Jamal Murray says he will play the 1 position. link inside

thanks for the link
great interview, i love that he said that he is a 1 but is fine wherever Cal plays him

ULIS is the best point guard as he was last year...let's not lose sight of that...I'm sure all three of those guys will play the point at some juncture but ULISMYMAN is the man

It is my opinion that all 3 guards will initiate the offense, at different times during the game. If you absolutely have to have a basket, Murray could be a real nightmare for a 3 to keep from the basket, if he breaks him down from the top of the key.

Here begins the Ulis-Murray argument. No worries as far as I can see. Just glad Murray is a Cat.

I think Ulis will obviously run the 1, but I think we'll see every guard initiate an offense a various times in the game. Ulis and Briscoe both have the ability to break their man down off the dribble, Ulis is probably more dangerous to watch for when it comes to his passing and 3 point shooting ability, plus his ability to penetrate the lane and hit floaters and mid-range jumpers. Briscoe is terrific at creating shots, using is ball handling to get his man off balance, then using his big body to shield the ball on the way to the basket. Also has a nasty little step-back jumper, mostly effective at mid-range. Murray is a sharpshooter that is terrific at slashing. Doesn't have the ball handling ability of the other two, but passes about as well as Briscoe (which is pretty well), and has more scoring ability. Still a tight ball handler though.
Overall, very dangerous, very versatile backcourt.

My Favorite part of the interview posted by preacher Tom is when they interviewed his father Roger Murray and he said he knew Jamal was going to do something special with a basketball when he was 2 years old and he was given a basketball and he still has that photograph.

DDMO. Dribble Drive MOTION Offense.

MOTION offense. This means everyone is moving to different spots. Sometimes Ulis will have the ball as the "1" with Briscoe and Murray on the wing. If nothing develops, he passes off to one of them and rotates to the "2" or "3" spot. That's a MOTION offense.

Ulis will likely bring the ball up the floor and initiate the offense, run the set plays (which we probably won't have many of those), etc.

When Briscoe or Murray secure a rebound on the defensive end, they will bring it up and initiate the offense.

On defense, Ulis guards the other team's PG most of the time. Briscoe probably guards the best scorer on the perimeter (whether it be Selden for KU at SG or Jackson for UNC at the SF), and Murray guards the SG or SF.

It is not an issue unless one wants the ball all the time and makes bad decisions with it. Then Cal will put them on the bench and put in Matthews or Mulder or Lee (slide Poythress to the 3).

I am a little concerned about having three potential "Alpha Dogs" on the team. Briscoe is definitely an "Alpha" and Murray seems to be one as well. This is Ulis' team according to Cal, so he wants him to lead, so the old "too many chiefs..." adage could play out.

Cal is the master of team management, so I am not worried. As long as we are free of serious, season ending injuries, then we have an excellent shot at the Final Four and a title.

I think Ulis will be the primary 1, but the other two WILL get shots to run the offense. They have to for their NBA stock. Ulis is going to have to be ready to become an outside shooting threat on many possessions. I think he'll do great, as evidenced by his 42% clip last year.

Ask Eric Bledsoe and Russel Westbrook how it worked out playing combo guard in college and transitioning into a full time legit point guard in the NBA. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Ulis ain't playin 40 min.. Briscoe and Murray will play the 1 at times..

All you guys apparently have forgotten that most teams will ZONE us. Personally, I think MULDER will be more valuable than Murray.

On paper, I trust Murray against a zone more than Mulder. He's supposedly an elite shooter.

I don't know how many teams will zone us if we have Ulis, Briscoe, and Murray on the floor most of the time. Ulis is a returning 43% shooter from 3. Briscoe has won a 3-point contest, so he's no slouch, and Murray is supposedly a great shooter. If those three are all averaging around 40% from 3, most teams will have to think twice about zoning us. And if Mulder is as good as advertised, then there's another weapon.

Having those four should make it tough for defenses to "pick their poison." Do you zone and let good shooters launch 3's or play man-to-man and let guys just penetrate at will?

It's all good for us, IMHO.

If teams zone Kentucky this year it will most likely result in lots of easy buckets. Let the zone collapse on any guard and another is slicing down the lane...double him...baseline lob to Poy, Lee or Skal. Ulis shoots good enough to keep folks honest, he's already proved that at almost 43 percent from 3. This team will be tough to zone IMHO. All 3 guards have a combination of handles/vision/scoring instincts...cats are gonna eat no doubt lol.

I don't think it is a coincidence that Cal starting preaching his new mantra of positionless players so close to the JM announcement. I think all three of these guys can co-exist because they bring different elements to the court. Ulis is a pass first PG and has the uncanny ability of raising everyone's game around him. Briscoe is a converted shooting guard which should have no problem sliding to the 2. Murray is bigger than both of those guys and is the easiest of the three to move around IMO.

I think the three guard lineup benefits Briscoe and Murray the most. Both will likely see a rise in their draft stock because they will hopefully show the ability to score and defend multiple perimeter positions. It'll probably take some getting used to for all three players but I cant wait to see the combinations!

When foul trouble rears its ugly head, we may also see some four guard lineup.

Those that are obsessed with height might cringe at this, but Briscoe is 6'4, 220 with a 6'8 wingspan. He is strong, long, and athletic. He could guard a 4 at times, for short periods. And imagine the mismatches on offense with Briscoe at the 4 spot. Also, remember that Winslow wasn't much bigger (6'4.5, 225) and played the 4 for Duke this past season. Also, Connaughton for ND did pretty well against our huge frontline at 6'5, 215.

Zone is terrible idea against Kentucky next year.

Ulis is proven three point shooter, and you have probably 3 more legit 3 point shooters in Briscoe, Murray, and Mulder.

That's ignoring the fact that Skal can probably knock down good mid range shot.

Man, this team is going to be FUN to watch!!!

Murray is great from the outside. He was killing it from deep in the Hoops summit, shot 43% from behind the arc.

Murray will lead our team in 3 pointers made next year, willing to wager retirement on that.

What's great is any of the three can pull up at the three line and pop one so it doesn't matter who is at the point.

From what we know, that would be surprising but in basketball you present your case on the floor not in the media.

Depends upon the zone look and the personnel in the zone defense along with their experience going zone. Ole Miss going zone for instance is silly, but Baylor's zone is a different story.

You must not have seen Murray play. Mulder is a good spot up shooter with some other tools that can be developed, and I am glad he is a Cat. Murray is 1 of the most dominant high school players I saw last year. Murray is by far the better player, which does not mean that Mulder won't be a good player too. Signing Mulder helped. But signing Murray changes our team. Murray reminds me of Brad Beal, except Murray has a better burst to the rim.

In the DDMO, there really is no "1". Every perimeter player has the chance to handle the ball. I think having these 3 guys will result in a lot of lobs for Skal and Poy.

You may as well get used to it. A lot of teams will have to play zone against us because they won't be able to handle Labissiere on the low block in man to man. You mentioned that Labissiere is a good midrange shooter, which is true but it won't be the way Calipari uses him. This time last year, a lot of posters were talking about playing Towns as a 3. But that didn't happen. Calipari will develop Labissiere as a 5 and use him to score and rebound on the low block. Most teams will be forced to play zone against Kentucky because Murray and Briscoe will have a very easy time penetrating into the lane against man to man. If our perimeter shooters force them out of the zone, so be it. But most teams just won't be able to beat us, and will have to pick their poison. If they zone us and if our shooters have a cold night, then they have a chance for the upset. But if they play us man to man, they would be playing right into what Murray, Briscoe, and Labissiere do best.

I'm just wondering if you have ever actually watched Murray play? He is going to be one of the top guards in the entire country. With him joining our team, it took us from sweet 16 type of good to final four bound. Don't get me wrong, i'm glad Moulder is a cat. He will be great coming off the bench, adding 3 point shooting to our team. Murray is just on another level talent.

Labissiere will be used like Anthony Davis, not Karl-Anthony Towns.

With the guards we have, it makes no sense to post Labissiere up every possession.

We will see him post up at times, but like Davis, he won't need to be fed the ball in the post to get his points.

This.

Coach Cal posted KAT because he was physically more dominant than most players. No reason for him to move out so much when he can shoot insanely high clip from the paint.

Skal won't be able to bang inside like KAT, he might be able to shoot over him. However, i see him being utilize very similar to AD. He will shoot some in the paint, but he'll so shoot some mid range. Obviously put back dunks, and alley ops will be common as well.

It really gets to me when we get these supposed fans to come on here last 2 days and try to stir up trouble that Briscoe and now Ulis not to happy and Ulis will transfer. I am sure that Coach Cal sat down with both Ulis ad Briscoe and went over his intentions and how he would play the 3 guards next year. I would love to see the 3 guard lineup when we all know all three can shoot the 3 and we have Mulder that shoots 46% and also have Matthews that was a good outside shooter and 3 point shooter last year. This will be a fun and exciting team that will play dribble drive motion to perfection with Ulis at the point. We already know Coach Cal has told Tyler Ulis this is his team and he will play 30-35minutes a game. With Coach Cal going back to a 7-8 rotation all 3 of these talented guards can get 30 minutes. This team size looks like last years Duke team with Jones 6'1, Cook 6'2, Winslow 6'6, Jefferson 6'8, and Okafor 6'11. Kentucky could have Ulis 5'11, Brisoe 6'4, Murray 6'5, Poy 6'8 and Skai 6'11 with Lee 6'9, Mulder 6'5, and Matthews 6'6 coming off the bench! This will be a Fun team to watch and a team that will excel in Coach Cal's dribble drive motion offense.

Preacher Tom, you might have made a mistake, or you listened to that Video wrong... He said he would be playing his natural position as a one, but Cal could move him to the two spot... He said where ever Cal wanted to put him is alright... A preacher's job is to preach the whole word, not just the part you want to highlight... Of course you might not have any hidden motives, but I don't see how you missed that....
