It just makes no sense from a practical standpoint. He has no history of getting kids to the NBA, he isn't a great coach, they will have no chance for a national title and they don't even have significant exposure there. Why on Gods green earth do you choose to play for Cuonzo Martin when you are a 5* with options to go to one of several elite programs.

It's California...

In all honesty, it's one of the great mysteries of the world as to why they haven't really been relevant in sports...

Stanford is pretty solid in a bunch of sports...USC, basketball is the one thing they haven't figured out...UCLA has titles in just about every sport...

The west coast schools should win everything and dominate every year in all sports...

I mean forget the big 4 out there...i'd sign with Loyola Marymount...or Cal Poly...or Santa Clara...or Pepperdine, check out that campus...

California is beautiful...the weather is some of the most pleasant in the world...not too hot, not too cool but just right...

there are things to do...places to go...

Our guys can go to Fayette mall...those guys can go to Hollywood, check out a Dodgers, Clippers, Lakers, Raiders, 49ers, or Giants game...or drive to the beach...

Isn't that beautiful, Pepperdine? I think tuition's about 50 grand a year...but hey it's Malibu.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't one of the other top recruits that Cal got a tight friend with Brown? Can't think of his name.

Rabb stayed home, whats so hard to understand? Brown wanted culture, which is great and all, now i hope he ends up in OKC, he will love that....

Except Cal is Northern California which is EXTREMELY different than Southern California. The weather, the population, the majority of the politics, the activities, scenery are night and day.

I'd play any of the Southern California teams, preferably Pepperdine or Long Beach State which are actually near beaches unlike USC and UCLA who have to drive 40 minutes for that.

UCLA campus is right across the street from Bel Air it's nice. Great scenery...

Sounds legit to me, nothing to see here. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to inventing false charges against... I mean "looking into things" regarding that Labissiere kid, as well as taping my guest appearance on Thunderbirds.

I like it. If we aren't going to get them, get out of dodge and go somewhere irrelevant.

What's the worst that could happen? Cal comes out of nowhere and wins one National Title? Better than Duke, UNC, UL, Kansas, etc.

I think you are wrong about Martin. He is a really good coach. Almost had UT in the elite 8 or final four last year. He had a good class coming in there until UT ran him off

I would bet most of us would agree that Cal is the most harmless of the other Brown options..Eff ku and unc, michigan fans showed their true colors before our final 8 game with them, complete dic#s...Martin will now without a doubt have to sack up and show what his coaching really is....

I understand staying at home, but these top level guys are making business decisions. Playing in what amounts to nowhere for an average coach at best, could cost them millions. Brown wants culture???? What would make sense is going to a program which can improve his skills and teach him the skills he will need off the court while in the NBA. A drop from 4th pick to 8th pick would cost a guy over 3.5M in just the first 3 years. It makes no sense. There is no advantage for either player to play at Cal for Martin, there is only risk.

Cal Berkeley is minutes from the murder capital of the west coast ,Oakland. I would discourage anyone from wandering off campus unless driving an M1 tank. UCLA has a beautiful and safer campus. He should have gone to Arizona, better Bball atmosphere and an excellent coach.

Yeah if you go looking for violence you can find it anywhere you want, Lexington too. Obviously homeboy liked Berkley and the Bay, we can debate it all day long(i take the Bay) it dosent matter.

I disagree on Cuonzo Martin too. I think he's a very good coach now and will only get better. Sean Miller has some new competition out there on the recruiting trail. Cal also looks to have a really good starting 5 next year too. If they get/have any kind of depth they'll be in the hunt for the Pac-12 title.

As a former resident if both NorCal and SoCal, I MUCH prefer the north. San Francisco is a much much better city than LA. LA is a sprawling suburb with little ir no city center. No comparison. Plus in the bay area you have Napa up the road, Lake Tahie, Yosemite, the redwoods, beautiful mountains, Heavenly Valley, Alpine Meadows. Berkeley is a nice campus as well and the Berkley hills is a very nice affluent area. LA is nasty in many areas. Nice along the beaches, Pasadena, Laguna, Orange County. But lots of pure run down trash in much of the region. No comparison. Check it out some time. its not what you see on TV.

exactly 83cat...Norcal blows away anywhere else and if you really are talking Norcal then that truly dosent even mean The Bay...

I bleed blue but honestly if I was a top recruit, I would go to Arizona. Good coach, lots of basketball support, never rains (well not during fall and spring semesters anyway), beautiful women on campus and a pool party with hot girls in bikinis almost every single night. I'm currently working there during the week and contemplated moving.

When you consider teams like UNLV, Miss St, Cal, etc being players....part of the sales pitch has to be come and be a"program changer" , same thing when Wall, Cousins, Bledsoe came here.

  • Cuonzo is not a bad coach. He got tired of the way he got treated at UT and went to work at Cal.
  • Oakland can't be much meaner than Atlanta (10 miles from Wheeler.)

100% Agree. I'm a NorCal resident. No way would I live in SoCal and to be honest, I really don't even like to drive through it.

I don't like L.A. but I do love where I live (Surf City USA) in OC. The people in this city are a lot different than the folks I lived around in the L.A./Valley area. I love the beach and being able to go see ball games, surf, travel within reason to do cool stuff, but most importantly the weather is just amazing. It rains maybe a handful of days a year. When I lived in Kentucky, the winters would bum me out so much.

NorCal is pretty cool. I was just up there for WrestleMania and that place should be considered a whole different state. So different.

I'll take a stab at it...

Some kids want a legacy, a monument to their greatness. If they know they are going to the NBA, college is just a train stop on the way.

In the "remember when" discussions that happen years later...Brown and 2015-16 will be the "good ole days" for all the Cal fans. At UK...it's hard for your candle to shine bright in a sea of bright candles. He'd be just another of many.

I think Brown didn't want to be a diamond surrounded by diamonds....he wanted to be the showcase diamond.

I didn't say he was a bad coach, I said he is an average coach and that is correct.

It's hard to get people to look in your showcase when there is no traffic.

California is beautiful as one poster alluded to. However, anyone that's serious about a basketball career doesn't go to Cal. There's nothing wrong with kids wanting a great education, but I have a feeling there's more to this $tory.

Not quite night & day. I would pick the San Francisco Bay Area any time over So Cal. Fantastic city!

Went to No Cal for wrestlemania?

I was talking fan legacy

It wouldn't matter where Brown plays....scouts will come, he will most likely be a lottery.

Yes, he will most likely be a lottery pick. The issue is whether he maximizes his position. That is a crap shoot with a mediocre program, average coach and average players on your team to compete against. It was a stupid business decision

Oh, and fan legacy at Cal? That may be an oxymoron.

He will coach them "down" for sure...but even the Oceanfront property in NORTHERN California is better than what's in Lexington or Ann Arbor LOL!

Brown probably figures that he is good enough all ready and scouts know his game that him going to some also-ran program wont make any difference. No way does Martin know how to handle studs let alone stud FR.

Went to No Cal for wrestlemania?

Yeah. I stayed in Palo Alto and traveled to San Francisco as well and then went to Santa Clara for the event. Then afterward made a week of going to Monterey and Big Sur. I had never been and it's beautiful.
