I've been reading some of the reactions to Malik Monk's signing with Kentucky today and these are some of the nastiest things and most negative comments I've seen. I mean, you'd think he joined ISIS or something. An Arkansas sportscaster told him he better move out of the state.

The sad thing is, he's got to play a basketball season around these people now. I think I might be fearful of some kind of attack from these people. They are serious and they hate this kid now.

So what is it with Arkansas fans? I remember the way they treated Archie Goodwin when he came to UK. When we went to Fayetteville that year, they booed him from the time he got off the bus. He grew up there and they treat him like a real enemy because he's going somewhere that can help him realize his dreams? I guess I'll never get it.

One thing is sure, if you're a great high school player in Arkansas, the best thing to do may be to just move out of that state.

The other issue here is that these fans are simply not realistic. Arkansas is not gonna win a title anytime soon. They have a good team about once every 10 years, if that. If he could have played with the guys they had last season, it might have made a difference, but next year the cupboard is bare. What do they expect of him? Just come languish in obscurity for a year and hope someone notices? Oh well. He's going to be treated terribly this season. I hate it for him. His high school should get security personnel to stay with him.

Kentucky fans are crazy but these Arkansas people are scary.

that's a dangerous situation for him to be in. Dudes are going to try and fight him I'm sure. He should've waited till April imo. I'd leave, transfer out

I live in the DFW Area and there are a ton of Arkansas fans here. Absolutely one of the worst fan bases in college basketball. They came into the SEC thinking they were going to dominate and got a rude awakening which makes them worse. Just can't stand the fact that they can't compete with UK in basketball.

Every fan base has rednecks. In 2013 UK 'fans' were threatening Cal's daughters on social media.

A part of me was hoping he'd wait to announce in the spring because of the lunatics in Arky.
I think that was the original plan but it seems he wanted to get the recruiting over with before the season. Arkansas fans are accusing him of milking the situation for all it was worth, but his committing now doesn't fit that narrative. If he wanted to continue to milk the situation, he would have let then keep thinking he's coming to Arkansas for as long as possible. But he didn't do that. They should respect him for being honest even though he knew he'd be facing some hard times.

One thing seems sure... when the season is over and it's time to leave, he'll probably be happy to be out of there. And that's the shame of it. A hometown, home grown talent like this basically being run out of town and hated over signing with another school.

Based on the ways they've treated Monk and Goodwin, I hope their basketball program continues to bleed to death. I don't care if their being down is bad for the SEC. These particular elements of their fan base is bad for humanity.

I wonder how the Arkansas fans will feel when Monk turns out to be a Max-deal NBA player in about five or six years.

Y'all are worried some dude's gonna come up and try to fight him? LMAO. Malik Monk is a 6'4 freak of nature athletically. Among the people who care down there. I doubt there's to many dumb asses from Arkansas that could take him. Monk would open a can of whoop as on some fools if they came up to him like that. He;s tough. He can handle himself

For the life of me I cannot imagine why they blame of a kid for picking the #1 college basketball program historically & currently, & shunned that crap of a program they have at Arkansas right now.

Get real!!

Elite recruits go to the Mississippi State, LSU, and UNLVs of the world, no one bats an eye. An Elite recruit chooses to commit to a program with 8 National Championships, the most wins of all time in their respective sport, and has produced 3 of the last 6 #1 picks in the NBA draft over Arkansas, then they must be cheating!!!

I thought for sure he'd hold off until Spring to avoid it - I'd probably flee that state now too.

Those idiots haven't been relevant going on 3 decades and are in deep denial.

That's a good point. But he shouldn't have to deal with even the threat of violence, and he clearly doesn't need to get into a bunch of fights. Red necks travel in packs down there, ya know?

I agree but I think his "love" or respect for Mike Anderson is the reason he pulled the trigger during the early period. This way, Arkansas knows he is not coming and can move on to look for another player. Had he waited and then bolted, the would be stuck with their thumbs up their arses. I think he at least respect Arkansas and their fans, maybe not after today, enough to let them know with plenty of time to find someone else.
The idiots that are bashing him are the minority. Just like every fan base, including ours, there are idiots in the crowd. The bigger the fan base, the more idiots you have and it's always the crazies you get on the Internet and go nuts. You have to think most of the Arkansas fans know that this is the best decision for his future.

And that Irwin guy would went nuts on the radio is a COMPLETE EFFIN IDIOT and should be fired for some of the comments he made. He is such a hypocrit. To actually say it would have been OK if he had committed to KU or Duke is just hilarious. Does he not realize that they both recruit the exact same player and Duke won the title last year with "1&D". So, it's OK to be "1&D" at Arkansas, Duke, or KU but not UK because we have too many? What? We win those recruiting battles and you dont, so we become the bad guy? Geez, I could go on and on about this idiot. I'd love to call in his radio show to have a nice discussion with him. I just might do that next time he is on. I know I wouldn't get anywhere with him but it would be great entertainment. Lol

Yeah Irwin went full retard today on the radio. Telling the kid to move out of the state? That's a threat in my book. It's irresponsible because it's inciting other idiots to do violence to a kid. I agree with you. He should face some kind of discipline from his bosses. As a sports journalist he should know better. He's revered in that state and people may take action based on what he has said.

Great point. Called him trash too. That's about as unprofessional as it gets right there. You are exactly right, telling a kid to move is a threat and that guy needs to be disciplined. I'm sure he won't be because I hear he is pretty much "the man" when it comes to Arky sports in the state. At least needs to voice an apology. Just completely classless act.

It's definitely a shame that Arkansas fans are acting like that. It just goes to show you how trashy the fan-base really is.

I don't get why adults (or whoever) go on these kids social media sites and say ANYTHING other than congratulations. It's appalling and embarrassing to see some of that stuff. I'm sure sane Arkansas fans (and the ones I know are great people) are as embarrassed as we were when some Kentucky fans went after Harris when he picked Alabama over Kentucky.

The hate that Coach Cal gets from opposing fans doesn't surprise me at all. Hell, THIS BOARD had a boatload of anti-Cal stuff back in his Memphis days. That's just the nature of the fan forum beast (LOL). But the direct criticism directed at high school boys is ridiculous. IMO, the veteran broadcaster in Arkansas that went on the air and blasted Monk then recommended that he MOVE from the state should be fired. There should be no place for that kind of blatant ignorance.

GBB!!!

Where can one read most of these tirades- Rivals or Scout? Does it require signing up for their premium board?

It's not just Arkansas. When Eli Manning didn't go to Ole Miss they went crazy. Note: Eli Manning never lived in Mississippi, he grew up and went to high school in New Orleans. But his father and older brother played at Ole Miss so they felt they had some kind of a claim on him..

Another note: Eli Manning is the all time leading passer at Ole Miss.
