Is Stephen Johnson the best QB in the SEC?

I just added SJs 2 TDs rushing and his 100 yds rushing to his fine stats.

SJ has accounted for 1,040 total yds and 9 TDs in 5 games!
Only one pick too!

I think he is the best QB in the SEC!

He's top 3-5, but Shae Patterson is the best QB in the SEC, and I'm not sure it's close.

Jarrett Stidham is who I would consider that best. Running 70% right now. Shea Patterson is a good one as well. Jalen Hurts is up there too.

SJ is top 5. But not the best.

He does a good job and has all the intangibles, arm strength may be a little bit of a question but he makes good throws and good decisions most of the time.

Let's not go overboard here,he is pretty damn good for a kid that was brought here as an insurance policy just to have a warm body to fill out the QB position on a depleted roster.

I'm with this. He's tough as nails and fights every game. He's a winner for sure. I think he has weaknesses and limits that will keep him from making a paycheck someday but he overachieves almost every game. If he had good coaches his stats and won-lost record would be even better.

4th or 5th, depending on what you think about Shurmur. Would be great if he could stay on his feet versus Directional State U.

No. But he is doing a great job at QB for UK.

He is #8 in SEC in QBR, #7 in YPG, #3 in completion % and #10 in YPA.

FWIW I have long thought YPA is best single statistical indicator of "how effective" is your passing game (game, not QB). Cats (Johnson) YPA is 7.9 a bit above the national median of 7.4 YPA.

Peace

No. Kwilt Cmon. You cannot possibly think everything UK football is #1 in the country....all the time.

I don't know that he's the best QB in the SEC. But then again, I don't think SJ's been given the same level of opportunities to be more then he is now. The QB's ahead of SJ are those that the QB is the focal point of a given offense. I think we all can agree, the QB is not the focal point of the Kentucky Offense? The Kentucky Offensive focal point is in the RB position. Almost to a fault.

Does anyone know where I can purchase a 3X
Kentucky #15 jersey blue or white?

My wife is trying to fined one for my B Day but 2X is the biggest.

Thanks BBN

W/o question Johnson is better than
- UT
- UGA...sorry but that kid is game managing
- Florida
- Mizzou...he's gaudy stats vs. scrubs and awful vs. legit teams
- A/M
- Arkansas..
- LSU

So the argument boils down to
- UK....put his rushing and passing together...9 TDs vs. 1 pick
- USC....good stats but 4 picks
- Vandy...good passer/stats..but he was awful vs. Bama but really solid vs. UF
- Miss St...tons of rush/pass yards...but 5 picks
- Ole Miss...Tons of yards but also leads SEC in picks

I'd argue we have the best QB given his stats and his team is winning (right now) moreso than Patterson and Bentley who have better stats but teams aren't winning and they have alot more TOs.

The SEC is not a QB haven this season. Talent wise, Fitzgerald, Hurts, and Patterson are more talented, but considering our pathetic OL play, he is probably playing the best right now !

I think Stephen Johnson is perhaps the best STORY in college football. No he doesn't have an NFL arm, nor an NFL build. He was not big enough, or strong enough for any FBS program to give him a sniff coming out of high school. But what he does have is the intangible qualities of pose and decision making to take what god-given talent he does have and become one of the top quarterbacks in the best college football conference in America. Stephen is a classic roll model for every kid that was every told the were too small, too slow, not talented enough etc., to just believe in yourself and keep working hard every day of your life until you finally achieve your goals.

Grateful and proud to have Stephen as our QB every day of the year. :)

Yeah, the simple truth about Stephen Johnson is that his "whole" is greater than the sum of his parts.

There are many subjective arguments that can be made, but the objective numbers he is posting indicate he is an elite collegiate QB.

Unless our offensive line improves, his "parts" might have to be screwed back together to make a "whole."

Shae had a great game last week against Bama 14/29 165 with 2 INTs.. nice 7 QBR.. but that was against the Bama defense

Well, Jalen Hurts is 5th in the SEC in rushing, and Fitzgerald is 11th. Stephen is 38th. He's definitely one of the top 5 or 6 QB's in the league based on early games.

Love this kid!! Wish Gran would turn him loose all the time. We'd be 5-0 right now. Kid is a winner and I think could make a steady paycheck with the right team next year. Not a star but clearly a winner.

Got to stand up for Fromm here, he has done everything asked of him by the coaches, if they need him to hit some passes, against State he was 9 for 9 the first half with a TD, Against UT Sat receivers were covered in the redzone and he pulls down and runs in untouched, runs the read option, keeps and runs it in untouched. With the rushing attack we have and the defense we are putting on the field, what more is expected of him? He isn't the best qb in the conference, but he is the offensive leader, the team respects him even as a true frosh. .When teams have stacked the LOS with 8 men within 5 yards he has forced them to change things up. He is , 2nd rated in the conference, one of the highest YPA in the conference and completing nearly 60% of his passes 8TDs 2 INT, 2 rushing TDs and sacked 4 times. I don't think he is the best in the conference, but he is top 5

Alabama may have the best two QBs in the league with Hurts and Tagovailoa.

Johnson is pretty darn near ideal for what's asked of him.

Hurts not even top 5 in SEC, he just has a lot of talent around him. Take him off Alabama's team and you would see how pedestrian he is. Tagovailoa is still unproven but he may be one of the best when its all said and done.
Johnson has exceeded my expectations and i am glad i was wrong on that one.

I think if we ran the power I with Hart at FB/TE and Conrad at TE occasionally everyone's stats would be better. Make them prepare for run, slip Hart out toward the sideline on a Route. Slip him out of the game, slip Bowden in. Quick snap, post Route. I feel like we have the tools for a more creative offense.

He's not the best but he's definitely Top 5.

If he had an Offensive Line, those numbers would skyrocket.
To be sure, SJ and our entire offense would be more productive if our offensive line was playing better. And if our offensive line improves during the latter half of this season, our offense will play better. SJ is nowhere near as good as the top quarterbacks in the SEC. He doesn't have Stidham's, Hurt's, Locke's, or Mond's size and skills. But SJ is the best UK quarterback since Woodson, and he is still getting better. He has only been on campus for 21 months, and has only started 15 games here. His improvement since last October has been very impressive.

So you'd put Fromm in the mix of:

Patterson
Schumer
Fitzgerald
Bentley
S Johnson
Allen for Arkansas

Jaylen Hurts is the other wildcard playng for Bama...

Absolutely, only 1 stat really matters for a qb, putting up W's. Patterson and Bentley are going to put up huge numbers because they can't run the ball or play defense and usually playing from behind. Fitzgerald isn't a good passer at all, heck of a runner but is more of a TE than qb. can't throw into a small window at all/ I haven't watch Schumer very much this year so I don't know about him, Allen is regressing. Johnson's best attribute is putting up W's as well, Hurts has improved his passing some, but he was the reason Bama was beaten in the SEC championship game last year, couldn't throw downfield at all, everything was lateral. Now he did throw a couple, but didn't provide enough risk to back the defense off at all.

Unfortunately I think you are right, and if he gets injured for our game you have another five star with experience on the bench.

Eason has the biggest arm, probably one of the bigger arms in the NCAA this year, but I don't think he has the poise and confidence Fromm does, I think the kids call it swag. Now Fromm isn't a runner on Johnson's level but he is capable of picking up yards on the read option or pulling it down and picking up a few yards, Eason can't do that.

If so, Grumpy, since his insertion, Steven Johnson, Jr. would rank only second to Jalen Hurts at Alabama in that category.

We are very fortunate to have SJ.
