KAT comment

It’s crazy how if Cal had just won 2 more games in 2015 he would have gone down as a top-6 coach all time in CBB history. Instead he’ll go down as the biggest underachiever the sport has ever seen.
The only reason Cal has one N.C. is the 2012 team was the exception to Cal's guard dominant dribble the cover off the ball teams. 2015 should have never lost to Wisconsin, but Cal managed to lose that game with all that talent.

Can’t overstate the importance of loyalty to the Harrison’s when you have underachieving benchwarmers like Ulis and Booker riding the pine. I mean, who gives a crap if we win a NC or not. Cal lost me that night, I also nearly quit watching altogether when he later covered himself by indirectly saying it was more about the kids than winning. Just glad we have a guy in here who understands the expectations and can relate to the fans.

I recall in that game Booker struggled. I think he did most of March. Not sure about Ulis. The bigger mistake in that game was taking our foot off the gas when we were up something like 6 with 3-4min to go. You know Cal told the twins to do that.

I watched the Baker/Chapman homer broadcast of the Wisconsin game. Rex pointed out how Frank the Tank kept getting away with kneeing defenders on picks (probably why Harrison said "eff that n****" in the post game presser). Any other coach could have probably brought that to the refs' attention and gotten some calls. But no way Cal was going to get a break from Johnny and the Rooferettes.

Ben Howland was a three-time Final Four coach. A few more twists and turns of the ball and he's a three-time national championship coach instead of a guy who mostly be forgotten.

If he had developed them during the regular season (his job) they probably struggle less.

Booker may have been struggling, can't remember, but the twins probably weren't on fire. The twins wanted to be the heroes' but turned out to be zereo's. But a true "coach" would have called time out after the 1st ball hogging show, instead of letting them do it several times in a row. KAT should have touched the ball in the paint every possession, but the "coach" lacked the knowledge to make sure that happened.

Booker was getting destroyed by Dekker, but Ulis would have fed it to KAT everytime as they couldn’t stop him. The Harrison’s wouldn’t pass it to him. I do remember Cal screaming at them to feed him but he should have taken Andrew out as he was looking for his brother instead of KAT.

There's no way of knowing if Ulis was ready for that specific game, in the way he was ready most of his sophomore year. That's a tough situation to turn to your undersize freshman guard (who is mostly unknown at this point) and say, go save us kid. Hindsight is 20/20.

There's a ton of bad coaching jobs and snafus by Cal. I find that the Wisconsin game was just an awful officiating screw job, a bad matchup for UK without Poythress and going against Dekkar, against probably one of the better teams of the decade in Wisconsin. If the shot clock violation is properly called, we win, and we probably win the title because that Duke team was really not that great.

Trying to force the platoon, and force minutes for all the guys he'd promised minutes to, was the fatal mistake. We should have seen more time running Ulis with the Twins vs playing 3 bigs.

Dean Smith says hello...

Ulis was 4th on the team in minutes (24.5mpg), only 1.0 and 1.3 mpg behind the twins & 1.4 behind WCS. Booker was 6th just 3mpg behind Ulis.
And I bet if you look at the minutes once SEC play started (and we had ditched "the Platoon") that Ulis and Booker probably averaged a couple more mpg than their full season mpg.
Interestingly, KAT was not 5th in minutes he was 7th, 5th was Lyles.

I’d like to see just 3 letters on the T-shirts.

CCC
Anyone who didn't see the KAT interview wouldn't get the "Blank CD" reference (I saw it & thought funny).
And anyone not on a UK message board won't get the CCC reference.

I would think maybe something like "Thank you, Razorbacks" for taking him off our hands.

Cheater McDicknose, started all of the cheating at North Carolina* and thought he got away with it, now his name is tarnished because of all the cheating. I never liked him, he called Robey A sob and hated Kentucky.
And Rick wore that as a badge of honor i'm sure. Robey was a beast. Kind of our Bill Laimbeer of college basketball, but with more class.

Would've been THE coach in CBB history. Only undefeated modern season in history (40 wins; 0 Losses) and two titles? Yeah, no one would be topping that for at least a few decades.

That might be right but Booker left UK and immediately dropped 45 in the summer league once he got out of Cal’s system. Kid was better than what we got to experience and I think it was a result of the coach.

In fairness one of those twins trying to be a hero was a big one just the previous season lol.

Both teams actually played pretty well, based on the stats. For such a big game, the turnovers were kinda low for both teams.
It may have been rebounding that hurt us the most throughout the game, especially offensively, as we only managed six (6).
How did Willie Cauley-Stein play thirty-three (33) minutes and fail to get an offensive rebound ?? That's pretty amazing ...

Plus while we were really good in 2015, people tend to downplay or forget just how good Wisconsin was that season. They had an outstanding offense. I mean that team was 36-4 that season with two of those losses being to eventual champion Duke

Dean Smith sucked. So did the four corners. And he wasted a lot of talent, to be sure. But if you look at the # of draft picks, it isn’t even close to what Cal squandered. And as stated previously, the man had 2 titles.

Smith owned the dubious distinction for decades, but Cal has supplanted him.
You are forgetting that Dean had guys 3 and 4 years in his system who were drafted on production. Cal only had them for 1 and they were drafted mostly on their potential.

I think all 3 teams that year were rated as some of the highest in a 10 year span.

That is a little far fetched. Cal will still go down as one of the greatest College Basketball Coaches of all time. He took UMASS to the final four and in the process he beat UK and Rick Pitino, one of the greatest teams of all time. He took Memphis to the championship game. He took UK to 4 final fours in 5 years and won a championship. He is the second all-time winningest coach at one of the winningest programs in the game. It is time to move on and stop trying to justify losing Cal was the right thing. Everyone agrees it was time for both parties to go separate ways. Now enjoy Pope and let Cal enjoy the accolades he has earned. Cal will always be one of the best coaches to ever walk the UK sidelines and no matter what crap you spread on these message boards will change that. Go Cats!
