Sorry if this has been discussed but I think he was paying Coach Pope a tremendous compliment.

I was fortunate to play on a state championship high school football team. Our coaching staff was outstanding. Players knew that even if the other team could match or slightly beat our talent, our staff would make in game and halftime adjustments. This gives players great confidence in the system.

Pope is so analytical. He understands not only the assignment, but how to correct his work before the assignment is due.

Yeah, it is a great compliment. He kept saying that the great teams are able to adjust during the game, not after game or between games. The great ones can adjust in game, and that's what we've seen from Pope multiple times already, and most significantly in the 2 biggest games of our young season thus far- vs Duke and Gonzaga.

To come back against both Duke and Gonzaga, down at half, not a whole lot of talent that can just go take the game over, is remarkable. Yes the players executed, but that doesn't happen unless the coach is on his A-game. No AAA-game.

Cal had some comebacks, but it probably wasn't due to coaching (although I do think he can motivate).. instead it was having future NBA pros go bananas like Malik Monk or Anthony Davis.

Not a lot of coaches can make those come backs, and this is still a brand new team, and a brand new coach with said team. Remarkable. It really is. There's a greater than 0% chance that in a year or two, Pope replaces Hurley as the "it" college coach. I really believe that.

He’s gonna have to win a title fast to do that. But I agree it could happen I just don’t know how fast though.

Pope knows basketball and knows how to coach, refreshing after the last 7 or so years of do nothing coaching

Just food for thought. I too have been getting stressed about the slow starts.

But, maybe it is that lack of over-all, all-american talent that starts games. As a experienced, veteran team, they continue to weather the storm, stick to the plan, or make adjustments and have the metttle to execute. (Via those adjustments.)
Just my two cents.

My high school basketball coach was much the same way. I actually talked to him last night and told him Pope adjusting and using the 1-3-1 reminded me of him when I played for him many years ago.
