It's time for Reed to start..

My devil's advocate is Reed DID start the second half against Miami. Were you paying attention to what happened? Did it mess up some kind of magic juju that he didn't come off the bench in the second half? Or did we put our foot on their throat and go up nearly 30 in a matter of minutes? I understand both sides but thought it was worth bringing up
Our best half of basketball this season. Stretched the lead from 5 to nearly 30. Seems like his starting the second half was the best thing that happened to the team all year.

I don't think I have. Reed doesn't seem to care he isn't starting. Why mess with what is working? I personally don't care either way but Cal is sadly infamous for messing with lineups and screwing up chemistry.

It's working. Don't screw with it. Team over individual for once.
It worked against Miami, in large part because Reed started the second half. It did not work against Kansas.

This is where I'm at as well. Let the other team settle into a rhythm, then bring Dillingham and Sheppard in with the change up, get em right back on their heels.
Agreed. Sort of a tag-team version of "thunder and lightning" from the 90's.

Only a coach that is a d*** fool would split up Reed and Rob Dillingham.

Their chemistry playing together is off the charts right now. To separate their time on the floor would be insane and detrimental to the whole team.

Just sit back and enjoy the ride.

I am more concerned with the chemistry of the team when Bradshaw comes back and how Cal tries to utilize him in this lineup.

I think if you start Reed you gotta start Dilly as well. They are playing great off the bench together. I’m in the boat of if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. As long as they get their minutes I’m fine with it.
You understand that we had a 5 point lead at the half and broke the game wide open, playing our best half of basketball on the season - with Reed starting the second half, right?

It does matter but at the same time if it ain't broke don't fix it
It is broke. Like Wagner’s jumper. Reed starts and plays a lot more than 16 minutes against Kansas and we’re undefeated.

Shep starting the second half is what sealed the emphatic win over Miami.

This is not hard.

You have absolutely no way to know that. Had Rob not gone under on two screens we probably win as well.

Shep took a wild ass hero shot that screwed us on a possession too. Everyone made mistakes in that game that led to us losing. It is what it is.

Reed is fine with his position and playing time. You should be too.

Cals giving him more and more leash and has him in at crunch time when it matters. The Kansas game was too early for Cal to trust him based on his absurd preconceived notions of who is and isn't his guy. We all know it. It probably did cost us that Kansas game.

I wouldn’t start him. You don’t want to create animosity or a potential of that. Team culture is more important than who plays the first 3 minutes of the game.
The only reason there would be animosity is if the player he started in place of was selfish.

Is that the case?

You're doing Wagner a GROSS disservice by assuming he has low character.

Has Sheppard earned the starting job?

Case closed.

The real point is it doesn't matter. We were on fire Tuesday. We might try the exact same thing again tomorrow and it not work. Every game is different. We are great when Reed is on the court. With DJ and Edwards getting better, we're good when he's not as well. Don't screw with what is currently working. When it stops working, re-evalutate.
It only "stops working" when Reed isn't in the game.

Stop making stuff up, every game HASN'T been different. Every game Reed leads the team in +-. Indeed, don't screw with what is currently working, and what is currently working is Reed causes us to win easily when he's in the game. No other coach would bench his best player except for Cal, and we all know why he's doing it. So please, tell us a logical, rational reason why you wouldn't want to START OUT playing well against any opponent.

Can we make this or at least 1 of the 100 other threads like it “THE OFFICIAL REED SHEPPARD SHOULD START THREAD” so I don’t have to sift thru 400 more during the year.
You left off some zeroes in your absurd exaggeration post.

IMO, you should start your best five players that mesh together. That would mean starting Dillingham and Sheppard and Reeves and Mitchell and flipping a coin between Thiero and Edwards(not considering Bradshaw yet).

I’d keep it the way it is, would only be an issue if you didn’t have Reed and Rob in at crunch time towards the end of the game. Going to be hard to keep Wagner off the court at the end of games too he can drive to the basket at will. It’s a good problem to have we don’t have this issue last few years!

Yeah, I mean his 16 minutes against Kansas off the bench is what enabled us to get that victory. Oh, wait.
That's on Cal's dumbassery.

Pulling Dillingham when he was red hot and playing Reed 16 minutes cost us the game.

And everyone knows why he was doing it.

Cal will be Cal on bad substitutions at the wrong time in the game and allocate minutes based on his agenda even if it costs us a few games.

And he will do that whether Reed starts or comes off the bench. Some things you just have to accept if you are a UK basketball fan.

I'm of the mind that we keep it as it is. Off the bench in the first 5 minutes. We have Bradshaw coming back soon, so I'm afraid if we turn too many knobs, the flow will be disrupted. One change at a time - today, Bradshaw off the bench around 12 minute mark. Keep everything else the same.

THANK GOD Reed started today...I mean we are only down 13-4..... imagine how bad it would be if were just coming in the game off the bench at this point 😬😬😬🙄😂😂😂
Bingo.

I’ve heard for weeks how we wouldn’t get off to slow starts if we let Reed start.

Turns out, DJ isn’t the sole reason for the slow starts.

You guys always speak in the absolutes when projecting.

“If Cal gave Reed more minutes vs Kansas, we would have won.” But Reed came back in late and made mistakes. You don’t know how we would have fared if Reed played 30 minutes. You just think you do.

“If only Reed could start, we wouldn’t get in these early holes.” Welp. Here we are. Reed starting. We’re in an early hole.

Actually Reed is having one of his worst efforts as a wildcat today...taken several really bad shots, a couple of lazy turnovers, and has been no factor at all on defense.

Still love the kid, one of my favorites in a while....but this whole beating of the drum that "he must start" has been annoying. He helps the team by his effort and shooting.....whether he starts or not is pointless. But he's been more effective off the bench than as a starter.

GREAT call that this team doesn’t need DJ!
