this makes the fourth bad regular season in his 7 years at UK.

Cal has been awesome and I feel bad for whoever has to try to follow him.

But this'll be the third team of his at UK to go from number one to unranked in the same season.

That's only ever happened three other times in the history of basketball. Cal's now done it 3 times in 4 seasons.

We're going to have to clean house after this season, especially if we add Bolden to the team. I'd run off everyone who can't cut it - Lee, Humphries, Mulder, you name it.

People act like that Calipari will be totally impossible to try to replace... This is a university that has five different coaches. Once again five different coaches win national championships ...

Cal just missed on talent evaluation.... And when you replace 7 you can't have misses on Freshman...they must be ready to play. Skal & Matthews are major busts and Briscoe can't shoot.mCouple that with returnees who have major holes in there game you will struggle.

I will never bitch...went 11 years without a Final Four from Tubby.

This team has some serious flaws. Our best player can't really drive to the basket in crunch time because of his size. Our 2nd best driver can't make a free throw if he drives. Our best scorer is just wildly inconsistent. Our front court can not be counted on for really any scoring or protecting the rim. I have never seen a team with such a wide difference in their ceiling and floor.

Yes, true and all good points. Still is frustrating as hell....just mind boggling bad tonight.

Not sure I have ever seen anything like what happened from a UK team.

This team has never had a inside game this yr, that can block shots and make shots, it all depend on outside shots, but when you are up by 21 this team just quit playing defense , taking bad shots..This team is just not very good..

I love having Cal as our coach and would not replace him with anyone. But, his refusal to add a zone defense to the arsenal has probably cost us a title or two and a lot of games. I have no idea why he will not incorporate it into his system. I think we would've won the 2011 and 2015 titles had we played some switching defenses. It's a big weakness in his philosophy.

How do we really know if Humphreys or Mulder can't cut it. I think they did absolutely EVERYTHING they were asked to do tonight. Its time to give someone else a chance. Good god they can't do any worse than skal.

We've had three great teams and 4 not very good teams during Cals time.

Two of the bad teams got lucky and put together a run that masked what reality was, and the other was bad but had a convenient excuse with Noel that hides the fact that they weren't good with him either.

The book is still open for this teams ultimate finish and by all accounts next year should be one of the great ones.

I think the solution is clear.

Let's start another thread that reiterates the same thing 20 other threads are saying. When we do, we can offer no real quality assessments, some vague statement about regular season importance, and absolutely no framework of perspective as pertaining to losing 6 to 7 guys in the draft now on multiple occasions only to replace them by freshmen.

For a guy who loves Cal, you're sure painting a subjectively critical view of him.

There's two ways it could turn out if we replaced him, one is with someone close or at his coaching level, the other is someone who turns into BCG. People need to remember a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush.

I heard this in 2013....the twins were coming etc....close but no cigar...now this mess

Cal has made his living in the tournament. He's had some bad regular seasons here, but those teams ended up taking the sour taste out of our mouths with a NCAAT run. People were frustrated as hell with the 11,13, and 14 teams. However, two of those teams basically cleaned the slate by going on improbable runs. It's tough that two of our best regular season teams, 10 and 15 couldn't seal the deal. But so goes sports, especially in a one and done tournament.

I don't know, this is just the system Cal runs. If you depend on top rated freshman you'll get a mixed bag of results. I'm more disappointed our returners (Lee, Poy, Dom) haven't really developed since being here. Our bigs have been pretty bad that I wish pt was set aside for Humphries.

I'm just going stay off all things UK basketball tonight. This was a bad, bad loss.

Since winning the national title Cal is 21-17 in road games, 11-17 if you take out last year.

I think we should take out last year to promote the narrative of this thread; after all, you took out the Final Fours he's been to with two of those teams that were bad in the regular season when you squeezed in your narrow assessment.

No idea how anyone can argue Calnis better than K.

Especially after tonight

Are we talking OAD Era?

I'll make it easy on you. Coach K has advanced past the Sweet Sixteen 3 times in the last 11 years. After this year, it will be 3 times in 12 years for a 25% success rate of making it past the Sweet Sixteen.

Your narrative is flawed.

Is 2 national titles not better than 1?

So Billy Donovan is better than Izzo, Calipari, Self?

Again, K is the better career coach that Cal, but there is a case to be made for Cal being the greatest coach in the OAD Era, and it has a lot to do with the fact that he's been to at least the Elite Eight in eight of the last ten years.

You don't think that puts him in contention for greatest OAD Era Coach?

Did I tell you a few seasons ago if we screw around coach K would get credit for the innovation and success of the OAD? It's happened on ESPN as well.

A few different looks and hang around upperclassman scorers, like I was screaming, and it wouldn't have happened.

Cal blew it. But, even still, his results are still great.

When your coach is trying to push 5-6 people into the NBA every season, this is what happens. You can assemble a great team and have an awesome season. But then you lose pretty much all of your major contributors from those teams and have to start all from scratch. When you find yourself depending on a large number of freshman for success from year to year (as we do), it should come as no surprise that you have a great season followed by a crappy (by UK standards) season. There's just way too much turnover to sustain success. I literally despise what college basketball has become. A sport I once loved with all my heart is now something I may only watch a few times each season.

This is the 3rd really bad loss this year, this is feeling a lot like 2013.
