Interesting analytics reflecting the value of Reed

DJ hurts the team because he doesn't really do much with assists, and when he does drive he regularly misses or just hopes someone will rebound (or is blocked).

Edwards...my goodness. Where to begin. There shouldn't be one UK fan that believes he's actually helping our team. Hell, he's not even helping himself.
As per DJ, in the SEC:
Wagner is NINTH on UK in Offensive Rating (points scored for team or points produced for players per 100 possessions). Shepherd is THIRD.

Wagner is NINTH on UK in Defensive Rating (points allowed per 100-possessions). Shepherd is SECOND.

There are only TWO rotational players on UK that have negative numbers in SEC play (Off Rating/ Def Rating), Edwards: -7.5 and Wagner: -11.3

I'll just add another area that hurts these 2 and that would be they both AVOID contact when driving to score. That means NO chance at a foul call when they miss in the paint either.

Neither one is even a mediocre passer either. DJ may be the WORST Guard in the Cal era at finding an open guy and getting the ball to them. Edwards isn't any better.

If Wagner had played all those games and Reed had missed them, we likely have a similar record.

Our worst performance all year was at USC, when Cal decided to bench Reed most of the second half.

To be at our best, we need both Reed and DJ playing, and at a high level. They complement one another.

I’ve held my tongue on this for quite a while, but just want to comment once.

I was ok with Cal bringing Reed and Rob off the bench for a bit. But there is absolutely no reason on Gods green earth that DJ and Edwards should not cone off the bench and Rob and Reed start. My 12 year old knows it. My neighbor lady who barely watches basketball knows it.

Cal is obviously living up to promises, and that is tanking our season. Cal is a bitch for that.
Cal's afraid that the Klutch pipeline will dry up if he doesn't start Wagner and Edwards.

Cal should be more worried that opposing recruiters will tell future recruits, "Hey did you see how Calipari started two g-leaguers over two lottery picks, because of stupid promises he made to agents? You sure you want to go to Kentucky?"

How many games have we LOST playing Klutch players over the last few seasons????!!!!!

How many championships has UK won with Klutch players?????!!!!!

So WHY does Cal continue to bow down to these guys????!!!

Heck, Lebron and Nike have actually pushed the top kids to Duke over Cal and UK for the last 8 years.

What benefit is Cal receiving by recruiting Klutch players???

I distinctly remember Cal spouting off after the 2013 season that he would NEVER be "Held hostage" by a player again when Ryan Harrow pulled his crap. I guess that has went out the window.

It is mind boggling!!! Cal has lost it!!

Cal's going on all in that 2025 class. He knows they have a ton of legit options there. Klutch will serve as a gatekeeper for the Dybantsa class.

I agree with your 3rd part. It may work to start Reed at the 2 next to wagner and move reeves to the 3. Reed is not a starting pg at this point though.
I’m going to throw you a bone. Reed’s best position is not pg. However, at times, he is our best option at point. Second half at Arkansas is a good example.

He was not as effective with someone like Zeigler in his grill vs. UT.

He is crafty, though, and does tend to figure out the best way to attack as the game progresses.

Kid is just a basketball player, who makes everyone on the court better for playing beside him.

He does make his share of defensive mistakes, but some of that is scheme. Cal realizes that our best bet is to let Reed freelance a bit.

But he is still a freshman who hasn’t necessarily figured out the right times to freelance, and when to play it straight. He will get better at this - just hope it’s while he’s still at UK.

Again, we need Reed, Rob, DJ, and Reeves all doing what they do best. It shouldn’t be seen as a much of a competition between those guys.

I agree with all of this. I just wish people would get over the whole Reed needs to take Dj's spot thing. That is the last thing this team needs. I would even be fine trying Dilly starting at pg, but it has to be someone that can consistently beat their man off the dribble to attack the paint area for layups or kickouts, but that isn't Reed right now.
It isn't DJ either. He is a HORRIBLE passer, maybe the worst passing PG of the Cal era. It really is puzzling how much he has struggled distributing the ball. Rob isn't much better and takes too many chances with too many difficult passes. It's a big reason Cal has HAD TO play Reed at the Point.

Reed does it more with hesitation dribbles - getting a feel for the opponent as the game progresses.

Perfect storm is having at least 2 if not all 3 of Rob/Reed/DJ on the floor together, attacking from different angles.

Throw in Reeves, who has Meeks/Monk/Murray levels of shot-making ability (guilty of tunnel vision at times but none are perfect) and I really don’t think you can stop this team.

Can we stop the opponent? We’ll see. I think what Reed said about being the aggressor is key. These guys need to dictate tempo and perpetually turn defense to offense.

And I couldn’t care less who is initiating on the offensive end, as long as they keep their heads up and share the ball.

I both love and hate that Reed gets all those minutes lately. We don't need him to be out of gas come tournament time, but the more he sits the more likely it is for UK to lose. Same goes with his shooting. The more he shoots the better odds Kentucky has at winning.

So, according to this, Reed is the 4th most impactful player in college basketball? Just assuming that because it doesn't show all 362 teams or so.

We are done by 2nd round regardless.

5.9 and 2.6. Very similar #s. Reed gets slightly more but has more TOs as a result. However, these are predominantly from Reed's time coming off the bench. When he starts, his numbers dip. He is also 1-4 as a starter compared to Wagner being 16-3. I want the 16-3 guy.
I don't get the thing using the team record as to who should be starting at PG. Reed is ahead in every statistical category by a lot. Reed is shooting over 50% from 2 and 3. DJ is 43% and 30%. Why wouldn't you start the best player?
Reed is leading the SEC in steals. Reed has 100 rebounds. He averages more assists. This is nuts.
You start your best player. There is reason why Reed is being projected as a lottery pick in the NBA draft. Most drafts have DJ as a second round pick. Im not bashing DJ but Ray Charles could see this one.
