John Clay this AM listed 5 NFL assistants as potential candidates for OC

I love the idea of hiring a nfl coach. I think pro coaches in all sports are just better
I agree, mostly. Except when it comes to offense. I'd hope we look around in the lower divisions. The truly innovative stuff comes from there. Even high school. Coaches who are doing mad scientist stuff and big schools are afraid to try. Like Mumme or Leach or Malzahn or Briles. Someone out there is using two quarterbacks, never punts, and always runs flee flickers, and I would not be against giving it a go.

I just read the article on ESPN the other day. He and Belichek are buddies, great minds I guess. Don't like Belichek because of the rule bending but no disputing his innovations. I also agree there are some good football minds that come from the lower divisions.

Matt House talked about moving to the NFL to compete at the highest level, and also because off-season recruiting was a full-time job of its own. NFL position coaches usually make great money with no recruiting duties. .
Yea, hard to blame him. Same amount of money to work half the time!

Some local government officials (In Detroit) are campaigning for Robert Saleh, I'm sure there is more behind that than just his coaching ability but he would be a great hire IMO. Him and LaFleur cut their teeth together in coaching.
Saleh is going to be a hot NFL HC candidate after the season and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him take Mike McDaniel as his OC. McDaniel will also be a hot NFL Head coaching candidate himself in a few years. I doubt he has an interest in a college OC job.

Bill...no matter who he hires, the HC will need to change his philosophy...
Alabama coach Nick Saban has finally relented, albeit reluctantly. He said college football has officially become an offensive game. "It used to be that good defense beats good offense. Good defense doesn't beat good offense anymore," Saban told ESPN on Friday.

From what I've read about successful coaches in the NFL, it's not half the time. I think it's the same 70+ hour weeks but it's all coaching, all the time. As you said, no recruiting. But, I'm guess Tomlin, Belichek, et al all work 7 days a week 10+ hours. IIRC, one of the big knocks against Spurrier when he coached Washington was that he didn't work nearly hard enough like his peers did.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear on that one. I meant the Detroit Lions. I found it odd that the local government people got involved but I agree with them, he will be a great HC IMO. Another one of those youngish innovative guys.

The article I read

Rule bending is innovation. Look at all the WR picks that go on now. Look at OT's that get away with lining up in the backfield to not get beat by outside rushers. I mean Drake Jackson lines up at C with the ball between his feet vs. behind the ball, and then pushes the ball out in front of him a length or more before snapping, thus gaining that much ground each play before we even start.

The only flaw I could find on Gran was that his only experience was at an upper tier conference team. He seemed to perform well here unless it was against teams with superior talent. You have to scheme to have a punchers chance against the better teams in the SEC if you are at Kentucky .

I could be wrong but seems like I recall someone pointing out the list of Florida recruits over the past few years has not panned out very well
Yup...guys like Akeem Hayes, BJ Alexander, Bryce Oliver, Scalzo, the big TE that played with Scalzo. About the only kid that Gran might have been involved recruiting that has panned to a degree is Jordan Wright at LBer. I am not sure Gran's South Florida ties have done nothing but put guys on the roster that were not difference makers.

Maybe. But the question was whether or not he recruited anyone. Hinshaw recruited noone. Gran is a respected recruiter in south florida

Pretty odd to that our wr coaches haven't been at least competent recruiters. I think Johnson had a rep for being a pretty good recruiter. I guess none have been here long enough to make a mark.

You know that is a good point and as I compiled the list the thought crossed my mind why the WR coach isn't more involved in recruiting this position as usuallly your WR coach is more of a main recruiter vs. O Coordinator.

My thoughts too. Some Coordinators are good recruiters but usually it's the position coaches doing the heavy lifting.

I'm intrigued by mention elsewhere of Ken Dorsey (NC winning QB at the U) now 8 years into career as NFL assistant, currently QB coach to Josh Allen & Co. in Buffalo. If you are going to take a chance on a riser, I like him. Surely he would play well in South Florida as a recruiter. I suppose old loyalty might make it a tough gig to sell him. Stoops was at the U in the same period as Dorsey... I dunno, but I'm sure he's ready to call plays.

Hayes will do well with someone smart enough to get the ball in his hands!!

I've been assured that Bouknight is a fantastic coach. I'm sure he'll get us all straightened out.

Hardly here long enough to unpack let alone build relationships with potential recruits. Undoubtedly a reason our wr recruiting is so terrible.

We absolutely must get some continuity there.
