Jon Sumrall and his Troy Trojans are on ESPNU right now

He has that Defense playing good football. They should be 6-1, they had App St. beat on the road if not for a fluke Hail Mary play.

Troy loves former Kentucky players as coaches too. They've been my 2nd team when Brown was there and again since Sumrall is there. Didn't pay much attention when the guy who took over for Brown was there.

A lot of people around here will die on us if we hire another "D" guy to lead the program. I'll help bury all of them.
Everyone loves offense, I kind of do too. The thing is, defense keeps you in most every game with a chance to win. What is the old saying "All I need is a chance"!

I really like Sumrall but would be nervous if he took over for Stoops. Neal Brown was wildly successful at Troy too and he's about to get fired at WVa after about 3 years.

Somebody should've told the play by play guy the name is "Sumrall" and not "Sumarall."

Two totally different coaches imo. Listen to them address their teams and talk about strategy/players. Neal is an oc pretending to be a head coach. Summrall is the real deal. He went from position coach to head man which is pretty amazing.

Stoops has an eye for identifying recruits early but even more so for coaches. He's made some incredible finds.

If stoops leaves, he should be the one and only phone call we make. I say only because we can't let him say no.

Hate to say it but defensive football requires so much depth at all positions.
It is also not what wins championships in today's cfb...check out the top teams in the country. The only thing keeping UK from being 7-0 right now is its offense.

Georgia and Ohio State, the top two teams have stellar defenses.
And averaging 40+ ppg...nothing wrong with having the mindset of having both. In UK's two losses we scored 14 and 19 points. That won't get it. Look, I'm not a pass happy guy, just one that follows cfb and a firm believer that scoring should be more valued by our HC.

I’ve always thought that defense “travels better “ but I don’t have any stats to back that up , lol .

If UK were looking for a coach tomorrow, he would be my choice. Great recruiter, great motivator, spark plug from the word go.
Sumrall vs Brad White . Who you got ? Is it more important to have experience running the total program in a smaller venue or running a high level defense in the best conference not in the nfl ? Hard to say for me . When it’s that close I’d have to go with the one that can do best at recruiting I guess. I’m thinking I’d have to go by who had the best interview and see their “plan”.

I don't have the stats either but it would make sense to me. Less communication, at least audible communication with the defense and the opposing crowd is typically quiet when they are on the field.

Stoops has changed things. I didn't think UK could get enough good players to win with Defense as the Priority, of course, I didn't think we would get a Coach smart enough to hire a Coach from Ohio that could recruit Ohio I remember Curry's first radio show he said he was going to recruit from Ky. North but all his Coaches were from Ky. South be like Pitino recruiting Richie they didn't even speak the same language so he didn't do very good at getting players from Ohio. We all know it takes both to win the way we want. Go big Blue.

UK has enough offense. They are 5-2 solely due to a hurt QB ( South Carolina) and special teams miscues (Ole Miss)
