Jasper Johnson talking his official to UK this weekend

Good information I guess. I used to get super excited with the thought of a great prospect coming to UK. Can't get up the gumption in this area any longer. Cal deflated a lot of the excitement I had about UK recruiting. At some point this great recruiting needs to produce for UK, not for Cal, not for the recruit, for UK. With Cal at the helm, all it seems to be is good photo-ops for ...recruiting...

I sure wish I was stupidly wrong...

always nice to land the top guys, especially if they are from Kentucky, but like you said, these top recruits need to win a lot of games for UK & the fans.
Should be a good crowd for him to visit. Just hope the out come is better this week

Mentioned that he could reclass to 24. Hate it that he is going to visit Auburn for our game. Pearl will have his players so jacked for us. Hopefully our D has improved by then.

Hope you aren't quite as sick as you let on

With UK swinging and missing on Edgcombe, Ian Jackson, and Tre Johnson, getting Jasper Johnson to reclass is almost a necessity at this point.

Boogie Fland ain't gonna cut it in the backcourt if he's the lone high-level guard recruit. He's going to need help.

Well, look at it like this, it is better to get excited about the elite kids coming , and hoping for a chance to win. As opposed to not getting any elite talent and KNOWING we have no shot to win. I choose to keep getting the talent from high school, couple of nice portal guys, and having a chance.

This team still has a chance, I won’t give up on them yet!

If Shep doesn’t come back, it really doesn’t matter. We won’t be contenders. Heck, we will be lucky to make the NIT.

I would rather have experience and strength. Tired of these teams with 5th year seniors abusing our little skinny high schoolers.

In Fland's game against Montverde, they thought so much of him that they double teamed him.

Wow, good judgment on a team that isn't even complete by far. No portal guys as it's way too early, no idea on who might be back and still recruiting players. Yet, you can forsee how bad we will be next year??

Need to hit the portal hard for some stud guard depending on who comes back, hopefully Sheppard at least.

Oh Joy. A "Top Recruit" "interested" in UK. Color me underwhelmed and only interested in actual results, if and when that may ever happen. Compare him to John Wall or AD and I might listen.

There won’t be a portal guy out there that’s going to come in and LEAD us to #9. Just don’t see it happening. That’s something only a guy like Sheppard can bring to the table.

I respect your opinion, if you disagree, but I can’t see Cal building a champion with portal players.

Johnson brings in needed shooting if will commit
He would be a good get. Better than Knox, IMHO.

Put him and Fland in the backcourt with Sheppard and we should have a really good backcourt. Especially shooting wise. Johnson can shoot it. Fland is a pretty good shooter. And we know how well Shep shoots the ball.

If he grew up in Ky but was a fan of UNC- he won’t commit here imo.

LOL, people are already bitching and moaning, and we do not even know what the make up of the team will be. Say Theiro, Shep, Onyenso, Burk, Z all come back, mix it with the recruiting class that is NOT even finished yet. Land a stud portal guy, and you have a solid team mixed with veteran players, role players, elite portal guy, and stud freshmen. At least wait to see what we have next year to bitch about next year. Not saying all those guys come back, but they COULD.

Yeap. Of those that I listed, NONE of them are guaranteed to leave and ALL would benefit greatly with a second year to work on weaknesses. Especially Onyenso and Z. Onyenso because the NBA is not exactly a place where Andre Drummond type centers command a spot on the roster. He has to develop a mid range (12-15 foot) jumper and get better with his feet and hands. And in Z's case, he has missed so much time, he is just like Onyenso last year, pretty much a free couple of months to get acclimated with the college game and be ready for a complete year to prepare / work on weaknesses next year.

Ugo could put himself in a position like Nick Richards where he really blossomed as a junior and was ready for the NBA.

Agree. And what did Nick improve ? The little 15 foot jumper on the pick and pop. Now to be fair, Richards is a lot more athletic and has better hands and foot work than Onyenso, which is why I said he needs to improve on those things. He will never have the athleticism Richards has, that can't be taught. So he has to be really solid in all of the other areas of his game. His margin of error is smaller, he doesn't have the quickness and switch ability Richards did / does. He has to turn into a solid, more consistent rim protector, rebounding, force in the middle, with just enough offense to keep the defense honest. He will never get to the NBA off of his offensive game, his defense and rebounding will be his ticket, but he has to get better / more consistent.

This is what I've been trying to say but you did a much better job. We have no idea who might come back at this point and what our roster will be until complete. That's a ways off and we have posters already dumping on next year's team. No one knows for sure what our final roster for next year will look like.

Remember before this year started ? We had like 6 players ? Now it wasn't from planning how we ended up there (Reeves debating on staying or going), and other things. All we had was the stud freshman class. Then in a matter of days, we landed Burks, Mitchell, and then later adding Z. I say all of that to simply get people to be PATIENT, let it ALL play out. We get some, not even all guys back, land a solid portal guy, maybe 2, and sign a couple more kids (Knox) and Jasper (have him reclassify), and we will be solid. It does no good to start thinking about NEXT year, we haven't finished this years chapter, a lot can and will happen. I still believe in this teams potential, nobody has shown they are a lock to win it all. Hell, even locks don't win it all. When was the last time you looked at the tournament before it started and said (it is over, X team will win), and it actually happen ? That is what makes march madness so great, you DO NOT know. You think you do, then upsets happen. FAU last year went to the Final 4, Miami also. Who had those 2 before it started ? This team is bad on defense (no other way to put it), but man can they put the ball in the hoop. just tighten up the defense SOME, they will not be stoppers, and continue to score, we will have as good of a chance as anyone. UCONN is solid, but even they are beatable. A whole lot better teams than UCONN have lost in the past (UNLV, Duke, UK, Phi Slamma Jamma) just to name a few.
