The players then played like it didn't matter.

About the only things good were Braden Combs finally getting a hit (2 actually) and Marshall pitching well.

Game 1 wasn't a joke at all. Kid didn't have his stuff. Battled his ass off and won. Yesterday, the pitching was unbelievable. Today sucked. Let's just leave it at that.

I thought Harper did well and so did Marshall so it wasn't all doom and gloom. The ones that were doom (Schaenzer, Bringhurst), we already knew about. That's why I'd have to assume Mingione told the kids the game didn't mean anything or he wouldn't have started Schaenzer.

I don't think that was the case at all. Schaenzer had a solid outing at Tennessee and another one starting against Indiana. Yesterday, Thompson and Hazelwood did a great job and largely shut down Miss. State. I believe that Belanger and Ming saw this and felt like State struggled against left handed pitching. So, he threw Brad hoping to get a quality start and hoping that they'd struggle against another lefty. Unfortunately, Brad is just not on the same level as Thompson or Hazelwood and they ate his cookies.

I agree that it wasn't a good decision, but I can see the logic there. Now, why they left Mcgeorge in and especially for as long as they did is beyond me. I'm fine with them turning to McGeorge to shut down an inning which he has proven he can do, but Harper really should have basically been a second starter and should have kept warm throughout the early innings in preparation of coming in.
