Jon Sumrall Watch

For about 4 pages worth of posts.

Frankly, it would take an Arkansas/Cal type of miracle for a change to occur this year at Kentucky.

North Carolina??

I don’t see that job having the allure of the SEC for Sumrall.
For Sumrall it could be the same level job at either school. Both are basketball powerhouses and football will always be the little brother on campus who pays for everything. He can come home and try to succeed in the SEC or head to the ACC and have to play Clemson, the Tech boys, Florida State(they will rise again), and a few other teams. Definitely not the gauntlet of the SEC but challenging enough.

Astonishingly, Tulane could STILL make the playoff. They need Boise St to lose in the MWC championship and to Colorado St, not UNLV. If Tulane wins the AAC, in that scenario, what other midmajor will have better credentials for the 5th highest ranked conference champion spot? Maybe Jacksonville State or Liberty?

I saw an estimate of 2% of their making the Play Offs, but your scenario reasonably sounds higher.

There is a chance, but it’s VERY small. UNLV would have to lose at home to a really bad Nevada team that’s lost 6 in a row. Then CSU would need to win their final game and beat Boise at Boise.

Knowing it’s a long shot for Tulane, I’d love to see UNLV make the playoff after the QB left the team 4 games into the season.

As crazy as it sounds, it really wasn’t that long ago that Kentucky hired away Alabama’s coach who had just won the SEC and taken the Crimson Tide to the Sugar Bowl.
He was also on a flaming hot seat with 3 straight losses to Auburn and got out about 12 months before the ax was going to fall. It was bad enough to where over and over on this forum, UK fans (mistakenly) insist he was fired there.

I wouldn’t think so, but he starts next year leading the hot seat list, if that happens.

At a normal place i would agree, but nothing normal about that place. AU has already flipped a couple of their commits. But if he survives a loss to AU you are right he will have hottest seat in the conference.

Which raises the interesting question....who would Bama target?
I don't know. There is no real slam dunk candidate except for Smart and he's not leaving Georgia. The other guys they looked at, last year, were Sarkasian, Lanning, and Norvell, but none wanted to leave their current jobs, and Norvell is pretty much with tanked stock now. Maybe Kiffen, maybe Cignetti.

Assuming nobody gets the ax this year, next year could be brutal for SEC coaches. DeBoer, Pittman, Napier, Kelly, Freeze, Venables all at risk. Stoops would also be, anywhere else, but not here.

Yeah, Smart's a reach but crazy things happen. Let's not forget Vince Dooley played at Auburn but coached at GA while Pat Dye played at GA but coached at Auburn. Don't think Sark leaves TX, Lanning's drawing a lot of NFL interest, Norvell will be lucky to be coaching in the OVC in 3 years, Cignetti's age hurts him. I guess Kiffin still has rabbit in this blood but he better start winning big soon. Definitely be interesting if it unfolds just right.

If it isn't summrall, who else can we actually get thats worth an entire reset and huge buyout?

I can't think of anyone.
First, Kentucky isn’t firing Stoops. He would have to leave on his own, thus negating the whole buyout thing. Second, there are several coaches out there who would at least listen to UK. Dan Mullen is one, though I’m not all that excited about him. Will Stein has ties to Kentucky. I used to work for his uncle about 20 years ago. I know he played for UofL, but his dad played for UK if I’m not mistaken.

That’s very true. However, at the time, a much younger version of me thought CM Newton was some type of magician and genius for stealing Pitino from the Knicks and Curry from Alabama. It actually looked pretty good with Curry at first going to the Peach Bowl, but didn’t take long to completely crash and burn.

Even getting to the Peach Bowl at 6-5 took 4 years
