It's time for the UK Athletics Admin to switch from Nike to Under Armour

Converse or K Swiss is the way to go.

Oops. Well I am still wearing converse high tops and low quarters. Just a loyal fan till the end. I have wore converse since the early 50s and see no reason to change at my advanced age. If it works, don't fix it. Just sayin.

not a terrible thought. under armour is surging big time. especially with the future generations. right now...their biggest school they are associated with is maryland because that is where they were headquartered. IF UK were to sign with them...we would be their flagship school and have first dibbs at all under armour prospects. nike is and will always be elite...but the top tier talent is being spread around the circuits more each year.

The biggest brand associated with UA in college athletics is Notre Dame Football.

Under Armour has passed Nike in apperal, but I agree, there is no way I would trust my feet to them. Their shoes are Sketcher level right now. If they can get that area locked up then watch out Nike. And for all you old folks, there shirts, shorts, and polos are way better than Nike right now, so don't start babbling about that crap.

Since you don't even know the difference between "there" and "their", your opinion means jack squat.

Nike kills everybody in everything.

Just some info to show the OP is crazy.

"According to a Sterne Agee report, Under Armour has also grabbed Adidas’ spot as the second-largest sporting brand in the United States. But despite this new rank and a predicted revenue growth of 20% each year for the next five, Under Armour finds its total annual revenue to be the equivalent of Nike’s advertising budget."

Under Armour does make some nice apparel. Not sure if it's better than Nike though since I don't own any other than a hat and a pair of cold weather gloves. And those gloves are terrible, the cheap pair of $5 gloves i got at Walmart blow the UA gloves out of the water. Hat is pretty nice though, the design leaves a bit to be desired but that's the fault of the campus store, not UA. Other than that all my name-brand gear is all Nike, 99% of which I got for free.

I don't buy much Nike/UA/Adidas stuff because it just costs too damn much. I don't make much money so I have to prioritize, and paying $30-40+ for a polo shirt, for example, is just fiscally irresponsible. I refuse to pay the Nike/UA/Adidas "tax" and will only buy if they are discounted over 50%.

Luckily for the last 3 or 4 years one of the coaches I work with has bought me one of the pairs of shoes the team gets, so I have a healthy supply of Nike shoes though. Have quite a few Nike polo shirts from work as well, like all of them but two because I just don't really like the material much.

Other than that, I'm going to Walmart, Target, Old Navy, etc. and getting some decent looking stuff on the cheap. Don't sleep on the Ben Hogan or Russell brand products Walmart sells, stuff is nice looking (well some of it is) and good quality. Gotten several polos and shorts from those brands and they are still looking good after several years of wear.

The fact that Nike is responding so vigorously to Under Armour means that they see the threat potential.

Not no but he'll no. Nike elite is where we want to be.

It's no offense to anyone, but only on this board do you see this nonsense. "Should we go ACC? Should we go Adidas? Now this.

Only here do some want to give up what MOST want, for what little desire.

is this about how a t shirt or shoes look? or something else? you realize nike is no longer the only place where elite kids go right?

folks can put their heads in the sand all they want. under armour is trending big time and not going away. i know for some its hard to be progressive, but open your eyes a bit and at least look at it. not saying uk should do it....but there is a case to be made for it.

Not really about looks but under armor isn't bad. Their designs are getting old (to me) but I see it a lot. Kids like under armor and they're definitely growing but there's zero chance I should consider UK switching or that UK would even entertain the idea. Nike Elite is the destination for our lifetime. It's the Gold standard. I could be just as progressive about the new KIA but in not trading in my Lexus.

People can keep their heads in the sand about a lot of things, like possibly leaving the SEC or switching to under armour, as if that's even possibilities.

I'm not downgrading UA they're a fantastic brand. But it ain't happenin and probably shouldn't.

Completely wrong and terrible take.

I mean the amount of inaccuracy in this post is startling, and it's somewhat hard for me to fathom that anyone ACTUALLY believes that.

But hey, I guess this is why we have insane asylums.

My own humble opinion is that UA now is doing what Starter did in the early 90s. Sinking all their capital into marketing in hopes of turning a mediocre 20 year old brand into something so in tune with a new generation that they can take on the big boys. Didn't work all that great for Starter. They never went belly up but never broke out of their caste either. Guess we'll see if UA does better.

(Note I'm saying the brand is mediocre not the gear. UA makes nice stuff but then so did Starter. Nike actually makes some fairly crappy stuff for the money but their brand is killer.)

I'll pass as well. I don't know much about UA as a business entity except their products seem unduly expensive to me. Much of Nike's stuff isn't exactly cheap, but UA is over the top in that regard IMO which is why I've refused to buy any of their products. Which makes me wonder if switching wouldn't also end up costing UK a rather large sum of money.

Horrible take. Starter and UA aren't even comparable. UA is #2, they have passed Adidas, Reebok, etc. They are here to stay. They make good products and good gear. But they aren't in Nikes league yet. Go back and read the articles I posted. Nike has grown in popularity among teens the last couple years.

Nike has 60% of the show market. UA has 3!

The school I work at was talking a potential deal to become an Under Armour school. We would pay for everything since we're D3 but all the shoes and apparel the teams bought would have to be Under Armour brand if they produced it and it met all safety and NCAA requirements. When our coaches caught wind of that, a bunch of teams all of a sudden "needed" new Nike uniforms because nearly all the kids want the Nike stuff, not Adidas, Under Armour, or other sport specific brands. Pretty much says it all right there.

Not necessarily.

Big business is always looking to squash the competition in its smaller forms. Nike is about the bottom line, and the less Adidas/UA/whatever the better for them. But I'm sure in this case they see formidable competition.

Under Armour isn't going anywhere anytime soon. But they also won't be as big of a factor as Nike in most of our lifetimes. That I would guarantee. As far as UK actually giving up Nike Elite? It's not going to happen and it would also be widely unpopular if they did. Most people prefer Nike > UA

its not about the fans and what they prefer....you do get that...right?

Well of course I get that. Fans have about ziltch to do with it.

Nike treats us like kings and is widely popular. There's no reason to justify.

sure there is. there is always a better deal to be made. if UA came to UK and said...we will double what nike pays you guys and you will get first pick of all UA recruits for the next 10 years....there is your justification.

the decision to switch would have zero to do with the quality of products.

When Under Armour has their high school camp on TV it might become a consideration. Hell, let's start talking about when they actually have one. They are a football product right now plain and simple. I get it, Northeast guy standing up for the Northeast product but get real. Nike and basketball will remain synonymous with each other for at least the next 30 years. Thank Air Jordan and now Lebron for that. Under Armour could never match the contract UK is getting with Nike.

This has nothing to do with anything but Money money money and Nike brings that to the table

you mean like the UA all-american football game: http://www.underarmourgame.com/

or the UA elite 24 for basketball: http://www.uaassociation.com/page/show/1452946-elite-24
