Wouldn't break my heart if Coen determined the run game just isn't efficient enough so he calls Leary pass plays 60% of the time

Coen has the 3 games to play with and that would be a great time to let Leary throw more than run play's... So a 60% might be a good place to start the season with... Send the signal to the SEC team's that UK has a good passing game also... Then hit them with Davis and UK's running game...

As said, Davis appears to have the size (5' 10, 216lbs) & skillset to get some tough yards, so what he brings to the table is at least somewhat comparable to CROD and Benny.

IIRC, Wilcox has the homerun threat ability but isn't tiny either. In fact, his size/skillset/background could be similar to Boom Williams. With that in mind, it would awesome if those two compliment one another and combine to give the UK offense a run game similar to 2016.

I'm not even saying they will equal the production, but consider the passing game threat with Leary and this group of WRs, the possibility is certainly there for the taking.

Well, that's strange.

I heard Coach White say he had some help coming in at inside linebacker that could provide much needed depth at that position if they could learn the system fast enough.
Did he specify who? I'm sure all the coaches feel that way with a lot of players coming in. I just think you're overreacting.

So, you think asking the status of an incoming freshman is overreacting?

Wow. OK. Sorry. Didn't mean to trigger you by asking a football question on the football board.

My bad.

Hey there!Yeah, if these two can complement each other well, it would be awesome to see the UK offense have a run game reminiscent of 2016.
And you're right, with Leary at quarterback and the group of wide receivers we have, the passing game threat is definitely there. So, the possibility for a dynamic offense that combines both the run and pass game is certainly there for the taking. Just can t wait to see how these guys perform on the field.

Don't think I've heard his name mentioned by anyone all spring. No coaches, no teammates, no media guys, no fans who watched the open practice. Probably not a great sign.
Coen mentioned him in his last presser. Said he would practice one day and miss the next 5 or 6 days of practice due to injury.

I'll see if I can find the exact quote and post it here. I think this is the presser. Go to 6:30 mark if you don't want to hear the entire presser.

Very interesting. Soooo glad Coen is back.

What concerns me a bit is the depth in the running back room. In past years I recall us starting the season with 5 healthy backs only to see depth becoming an issue as the season progresses. Here we have 2 health experience backs, assuming they both make it through the rest of the spring and fall camp. Beyond that you have a guy coming back form a serious injury in Jefferson, another guy that is injury prone in Wright and a true Freshmen. That's not exactly ideal.

True and reasonable, as far as it goes. But there is no reason to think Ramon Jefferson will not be physically ready by August. Reportedly, his rehab is on schedule.

Since before he signed, I have been an enthusiastic fan of Wilcox, and I believe he will contribute in 2023.

But although you didn't specifically mention it, Davis also has an injury history. Of course, power 5 football is very demanding that way.

I really think CMS will look hard in the Portal for a serviceable experienced bigger power back to run between the tackles.

I don't see that happening. Could be wrong. Right now, we only have two open scholarships on our 2023 roster. If players leave, that number could increase. But there are obvious needs, like OL, ILB, QB. We could probably use another WR or DB more than we need another RB. Ray Davis was one of only four 1,000 yard rushers in the SEC in 2022. There is no reason to believe Ramon Jefferson won't be ready in the fall, and Wilcox is an early contributor IMO. I believe our fans tend to underestimate McClain. There may not be another Benny Snell in there yet, but our RB room is fine as long as our OL does their jobs.

I don't see any way we don't lose 3-5 players to the Portal after spring practice.

I could be wrong also, but listening to CMS he alludes to the fact some will be leaving in May.

Have you heard if Kendrick Gilbert is still coming? I haven't heard him mentioned since he signed in February.

A timely subject. You might turn out to be right. But no UK players have left yet this spring. Maybe it is coming, since it often happens at this time of year. If players leave, that would increase the number of new players Coach Stoops could take from the portal next month.

But I looked at the portal yesterday, and the uncommitted players available at this time do not match up with our roster needs. Specific to your comment, there is not currently an uncommitted RB in the portal that Stoops would take. Of course, that could change in the weeks ahead.

In any case, I would guess Stoops' highest priorities for May transfers are likely to be-

OL
ILB
QB
DB

We obviously need another OL and an ILB. Our coaches have already spoken about this. None of the reserve QBs established himself as Leary's backup, so it would be tempting to take a younger, high upside QB with multiple years of eligibility. In reading analyses of spring practice, our defensive secondary is not settled beyond the question of the starting safeties. We have three starting-caliber safeties, but no experienced safety depth after those three because Tisdale is gone. Andru Phillips had a solid spring but they aren't sure whether he is an outside CB or a nickel. The other CBs are still competing for jobs. Although inexperienced, JQ Hardaway and Max Hairston look promising. But Jantzen Dunn's experiment as a CB did not go very well. Alex Afari's position is still not established but he is probably a nickel. So they could still use a lockdown CB and some safety depth (similar to taking transfers Kelvin Joseph in 2019 and Zion Childress last year).

We might need another WR. We might need another placekicker. Our coaches will have to assess that.

There have been some rumors that LaVell Wright might transfer. I hate to mention it because I have no idea whether there is any truth to this. Often, these rumors are without a basis. But if a RB leaves, then I could envision trying to get another RB out of the portal. Otherwise, I think RB would be pretty far down the priority list. Davis, Jefferson, McClain, Wright, and Wilcox comprise a loaded room. All five are on schedule to be healthy by next August. You could lose two of them to injuries and still be three-deep with solid RBs, not to mention PWO Isaac Dixon who is not exactly chopped liver. Dee Beckwith is primarily a receiver, but he showed this spring that he can play a little RB in a pinch.

It's always better to have one more at every position. But we only use one RB at a time in the offense, and there is an 85 scholarship limit. This is my reasoning, and I could be wrong. If a RB leaves the team this spring, that could change the calculation. JMO.

Yes, you're the one who started a thread asking about an incoming freshmen who has yet to graduate high school as if it were some big red flag.

WTH???
You are a Drama Queen. Asking a question is not raising "some big red flag".

I guess I need to check with you before I post a question about an incoming recruit. My bad.

Just let it go, man. I just asked a simple question.

How YOU PERCEIVED THAT QUESTION is on you. I can't fix you.

Have a nice day. And, take your meds. I have already taken mine.

And just use the ignore button if my posts gets you this upset. My post was not intended to stir up controversy......but here you are..

There is a prompt symbol at the upper right of the webpage for private conversations. Check it out.
Lol. Really don't think a private conversation will help this situation, but thanks for letting me know.

I generally do my best to avoid conversations with people like that. They never resolve anything.

Not sure what he wants from me, but obviously I have been unable to bring him the right "rock".

Yeah, I also think we’re good at RB and am really high on Jefferson. I honestly believe he was on his way to having a great season but of course was cut short with the injury. He’s had some time to recover and has even more to get in fantastic shape for this upcoming season. If 100%, I look for him to give us around 7-800 yards and Davis going for 1000 plus. Now if Wilcox or someone else goes off some numbers may change a little but that’s a great problem to have. Really excited about this group of guys and don’t think we’re very far off from doing big things this season. Two or three upgrades out of the portal could make a big difference.

Boom had sprinter speed with sub 11 sec speed in 100m. Wilcox is not close to that in terms of sheer speed.

He was definitely quick. However I remember him being ran down big time by a vandy guy and iirc we ended up losing that game by a TD or less. I couldn't believe he was ran down from that far back, but he was.

Sprinter speed is important for safeties, edge LBs, WRs, and kick returners. For a RB, sprinter speed only comes into play if the RB cuts back or shoots through a gap and gets loose at the 3rd level of the defense, where he then has an opportunity to extend the play by outrunning safeties and CBs. FAR more important for RBs- twitch, quickness, vision, balance, and cutback ability. Wilcox has great twitch, balance, and quickness. There is no question that Boom was fast, but he also had excellent twitch and cutback ability. You are understating Wilcox's speed, too, but I don't expect a GA fan to say nice things about a GA hs football player who signs with another SEC program. I know GA didn't officially offer Wilcox but, respectfully, I also know how you think. And that's fine.

I don't think anyway. I still attend state track meets, I have watched Boom and JW live at their perspective meets. They are not built alike, Boom was much faster and quicker. JW has a different skill set, it worse, just different.I saw both respective 100m times ran on the same surface with legal wind. One was 10.94, the other was 12.01. That translates to about 12 yards. Why would I have anything to say about a GA kid who decided to go out of state when UGA didn't recruit him? There is only about 140 D1 kids a year who do just that, some we recruit, some we dont. UGA went all in on Justin Haynes, a legacy and instate kid, who went out of state

It's all good. You post frequently here on the UK board, but always about GA. The threads here are about UK football, because this is a UK football board. You turn the threads into GA discussions. No worries. At least you are literate and knowledgeable. But this is not the first time you have turned around a thread to point out questionable limitations for a player who signed with us. Don't say you haven't. That's okay. I understand how GA fans think. My niece and nephew attend GA, and one of our neighbors in Georgetown is a GA grad.

And BTW, if Wilcox ran a 12.01, he would not be competing in the GA state track meet. Hell, I used to run under 12.2 when I was in hs. That doesn't get you into the runoffs in the KY state meet, so it doesn't in GA either. Know what? I think you got the 12.01 off the internet. Wilcox ran 12.01 on March 16 at the Allatoona JV Home Meet, but that happened right after he ran in the 4x100 relay. This info is accessible if you google Jamarion Wilcox 100 meters. The reason Wilcox is built as you described is because he was a finalist for the GA 6A 182# wrestling championship. He was training as a wrestler, and still ran 12.01 at the Allatoona meet. If he had trained as a sprinter, he would have run a faster 100 meters, I guarantee that. Wilcox won't be training as a wrestler here at UK. He is plenty fast. Both Wilcox and Boom are/were short, quick-twitch, explosive cutback runners. That's the comp. FWIW.
