NC State is the land grant university. It is one of the best land grants in the country. Because of that it has extension offices in every county. It’s the people’s school and a great one. UNCCH is an elitist school of national reputation. Duke is private and I would guess has a very low percentage of students FROM the state of NC. Both Duke and CH have a higher profile nationally because of more athletic success but NC State is North Carolina’s school.
UNC is a land grant university also…
And having lived in NC for a good bit and traveled the state a good bit and being a Duke grad — I think most of NC citizens bleed baby blue.
You’re right that NCSU is the agricultural college and has presence in all counties. It is a great school and provides more services to more communities in the great state of North Carolina. But there are just more Tar Heel fans. Period. Just like…
KU has more fans than KSU (the Ag school)
OU has more fans than OSU (the Ag school)
Michigan has more fans than MSU (the Ag school)
UVA has more fans than Va Tech (the Ag school)
Alabama has more fans than Auburn (the Ag school) this is the closest.
And even t.u. has more fans than A&M (the Ag school)
All public universities are land grant universities. The only universities that come to mind where the ag school is the most popular in the state are LSU and Kentucky.
I think more universities that have a veterinary program and an agriculture program have the county extension program offices. The schools have a persona of students from small towns that work hard and know how to wake up early and drive a stick shift. The other ones are mostly liberal and entitled that want to be women’s studies English teacher…
NCSU is no exception. I would hire a kid from State over UNC 9 times out of 10. But UNC is North Carolina’s school.
IMHO
