I assume you mean in reference to the University of Virginia. Hoos is short for Wahoos or Wahoowa. It comes from the baseball rivalry between UVa and Washington & Lee back in the 1890s. W&L fans called UVa fans a bunch of rowdy wahoos, which UVa adopted as a badge of honor.
