I thought this was a good list (sorry, think you have to be a subscriber to post) so I will quickly summarize

Nathaniel Hackett (40) OC for Packers (Paul Hackett's son)
Mike Kafka (33) QB coach for KC Chiefs (Played at Northwestern)
Mike McDaniel (37) run game coordinator for SF 49ers
Nick Sirianni (39) OC for Ind Colts
Shane Waldron (41) passing game coordinator for Rams

Looks like a real nice place to start, if you ask me.

Never thought about Hackett but the Packers run the type of Offense that Stoops has said he wants. Pretty sure that's LaFleur's offense but Hackett has good experience as an OC.

Why would two NFL OCs from playoff teams go to Kentucky to be a college OC?

Maybe they aspire to be a college head coach someday. Plus, college and NFL pay similarly for coordinators, although the top teams do pay much more than college.

Could any of the listed above recruit? While the on-field requirements would be similar, a lot of differences as far as off-field: recruiting, limited practice time, keeping kids eligible, etc. Don't know any of their backgrounds WRT these items. We saw what a great hire Charlie Weis was at ND.

Nothing is foolproof, but the guy Orgeron hired at LSU (Brady?) won them a NC and a Heisman, and is now back in the pros.

The guy JP brought up was a college OC and QB coach before the Lions. Also, there would be two other spots to fill with recruiters if that isn't one of his strengths.

Would be nice to see him go after a guy with NFL experience. Wouldn’t be surprised if he did since he’s been doing that with his recent DC hires

Are there any statistics on how many college coaches and/or coordinators came to the college game from the NFL. It would seem that there are differences in coaching at these two different levels, but I'm not sure that is a negative. Personally, I would rather have someone in here from the college game.

I've heard of coaches leaving college for the glory of the NFL and no recruiting pressure/requirements.

Could easily imagine that the reverse is also true and that the NFL gets stale and that the pressure of an NFL gig and the business mentality can get boring. Plus, maybe some folks want to be a part of that recruiting process. Or, like has been said, maybe they want to set themselves up for college HC positions.

College is infinitely more spirited than the NFL. Maybe that's a draw to some folks.

Hell, Brooks was NFL before he came to Kentucky. Asking why is a valid question, but I don't think these moves are as ridiculous a proposition as it may first appear.

Unlikely? Absolutely.

The NFL coach name I keep hearing is Tanner Engstrand.

He was just hired by the Lions in late October 2020. I guess money talks, but it would seem odd timing-wise. Curious as to where you're hearing this.

I like Tanner Engstrand. Ran the offense at University of San Diego before moving to Detroit as an Offensive Assistant.
Ran an offense we can get behind. Set lots of school records on offense. High completion %, pass efficeincey, yards, and TDs. With all that, still averaged over 150 yards rushing per game with time of possession over 33 minutes. Should make Stoops happy.

Some local government officials (In Detroit) are campaigning for Robert Saleh, I'm sure there is more behind that than just his coaching ability but he would be a great hire IMO. Him and LaFleur cut their teeth together in coaching.

I'm with you, sounds like a good hire if that's how Stoops goes. I like that he seems good at developing a quarterback as well.

Would Matthew Smith have played for him at SD or was that SD St? Smith is still on the UK staff as a GA.

Couple people tried to come up with reasons. But I'm not aware of it actually happening. Especially to a program like Kentucky. If you want to get in the college game, you go to a higher profile school so you are at the head of the list for head coaching jobs.

That’s the only reason I’m not completely sold on hiring an nfl guy . If successful the nfl would come calling every year .

Both are coordinators in name only. GB and Indy coaches are calling the offense. They were both OC before.

I still agree with you that this list is very optimistic. Most people in the NFL want to stay in the NFL. It would be a huge coup to get a few of the guys on this list.

I love the idea of hiring a nfl coach. I think pro coaches in all sports are just better

I'm good with OC or DC from the pro ranks, odds are they are very good coaches. Position coaches, I prefer someone from the college ranks, mainly because of their recruiting. Can't have enough great recruiters in my opinion.

Here's an article discussing some NFL options...

Kind of centers around duplicating what LSU did with Joe Brady...who came one year, won a championship, then left.

We need someone who knows how to run an offense. Someone who grew up playing Madden.

I feel like they work twice as hard in college with recruiting. Maybe not...idk. Not sure Gran ever recruited anyone to UK.

Matt House talked about moving to the NFL to compete at the highest level, and also because off-season recruiting was a full-time job of its own. NFL position coaches usually make great money with no recruiting duties. .
