Kentucky & Michigan For Gwath?

Wasn't Amari DPOY at Drexel?
These guys that are athletic and long, tend to overwhelm mid major teams, but it's a completely different ballgame in the SEC.

We watched Amari allow guards to get layups and put backs all year long, last night was no exception.

I realize this guy is a different guy, but the DPOY in a mid major conference thing, seems great on the surface, but the SEC is such a different animal.

I would rather get guys that have been good in a power conference. But that's just me. CMP knows what he's doing.
SDSU under Dutcher plays defense. They stink on offensive end but they can get after you and defend. I mean that's where UK got Lamont Butler and he turned out to be more than capable of handling the big name opponents/SEC defensively.

Yeah they do and can. I think he would be good here. I love Lamont and wish we had him 3 more years.

Let's be honest, he's better than Garrison right now. Garrison regressed in about every category from his freshman to sophomore season and expecting him to take a big leap next year seems like a stretch. Gwath is skinny, but his shot-blocking numbers speak for themselves. Plus he can handle the ball/take people off the dribble and hit 3s at a pretty good clip. None of which Garrison has shown. Hate to rip on him, but it's the truth.

Watching Maluach at Duke and Chinyelu at Florida make me want us to do the same. Just crazy long, athletic rim protectors who rebound like crazy, dunk everything and protect the rim.

The problem is Mark Pope's offense makes that difficult, because guys like that typically can't run things like Pope needs them to up top.

The other problem is that both of those guys are 250 and 255 pounds respectively, and Gwath is only 205.

Another SDSU transfer for Pope & Co?

He was the MWC Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year.

You've got one source there and then a second that quotes the first. Are we sure the first is reliable? Been a lot of fake posts going around lately

I think Garrison has potential to be a good player and certainly has the physical tools. My concern with him is really whether he has the mentality to ever be a facilitator like this offense appears to require. There was a running joke this year on this board and twitter -- Brandon Garrison: "It's Brandon Garrison time." -- He actually made some really nice passes at times but I don't know it's ever going to be his first priority.

No, but he had faults and limitations and in year 2 of the Pope era, I expect to get a better player than Amari.

Amari couldn't shoot, he didn't defend the rim, he struggled to make free throws, he had 1 move in the paint and it was a simple turn with a shot-put type finish that missed way too often.

He was a brilliant passer and rebounder, but only when he wanted to rebound.
Who came out with the better deal Washington outbidding us for Great Osobor or us getting Williams for less? I know there was talk of both of them coming at one point. I wasn’t buying it, because I don’t think either intended on being a backup, and if Osobor had come, we likely don’t get a multi-year guy in Garrison, assuming he stays that is. Williams outperformed Osobor by quite a bit.

In my opinion, the three worst defenders we had this year as far as letting the opponents blow past them for a layup were Williams, Carr, and Brea. I’m just talking about the main guys. I’m not talking about Perry at all.

Not saying it's the case here, but most of the time when they mention it's Kentucky vs. another school for a guy, they almost always go to that other school. We seem to do better when they're down to about 4 or 5 schools. There's probably some validity to the theory that they're using UK to milk more money from the school they really want to play for (both during and before the NIL Era.... ALLEGEDLY).

In any case, he looks like a good prospect. Love the length and shot blocking stats. The weight is a bit concerning in the violent SEC. How is his lateral quickness and motor? Quick enough to keep up with SEC guards driving out of control to the basket who push off/initiate contact and flail around in an attempt to draw a foul? Can he finish inside offensively? Get put backs? I think more than anything, regardless of stats, I'd like to see some high energy guys at the 4 and 5.

I have think it’s more that Gwath compliments Garrison, like Williams did, good in the areas he isn’t. I like that approach.

I just don't know how this plays out.

We're clearly going after a few 5 men in the portal, but we have Moreno and (presumably) Garrison on the roster. Who is going to be 3rd fiddle?
That will be determined in practice perhaps.
The prior administration decided who starts before the season.

I have this weird nasty feeling that we will miss a lot of top targets and settle on mid tier guys. Hope I’m wrong, but just feel uneasy about it.
The ONLY way that happens is if UK/Pope won’t/ can’t pay the NIL! We will know very soon how committed UK is to raising the necessary funding to compete in this new CBB landscape!

There will be no way to hide the truth.

Okay, but what does this have to do with next years roster?
I didn't say Williams was the wrong guy, I said he has faults and in year 2, we should be getting guys that are better. You can't deny AW has several deficiencies.

100% true and now that CMP has gone through his first season at UK and saw everything that happened, I expect him to find guys that can defend at all 5 positions in addition to all the other qualities that he typically looks for.

Rebounding has to have a higher priority too, holy smokes, this team was awful at protecting the rim and rebounding.

What is the importance of April 7th? TIA
There is none. Players are being promised portions of the revenue sharing already. April 7th is simply the date the agreement gets legally finalized. It's been a factor already since the football transfer portal kicked off this past cycle. And NIL has nothing to do with revenue sharing. Revenue sharing is only going to help more Power 4 teams hang onto players it wants to keep which will make the transfer portal even slimmer pickings than previously this cycle. It's not at all going to level the playing field.

Agree. Pope learned alot from the SEC this year. I suspect he will adjust, recruit, and coach accordingly.

With the physicality of the SEC, I'm not sure how much of a fit Gwath could be. It's nice he can shoot and stretch the floor, but the kid would definitely get pushed around down low. If we do get him, I would like to see him actually play the 4 and stretch the defense. But what do I know.

Relax, lots of good players will still enter. Lamont Butler didn't enter the portal last year until April 24th. There is still A LOT of time left in the cycle.

And Michigan is a big brand with NIL dollars who used their 2 big men (Wolf and Goldin) this year about as well as anybody.

This is a marathon and let's see how it shakes out.
Think a lot of guys are going to try to get through prior to the April 7 decision on NIL.
