Kentucky reportedly has a massive NIL budget for 2025 and 26 sea of blue

You don’t have to be snarky….I don’t agree with your version of events at all. I think Mahaney was viewed at the time as the superior player and UCONN did in fact outbid UK for him. Once he committed of the places Brea was looking at both UCONN and KU were full so we secured Brea as the last available elite option to him likely at a discounted price.
Mahaney was viewed as the superior player by who? Some random dudes that randomly threw together a ranking? Anyone who thought Mahaney was better than Brea was proven a fool. Luckily Pope was smarter than that.

We don’t have to win all the NIL recruiting battles but we can’t lose them all. Imo which I’ve said ad nauseam the past two days it’s absolutely critical that we win one NIL recruiting battle this cycle if we really want to be relevant at the highest level.

How many other players of Dent’s caliber are there or will there be in the portal? You’ll have a hard time convincing me there even are any others.

Sue me for saying this:

Come right down to it, I trust Pope more to finish out the rest of his roster and win even with only four million dollars left after breaking the bank on Dent than to compete at the highest levels without anyone of Dent’s caliber.

The portal is closing soon by most accounts. A lot of people here are saying it’s very early in the portal cycle but it’s actually quite late by most people’s reckoning.

Man I hate to be “snarky “ like the “untouchable “ guy called me but it’s frustrating when I try to drop hints or leak a little premium stuff and people want to argue and call me out on it . ( not talking about you) .

LOL Yosh, you have been here for a quarter of a century and Rafters still frustrates you? Even good deeds are not safe from the toxicness of some.

Dent isn’t THAT GOOD. Now someone like Yaxel Lendeborg ….yeah he’s THAT GOOD .

LOL , I know brother. This is a knew for me though. For 20+ years I was just a rafters guy and I always thought “why won’t some of those premium guys throw us a bone every now and then “ . So I finally bite the bullet and subscribe, and when I try to help my old gang out they throw it back at me . My mistake though, I should have known better. lol

In basketball you have uconn, kstate, sj, sac state, duke, Houston, and probably other im forgetting that will literally pay whatever it takes to get the players they want. Doesn't mean success, but we're talking about rosters.
What is Sac State? Sacramento State?

UConn had to scrounge together money to give Hurley a respectable contract that was still less than what UK reportedly offered. They have significantly more NIL money than we do now?

Bring us a Yaxel. I’m cool with that.

I still maintain that someone on Dent’s level is what we need at a minimum. You can say he wouldn’t make a difference compared to what we’ve signed already but I don’t think many people would agree with you.

Sorry if I came across as a Richard. I post at work, and sometimes lose tact while crafting a response. Lol

No I’m not saying he wouldn’t have made a difference. Just the gap between him and a few other point guards we’re still after is much narrower than a guy like Yaxel . If you’re going to spend half your budget on a dude , he has to be special.

I think something to keep in mind during this portal season is the faith or lack-there-of in our returning players. I believe moves made in the portal will be more building around what we currently have vs what we can afford. Maybe there's a great player out there that is asking for a large bag that technically we can afford but maybe we don't feel like its necessary to get that player because we have that skill-set covered by someone currently on the roster.

For instance; how much faith does the staff have in Colin Chandler? I think he is a tricky situation. He appears ready to take the next step; good shooter, above average athlete, great defender, good passer, etc. Does the staff see him taking such a big leap next season that there is no need to get in the portal at his position? Or.......do they think he is still another year away and need to get a stud at his position? And.......can you afford to do that if the fallout is maybe he jumps in the portal himself? What if he is going to be really really good? How do you navigate his situation?

The other wildcard is just how ready/good is Jasper Johnson? Can he come in as a freshman and be ready to lead this team? It seems unlikely given the current make-up of college basketball, and the sport getting seemingly older and more mature. Johnson by all indications is outstanding, but the trend now is that freshman (outside of a Cooper Flagg) no longer are the answer to lead a team to the promise land.

I think it's going to be a fascinating next week, but I think the moves this staff make will be based purely on what they want/need rather than what they can afford and whether they'll be outbid.
Several freshmen made an impact this year. They were on teams where they had to be the focus. Fears and the other guard freshmen.. can’t remember his name were the best players on their team.

We haven’t inked anybody on Dent’s level. Ever. (In the Pope era).

That alone makes him special. Not sure why you wouldn’t be able to see that.

We need someone like that.

Not sure why you think it makes a bit of difference that we are also after other people not as good as Dent but not too much worse than Dent with no sign we’re actually going to get any of them and with the portal drying up soon.

Yaxel would be even better. But Yaxel’s existence is a strange reason to try to argue we don’t need someone at least as good as Dent.

Your own modus operandus is calling people out on things. You try to hit other posters with sniper fire far more often than you just post your own thoughts in threads. It’s only okay to dish it out?

The fact that you see “no sign we’re going to get them” means nothing. Dent was from LA and would have probably chosen UCLA out of high school if they had offered . He always wanted to go back there . How much would you have offered to bring him here ? The whole budget? Three quarters of the budget? Half ?

I feel like the proof is already in the pudding as far as having confidence that CMP will sift, sort, evaluate, have a spending plan, etc and have all bases covered. If he does identify any area he would need help, he has got it. He proved to me, at least, that he knows exactly the right kind of player and attitude is indeed, all important, for a player here at the University of Kentucky.

In my book, none his guys underperformed on the whole this past season. A great talented player may look right to come here on talent alone, but there is so much more to it than that, and CMP knows it. It was evidenced this past season.

And just because a player is really super talented, he may not be the best fit for our team, here.

I think that was part of Cal's dichotomy here at UK. Going purely after the best talent regardless of fit or roster construction, or other concerns (or ABOVE other concerns) ... didnt equate to the level of performance his teams gave. Although he basically said "this isnt for everyone here at kentucky" , he still didn't master matching his talent with the right kind of mental toughness and other things needed to keep the highest level of success he enjoyed here.

Pope comes in, takes a hastily brought together team but the right fit and character and enough talent that gave better results than anything Cal had done in the past 6 years.

we're in great shape now

Go Big Blue !
Lets get a Doctor that can keep us healthy. In my mind the health of the team was this years downfall from the get go.

8-10 if accurate isn't enough to run with the big dogs.
That was a good number 2 years ago.
We need to be at 15 mil + to get multiple top end players plus fill out the roster with good players.
$6-$8 million in just the revenue sharing. Add the NIL money and other projects (boosters / The Blue fund fans donate to / ect.) to generate $$, UK will have plenty. Football in BOTH the Big conference and SEC will receive the bulk of revenue sharing (football is the reason for it to begin with and by far biggest revenue generator). Only about 25-30% of each schools revenue sharing will go to basketball(that is a high figure some will get less than the 25/30%). Read the Maryland / Kevin Willard story on CBS, it talks about revenue sharing in great detail. It is not a UK thing, it is the college football thing. Teams like Villanova who do not have a D1 football program, while not getting near the revenue sharing the SEC / Big 30 gets, will have a nice advantage of not having to see most of it go to football. Basketball is the big show on campus. Which is the EXACT reason Willard left Maryland (Big 30) to go to Villanova. He wasn't happy with the $$$ he was going to be allotted (although it was a very significant amount) and took the Nova job hours after being eliminated from the tournament. He knows Nova will pour a huge portion of their $$$ into basketball, he will be the big man on campus, not play second fiddle to football.

Dent put his name associated with UK but he was always going to UCLA.

“Funny that you think we got “outbid “ by UCONN for Mahaney but we didn’t “outbid” them for the player both teams preferred.”

Your above language is both snarky and demeaning. Was that honestly not your intent?

No it wasn’t. Sometimes texting doesn’t translate well.

Seriously?

How silly.

We haven’t ever signed anyone of that caliber.

We need to.

That is true and is what my original post was based on. All your hypothetical dick measuring is what means nothing.

As this cycle is only days old I was mainly referencing last year….the recruitments that come to mind are (1) Great Osobor (2) Johnell Davis & (3) Austin Mahaney. Anytime it turned into a protracted battle surrounding money we walked away and ceded the player to the other bidder. Pope seems to prefer a “blitz” recruiting strategy where he goes on a personal visit with the player and their family and gets them to commit in a 48 hour period. Anything that becomes longer we walk away. And while I think Dent was always staying west it was worth the risk to make an offer. But the little rumors/reporting we heard was that UK gave Dent only 48 hours to decide on our offer. I’m actually not trying to criticize the coach staff just making observations about our recruiting behavior.
I sincerely believe that forming an opinion on Pope and staff's philosophies and/or competencies with regard to roster building and recruiting the portal, HS, etc. based on what we saw last year is premature. There were so many unknowns at that time for Pope, the recruits, and everyone involved with everything having to be done from the ground up and later than everyone else that it's not likely apples to apples compared to how they'd do it now (or how well they'll do) with a year under their belt, a full staff in place and results from a successful first year out there for recruits to see. Building an initial roster and managing an existing roster are two totally different things and were done in two totally different sets of circumstances.

Then I apologize for getting aggressive with you. If you have premium info that both UCONN and UK preferred Brea I could be wrong. I went back and checked the industry rankings at 4 places and Mahaney was higher in two and Brea was higher in two so my original assessment in our discussion wasn’t as accurate as I thought to be honestly.

Totally agree…just trying to have some basketball discussion as the season ended abruptly and I’m not ready to let go for 6 months with college basketball yet.

No problem man .And I didn’t mean to sound like an Ahole . I only know what our insiders put on the portal board as to what they are hearing is CMP’s priority . Sometimes that list doesn’t match up with industry rankings. But I’m going to need to slow down over here anyway. Eyes are watching, lol.

Just hate to see untrue things being reported and try to correct them with a more informed view. But you’re right, I just need to stay over on HOB . A lot less arguing when everyone has the same info . It’s not fair for me and it’s not fair for you.

Their NIL is insane in trying to move their athletic program forward. Just google "Sac State NIL".
The Sac-12 has not specified whether it has amassed the funds, or if they’re just commitments at this point; they used the word “secured” in a formal statement.

Tells me all I need to know if they are being shady about the language. I know they just recently hired Mike Bibby and all, but they are not outspending other programs to "get whomever they want" or whatever point is being made in this thread.

Who knows where the money will go. Just answering the question about why Sac State was mentioned.
