Jon Sumrall Watch

The problem with the "handing the keys" theory is that Stoops won't be selecting the next coach. Also, Sumrall will probably have P4 opportunities this off season if he wants. Baylor, NC State, Arkansas, if they fall apart. Etc.

Lol.

Stoops and Sumrall are very tight. Sumrall is the most prominent member of Stoops’ coaching tree.
I'm not going to throw Sumrall into stoops tree of coaching . I don't think his 2 yrs at UK really made the difference in him being a HC . STOOPS hasn't had a bunch of his assistants go on to be HCs.

Well, that “2 yr” was three seasons, ‘19, ‘20 and ‘21.

“STOOPS hasn’t had a bunch of his assistants go on to be HCs.”

Yes, hence his stature.

If you’re a program that may be in the market for an HC and you’re not paying attention to what Brian Hartline is/has been doing…come on…

Summerall will probably get a big offer before Stoops leaves/retires. Maybe even SEC.

Hope he continues to do well but I just don’t know if the timing of his star rising is going to line up with this gig opening.

Will be interesting to see who calls on him this offseason or next and where he ends up.

As for this job theres lot of other candidates out there I would be paying attention to.

No . . . Stoops will not select the next Coach, but an Athletic Director likely will.

And remember who Barnhart scheduled for a Sunday interview the Saturday evening everyone thought Stoops was headed for A & M. There were three names, and only one currently outside of the state/program.

If Sumrall gets another P4 job, would that prohibit coming to Kentucky?

Much would depend on his contract language, but his two year stint at Troy, and Lane Kiffin’s one year stint at UT (among others) show that having another job does not absolutely prohibit a lateral move, even after a short time.

Really, it boils down to whether Jon Sumrall wants to come back to Kentucky. If so, when taking another P4 job, he could negotiate a lower buyout, as did Stoops in his initial contract with UK.

I think a big part of the future will be connected to Mitch’s retirement. Very few potential coaches (with multiple opportunities like Sumrall) will want to come to program before a new AD. New ADs are prone to have quick triggers so they can put their fingerprint on hiring coaches.

I have no clue how much longer Mitch or Stoops plan to work before retiring. I am confident Mitch has UK’s best interest at heart. I haven’t agreed with all his coaching hires but I believe he wants to leave UK in very good shape.

I have a feeling Mitch will retire when his current contract is up in 2028. Stoops contract runs through 2031, but I will be shocked if he makes it that long, probably leaving on his own.

I have no clue when Stoops wants to walk away. My guess is that IF Stoops walks away in the next couple of years that Mitch will leave with him and let the next AD make the hire.

Things never go as smoothly in reality as they are planned. In today’s world, a football coach is hired fairly fast for multiple reasons. I can easily see a world where Sumrall doesn’t want to be in a transitional mess, but would be interested in being “the man after the next man.” If Stoops was to step away in a couple of years and Sumrall were to come before Mitch leaves, then Mitch will put in a huge buyout to protect Sumrall for a few years.

So true.

I’ve always suspected Stoops would view his 60th birthday as a good time to retire from head-coaching.

And none of us really know the depth of the current relationships being discussed. But, reading the tea leaves, I “believe” that Stoops, Sumrall and Barnhart are on good terms, and communicate regularly. From only the slightest contact I’ve had with these folks, there seems to be a mutual respect between them.

Could this relationship actually lead to a timetable/plan on future events?

Who knows? But I suspect it might.

He is getting his name out there. Several schools we have speculated hiring new coaches for 25 have his name in the mix, maybe not the favorite but he is making a name for himself.

AU is already fed up with Freeze, don't think he gets fired at end of 24, but with the money they are spending they are expecting a much better return. Billy probably needs to reserve a moving company. Beamer's goodwill is wearing out, he could be done at end of 24

Had we put an effort into retaining Bear Bryant instead of prioritizing Basketball (and I know the Cadillac vs Lighter deal was largely debunked) we might be the greatest overall college athletic program in history.
Even debunked it wasn't hard to see where the support lied over the years. CMS is the first coach who's had a somewhat fair fight.

Man, I just think that's an epically bad decision. How many SEC football teams hire an assistant to be HC? If Brad White wants to be a HC he needs to leave and get a job. Prove himself and then see where things are. It's just an insanely bad idea.
Heck in this environment SEC teams can hire head coaches just to be assistants. No reason to go with someone that has never been a head coach if other logical options are available.

I’m very appreciative of Stoops, and I generally like him. That said, I think the peak has come and we are going the wrong way. I could be wrong and hope I am, but seeing Vandy being better than us is more than I can stomach.

Can we keep Vince Marrow as RC/AHC? I'm tired of watching this ssdd. The tide has gone out and we're stuck. This sht we're consistently producing on the field is exhausting. No control of the players. No discipline. No game awareness. Not clock management. No identity. Refusing to keep using what is clearly working. Moral victories and playing mind games with some players, while letting others hurt the team over and over.

This shts got to change

And Tulane was off the week of October 12, 2024, returning to action next Saturday, October 19 at home against Rice.

Refusing to keep using what is clearly working.

How many yards were we averaging running between the tackles Saturday in the first half. And what kind of offensive play does not require AA Tackles, and might actually disguise an occasional interior hold?

What’s the old mantra. . . “make them stop it.”

I don't think any coach has had the OC turnover that stoops has had in his coaching career.
He is either running them off because he actually controls them to a point that they get the rap of being a bad OC. Stoops is a OCD control freak and he will never get a good up and comming OC to come to Lexington to die on Stoops hill. We , UK, UK fans needs a complete house cleaning in our football program. I am shocked we have people saying, " I am not wishing him gone right now." We are 12 years in to doing the same thing every year but expecting a different result. If any of us had an employee with the work performance of Stoops, he or she would be fired. Why do we continue to accept the trash job we are receiving with Stoops and his staff? Someone please explain! Seriously please give the ractional for the "not now' to fire Stoops. Money does not count. A good coach would triple the revenue for UK. People will gladly support a WINNER. We for 12 years are below 50% wins in the SEC. That means we have been a 12 year loser. NOW is tthe time for change. I would not let him board the flight to Gainesville for the game on Saturday. Name an interim coach and start a National search before all the other schools are in a search for a head coach. I just rewatched the Vandy game. It make you sick to be dominated by Vanderbilt. Compare every position, defense and Offense and we have higher rated players at every position, yet they kicked our butt. They wanted the game more. Their coach motivated those kids. UK kids ran their mouth and showed little to no guts. Sad, just sad. Truth hurts. I know next summer there will be a group on this site telling us we will make the 12 team playoff, beat GA, TN, and SC, just wait for those fools gold post to show up.

The fighting Sumrall’s defeat Rice, 24-10 at home, moving to 5-2.

Sumrall is now 28-6 in his career (82 %).

Only three teams are left in the AAC without a conference loss. Army is 6-0 in conference play, Navy 4-0, and Tulane 3-0. The front end of Tulane’s schedule was loaded with their P4 opponents, Oklahoma and K-State.

And now a road victory over North Texas State, 45-37, moving Tulane to 6-2, with playoff hopes alive.

Sumrall moves to 29-6 as a head coach,

Tulane has the 13th ranked scoring offense in the nation. That are 34th in scoring defense, and 24th in total defense.

Sumrall will be at P4 conference team before UK can afford to dump Stoops and hire him. IMO

A bad “venture.”

Three Stoops brothers attended and played for Iowa. All three brothers wore No. 14. When their father died of an untimely heart attack coaching a high school game, Stoops was playing for Iowa. Stoops’ father was buried with an Iowa jersey, No. 14, tucked beneath his arm.

The entire Stoops family is and will always be close to the Iowa program.

Who told me these things?

Mark Stoops, Vince Marrow, Bradley Dale Peveto and Jon Sumrall. Bradley Dale’s father also succumbed to a heart attack whilst coaching in Texas, a tragic incident he and the Stoops family share.

Do not underestimate the pull of Iowa on Mark and his whole family.
Add in the fact that when folks start feeling unwanted one place they are naturally drawn to the place(s) that they have warm feelings for out of comfort.

So who do you recommend as Stoops replacement?

You could throw out half a dozen names, but at this stage it has to be someone who has at least put a a solid stamp on a good program. Forget about the latest and greatest coordinator (we've been there) or the young upstart (we've been there)

With the 34-3 road victory over Charlotte, Sumrall moves to 30-6 as a head coach, an 83% winning rate.

Tulane is now 7-2, and 5-0 in conference play, still undefeated in AAC play, along with Army and Navy.
