Kansas currently with 30 game home winning streak...do we have a shot?

I don't. The Helms and any mythical National Championship (Coach's Poll, AP, UPI) are never better than a tournament. A 68-team tournament is better than a 8-team tournament. My point is that how much better is an 8-Team Tournament than a mythical championship? A step or two maybe but not heads and tails. The modern tournament started in 1984 when it expanded to 64+ teams.

But I could make a case that the best team in 1953-54 wasn't LaSalle, the NCAA Tournament winner but it was Kentucky, the 1953-54 Helms Champions who didn't go to the Tournament. And, I know that you know that those decisions were not made by 'marketing guy' but a committee of sports executives and sports media.

Sometimes hindsight has a better view.

Ahh, but how many times does the best team actually win the tournament? Yet those that do are the champs regardless.

I look at Helms as the championships before the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Yes mythical. But mythical like the 'Bama, Michigan and Notre Dames Helms football championship. Or like OU, Nebraska, Texas's UPI and AP Football Championships. The BCS was a good step. The 4-Team Play-off is a better step. I still count Kansas '52 Championship but I think championships after 1984 have a stronger meaning when the tournament expanded.

Best team than the team that actually won the tournament? Sounds like a great thread. But I don't start threads on Rupp. I am just a guest here.

I said champs, not best team. So is a Helms a "best team" award?

Can't even think about equating a Helms to an AP or UPI. They at least had many writers who voted for a champion. Helms was awarded by a 1 man committee. A bread maker. Worthless, or if they had value UK would hang theirs.

Good points RC. Point to be noted is the playing field had to increase as the parity of competition had increased. Actually they should've increased the field in the 70"s when it really increased substantially imo. Merely the trail of collegiate hoops evolution. It's all good and wins count right back to 1893 when began. I think that's right.

No way of knowing what we will look like by then. I think this team has a lot of growing left in them and we will see a different team by then. Sure KU have the upper hand but to count us out totally is foolish.

Cats have just as good of a chance to walk out of there with a W as any team in the country. That's a fact and don't forget it!

I understand you are not a Helms supporter. Not that it would make any difference to you, but Helms Championships was only sponsored by the Helms Bakery. Kind of like the Winston Cup of NASCAR. The driving force of the Helms Athletic Foundation was Bill Schroeder. He was a track and baseball star and later a General Manager of Pacific Coast League baseball teams. The committee that determined the award was made up of sports media and other sports executives like Schroeder. It wasn't an 'one-man committee'.

I see we are getting another Helms briefing tonite. [winking] Don't fret too much RC, we get beat to death with it from the guys that do it "The Carolina Way" through the years. Hope all is well up your way.

In the last 13 years, there have only been 9 teams to walk out of AFH with a win. 9 out of 206. That '...just as good of a chance to walk out of there with a W as any team in the country' is currently just 4.3%

I didn't figure to win any popularity contest. I like Carolina too. They play basketball in building named after a Jayhawk. Crawford is cold today. Didn't get out of the 40's. How is Houston?

Sounds good to me. UK's always been pretty good at ending opponents home win streaks. Y'all will get the same favor next year in Rupp but with Cal's home W/L % it's a bit lower than that iirc. Sure makes the games exciting doesn't it?

Oops, Houston is nasty, wet and gray for past few days. Great for watching the bowl games, watching the Cats & eating plenty of brisket!

I have heard a couple of times about a return trip to Rupp next season. I don't know if the SEC/Big12 have determined the match-ups for next season. I know that we play Florida home and away for the last two Challenge games. I hope that we do play at Rupp next season. Great building!

We should have plenty of time to adjust between now and then. We'll definitely be one of their tougher games.

Kentucky is a big game, but Super Bowl? Not sure about that. OU on Monday, Iowa State at Hilton, OU back in Norman, WVU there, are all bigger games and more of a challenge. Don't get me wrong I will be watching on Jan-31 but let's keep things In perspective.

That's such crap. And you play those teams every year. How often do you get the number 1 program in basketball on your home floor. This is a once a decade type game.

It's a big game. But it isn't a 'Super Bowl' game, sorry. We will have the Coaches' Poll #1 team, OU, on Monday on our court.

Awarded about 20 years after the fact? I'm sure basketball had quite the following nationally in 1922. All evidence pointed to Schroeder being the committee. Article about it in Big Blue History. Glad Rupp pushed for a tournament to decide the champ. We could say we have 10 or more championships, but they need to be earned. UNC didn't hang theirs until Duke was catching them. They know better, most don't claim them

I don't think id be on a Kentucky board talking smack if i was a Kansas fan....lmao short memory i guess

It will clearly be their super bowl after that horribly embarrassing loss last season. Wasn't that Self's worst loss as the KU coach? He's had plenty of embarrassing losses at KU, particularity in the tournament, but IIRC the 32 point beat down on national tv was the most points wise.

There's no doubt they'll be the favorites do to home court advantage, but I would be shocked if they came even close to what we did to them last season.

And haha @ comparing Helm's to NCAA Tournament titles. That's just pathetic.

We need to make some big strides in the next seven games if we have any aspirations of beating the Jayhawks as they are really playing well right now.

Love Cal, but oh how I wish he would retire that phrase.
Why? It's the truth. If you haven't realized yet how all these teams prepare for us, in and out of conference, have some of the best individual games of their lives, then I don't what to tell ya. Not to mention their ticket prices double or triple for that game! Wonder why? ...............I got it. IT MUST BE THEIR SUPER BOWL! Lol

I'm inclined to think not. Like Rupp, the Phog is a tough place for anyone to win any year. I don't think this UK team is quite in the same league as KU, OU, and MSU this year, at least not right now. Honestly, I'm just hoping we don't embarrass ourselves. I had thought of making the drive over. It's long, but easy. Not this year though. Just am not seeing it.

More important because of conference, but more of a challenge? Ok, skippy, we'll see..........

I don't want this to be a blow to anyone's ego but I see the game at Norman vs. OU, the game at Ames vs. ISU and the game at Morgantown vs. WVU bigger challenges than the UK game at The Phog. They have more meaning because they are conference games. Playing an away game is always tougher than a home game. Kansas has beaten these Big12 programs like a drum over the past 11 seasons. Those teams and fans have circled those dates on the schedule since the day the Big12 schedule was announced. I don't think Jan-30th is your Super Bowl and it isn't ours. But those circled dates are theirs.

I won't lie; I would love to see the Jayhawks stack another 150 on the Wildcats. The party after the last time the Jayhawks did that to Kentucky was legendary. But I was younger and single and enjoyed the victory in ways that I will not attempt this time around.

This is what I suggested a good thread would be...
People are always going to argue about who the real "best" team is, even in playoff situations- see how many people wanted to downplay Golden State last year, or how few times the team with the best record has won the World Series the last decade. College basketball is a little different because of the 1 and out format, but really, in the last 20 years, I think there have been a lot of teams that won the title that could make a legit argument that they were the best (as in they could have won a playoff series against any challenger) , at least by the end of the year. My list:

Duke 2015- which pains me, and there's no doubt that UK was the story all year last year, but the fact is that Duke had more really high-quality wins by the end of the year.
UL 2013
UK 2012 (indisputably)
UNC 09 (indisputably)
Kansas 08
Florida 07 (indisputably)
Florida 06 (late-blooming team, off the radar, but they won that tournament pretty easily, and then repeated)
UNC 05
UConn 04
Maryland 02
Duke 01
Michigan State 2000
UConn 99
UK 96 (indisputably)

14 of 20 that I think had an argument, 4 where no one else really had an argument at all.

UK is improving, last night proved that. Yes, we of course "have a shot", I never count my Cats out of any game. Will it be tough? Yep, it sure will, but we're UK, and Cal will have our boys as ready as they can make them. Like Rupp, Phog is a tough place to play and I look forward to the game.

Just not going to learn much from the game...if it was on a neutral court I'd care some. No way UK wins at KU. No way KU wins next year if you return to Rupp. Just how it is. Two teams that dominate at home.

I seem to remember KU winning the last time they played in Rupp. Without their star player even.

I thought K/U vs UK was done deal for a home/home series just as we did for UCLA. Hope I'm not wrong.

I would hope so, too. It's not a home and home series setup by the schools though. Since it's part of the B12/SEC Challenge the conferences make the match-ups, with probably some input from the networks.

That said, I think it would be absolutely foolish for KU not to be the scheduled match-up at Rupp next season. If not, then it isn't because it was either school deciding not to.

It's just because they are very confident this year. Probably will win, but if we somehow pull that one out, I hope he comes back to get his plate of crow.

I don't dispute the assertion. I am just sick of hearing that phrase.

Keep dreaming.

I don't see it happening either. Bill would shut that down. The walk-ons would be on the court. The air would be removed from the ball. Not sure what Roy was thinking to stack 150 on Tubby. I never really saw a mean streak in Roy but it must have been there to do that.

Which is precisely why one shouldn't completely count out the visiting team, in this case UK. Especially when they hold a 22-6 all time record vs you. I don't expect a win, but I welcome the challenge.
