I half jokingly floated this idea awhile back and it went over like a lead balloon.
The truth is Stoops couldn't even run the wishbone because it takes very specific players to make it run. He can't even get average players to run his pedestrian balanced offense, much less specialty players.
The Triple Option is also one of the most disciplined offensive schemes in football. There is zero room for mistakes. That is the exact opposite of anything Stoops related.
Dude should go back to being a DC or just retire with all the millions he has stolen from UK.
FEAR THE VEER!!!!!
Seriously, FirewithFire is spot on.
Military schools thrive with dive-keep-pitch option variants because they can utilize smaller and speedier OL who will lay vicious cut blocks laterally every play, AND they have multi-year starters with the smarts and discipline to run this highly complex offense.
For most HCs, conversion to a TO scheme takes at least a year….sometimes as many as two or three to recruit and coach up the right players.
Not in the cards for UK even if we wanted a TO scheme.
For years, one of the best in the option business was ironically KY born, FCS legendary coach Mike Ayers of Wofford College in Spartanburg , SC. Ayers played for Roy Kidd winning a 1AA NC at EKU before a stint in the USMC and finishing college playing for Georgetown (KY). At a private school with only 1,800 students, Ayers was 207-139-1 at Wofford with 5 SoCon championships and 8 FCS playoff appearances.
If UK wanted to go run-centric, maybe we should dial up Bill Snyder’s scheme (1 back, double option with a mobile QB that has approximately a 65-35 run pass mix) that he used to raise Kansas St from worst in D1 to making a splash in the BCS.
But….Bill Snyder ain’t walking through that door.
GBB!
