Keion Brooks - What if

And at UW he leads the conference in scoring. I think that is Cal’s inability to develop players. KB was average at best for 3 years here. He hits the portal and "blossoms.?" I just wonder why. Playing 5 freshman is not and has not been sustainable. Won't be this year either and we will all lose our minds in about a month.
Even bad teams have a best player.

They say that Keion is now a POTY candidate. I am happy for him because he got realistic about developing his game. What does it take to keep a Keion Brooks in Lexington?
lol. Stop starting players based on their recruiting profile. If you return at UK. You failed. Have a seat.

POTY in his weak conference maybe, he was always a a solid player, he’s averaging like 20 a game. They are terrible and shoots whenever he wants. He’s the same player there as he was here. He wanted a bigger role and to be the man. He couldn’t do that here so it worked out fine.

Just watched the start of the game. Brooks still can’t dribble, threw a lazy pass that resulted in a layup the other way.

Wheeler also airballed an out of control 10 foot floater on the first play of the game.

It’s like watching the JV game after the varsity. Not the same caliber of players we have now.
Exactly, I’ve caught a couple of their games. 1.) they are the same players as here. 2.) the team sucks. 3.) they need a hair cut 😂 the Afro is out of control!

Yep first play of thr game Sahvir done wat Sahvir does by trying to take his guy on 1on1 to the hoop for a layup to leave it short or get his shit thrown and I was like thank you Sahvir for taking that shit on the road to Washington. It was very thoughtful of him. I don't think I couldve watched him do that one more time in a UK jersey because I didn't have the stomach for it lol.
That and aI couldn’t watch his man stand 5 feet away from him and clog up the lane so nobody could cut or get open because it was 4 on 5, depending on the lineup 3 on 5. On offense.

Or it could be because Keion Brooks is a fifth year senior who is a former 5 star playing in a garbage conference. Who is probably the focal point for their offense.

Had he never left he'd probably be pretty good here too.

Unless you want to credit the developmental genius of Mike Hopkins.

Wheeler quit the team, I don't know why that isn't talked about more. Under the guise of an "injury" ... the true story is he decided he was transferring after he lost starting roll to Cason and then he quit the team. We could have really used wheeler in games as a backup. There were games we needed him, but he quit. Nobody talks about it, F wheeler. I would never say that about a UK player but I really believe wheeler quit on our team.

Brooks I never had a really problem with, he did what he could as far as a basketball player for us. That said, when he made the uneducated Rupp comment I thought he was a little too old for me to give him a pass and was very disappointed he didn't rebuttle or apologize later for his ignorance.
I get he was a kid at the time when he said it, but like you said, he never took it back. He meant what he said and that’s fine, but I can’t help I don’t want someone with that mindset representing our program.

Did anyone even watch him today? He's a volume shooter. He may be a little better at shooting now, but he's basically the same player on a bad team, taking most of the shots. I'm good.

None of us should be wasting time watching Washington.

Brooks actually has good shooting percentages this year. 49.4% on FGs, 38.9% on 3PTs, and 79.6% on FTs.

3PT% is way up from his last 4 years and his FG% is much better than last year with the same amount of attempts per game.

Well, it’s not as hard playing against the comp he’s seeing at Washington. Fact. He’s not overly athletic, has poor handles, and is slow laterally (and slow in general). Having these issues usually means getting your ass beat in a conference full of athletic dudes who can move, jump, and guard. Simple as that.

did you just say Cal can't develop players ? LMAO HE LITERALLY IS THE BEST EVER PERIOD. AT THAT. He can be criticized for some things but NO ONE has ever got players to be their best selfs and ready for the NBA better then Cal. THE PROOF IS IN THE NBA ALL STAR GAME.

He can re recruit 5stars. They are NBA all star talent before they arrived in Lex. They develop in the league and not in their one year in Lex. Don't be ridiculous. He is not a good coach and good coaches dont just roll the ball out on the floor like Cal does. He gets the LEAST out of their talent.

This. Cal has produced less result with more quality of talent ... than any other coach in the history of the game. The UK Program provides a national platform required to draw the attention to these players. Cal is the mouthpiece. Why didn't Cal install OAD at Memphis just as he's done at UK? The reason is UK has built-in momentum wherein Cal can just plug in quality players and immediately has the attention of NBA scouts. A school like Memphis requires so much more work to just begin to generate some momentum of consistent interest that it's easy to overlook potentially good players there. It's an advantage that UK has, and Cal tapped into this at UK with his OAD sales pitch, whose purpose is to fast-track quality players into the League after one year at UK. Most of these players struggle while at UK, don't win as much as any prudent person would imagine and truthfully don't really learn how to play the game until 2-3 years of League play, if they can survive that long. John Wooden, at UCLA, had unbelievable talent during his years there, much like Cal, except Wooden was a quality coach and focused on winning Titles for UCLA and win he did and produced a remarkable record that still stands today. Cal simply squandered his once in a lifetime opportunity at UK with that plethora of talent ... he just wasn't either coach enough to do it or his was a greater purpose, well above winning Titles.

No wonder he ran into picks.

POTY candidate? On a team that might not even make the NCAA tournament?

Lol okay
Yep, it's highly unlikely they'll make the tournament. They're not even on 2nd teams out list. They're not mentioned at all. Keion won't win national player of the year. He's done his part, to be sure. He's not much more efficient than he was at UK. He just gets 15 or more shots a game because Washington doesn't have better options. And hey, that's why he went there. He could be the show there. More power to him. No chance of winning any championships but many chances to shoot and score in losing efforts.

Simple, better coaching and better player development.

Cal is not one to develop players. He expects their HS or AAU coach to have done that for him. I do give him credit for Jorts.
Jorts might have been so much work for him, he just decided it was easier to load up on freshmen and have them bolt after 1 year.
