Hubbard

Cal needs to load up on LEGIT portal guys. The courts just basically made it the wild west in the portal/NIL landscape, so just start making offers and build a super team. I'd take a guy like Hubbard all day over another unproven top 25 recruit from HS next year.
Reynolds and Hubbard, we may not stop anybody again but we’re scoring 90 a game again

I rewatched the highlights and man did he hit some insanely tough shots. He is just a bucket getter and a baller. He is gonna get paid this offseason by state or somebody is gonna poach him in the portal. If he were to enter I wouldn’t be mad at all if Kentucky tried to get him

Hubbard is Mississippi's all-time scoring leader. He isn't going to leave State imo.

This year is an anomaly. You know as well as anyone that a good number of supposed hot shooters have come into Cal's system and flopped. Remember a guy named Booker? Herro? Heck, even Reeves last year had some major droughts.

We can go on and on about this with our own examples, but anecdotally I'd say 50% of supposed "shooters" that come into Cal's system don't show out as expected.

Booker and Herro?

Excuse me, but both those guys got drafted higher than their high school rankings. Way higher if you include foreign players and upperclassmen.

That didn't happen because they couldn't shoot at UK. Good lord.

This makes zero sense. Herro, Reeves, and Booker all shot outstanding while here. Same as Wiltjer, Miller, Lamb, Knight, and Murray. Some shooters shoot 2-10 one game and 6-10 the next, some go 4-10 every game, it's still 40%.

The issue with some of these is that they were the only guy on the team that could shoot like Reeves last year. Now we can spread it out. Dillingham and Reeves shot poorly from 3 last night, but Sheppard was on fire. We didn't notice Dillingham and Reeves because of Sheppard.

No doubt, he has been on a heater recently though. I think he is very much in the mold of jr smith & Lou Williams, where when he is on he is nuclear and when he is cold he is ice cold. I would still gladly take him at Uk if that opportunity ever opened up
yep he has put together 2 good games in a row
before the UK game i think he was shooting 37% from 3 which is about average

NOTE: The above is updated through only 25 games, so here are current percentages:
Sheppard: 51.7%
Dillingham: 44.5%
Reeves: 44.2%

Ivisic: 46.2%, although only 13 attempts
Burks: 40.0%, although only 5 attempts

Hubbard shot his wad vs. UK (I assume our guards lack of defensive skills are part of his great night)..

- 11-24 from FG and 7-14 from 3pt land.....and as mentioned some where just under intense contests by UK
- On the season...he's your typical SEC high shot volume and low efficiency chucker...39% FG and 36% 3pt..and not even close to 2 to 1 ass/to ratio....hardly gets rebounds, steals, etc... He has never hit 7 3pt shots all year...

But he's a Freshman...so he's got potential for sure...but he'll need to take a ton better shot selection to improve on those numbers. But at 5'10....he's never going to be a guy that can finish at the rim at his size...so he better work on that jumpshot is all I can say.

Peterson is option #1 and it isn't close.
If Cal somehow got Peterson and Johnson and Bradshaw returned, I could see him not going to the portal at all.

That was an insane shot.

People will say foul up 3 there but you can't foul there. He was forced into a ridiculous shot that he just happened to hit.

Heck if we tried to foul there it would not have shocked me if he made the 3 anyways and got an and one lol.
Too much time on clock to foul in that situation, regardless of any other scenario. What they SHOULD have done was denied the catch or run a second defender at him to make him give it up if he caught it.

It should be noted about Hubbard... yes, he was a bucket last night. He was shooting out of his mind and making shots leaning and fading away! He was 7-14 from 3 last night. He doesn't usually shoot it that well. He has shot 36% from 3pt range. He's really a volume shooter and a streaky shooter. He has shot Miss St OUT of as many games as he has shot them IN. If we just take last night as the norm, he would be player of the year in the SEC. He has shot 228 threes on the season and has now made 83, which is 36.4%. That's not very good. To be considered a good 3pt shooter, 40% is the threshold. He was there last night, but hasn't been there for the season. And his overall efficiency isn't good, either. A volume shooter- he has shot 357 times this season and made 139 for 38.9%. If we had a player who shot that much, we'd have him drawn and quartered.

For comparison's sake...
Antonio Reeves is 72-163 from 3 (44.2%) Overall: 196-391 (50.1%)
Reed Sheppard is 60-116 from 3 (51.7%) Overall: 120-223 (53.8%)
Rob Dillingham is 53-119 from 3 (44.5%) Overall: 144-298 (48.3%)

Get this- even DJ Wagner is better in overall efficiency: 91-224 (40.6%)

You missed my point. I wasn't talking about draft status. I was talking about sheer performance at UK after hype from recruiting.

People can cherry pick all they want, and so can I. In the end, we can all find examples of shooters or prospects that came in with high expectations but really didn't live up to them (some not even close), and others that came in and performed as expected.

As I said above, anecdotally I'd say this was about 50/50.

A 15 ppg scorer in a major conference having to be his teams main creator isn’t Kentucky material? He is a good player, who would work out here. If he isn’t Kentucky material who is?

Context for Hubbard also matters here as well. He wouldn’t get 20 shots every night here and most likely wouldn’t have to be the main creator here as well. So efficiency could go up while playing with better players.

Takes 13 shots to get 16 points. Im not going to sit and argue about a shot chucker and terrible defender being UK material. He's the kind of guy that helps UK be 9-16 or lose to St. Petes. If you are fine with that then so be it.

You foul up 3, before someone takes a 3-point shot! Plus, Miss State has several very poor free throw shooters so it would have been valuable to know which of those players it might be to foul them if they touch the ball. You take a time out. Then put Ugo and Z on each side and others of your own teams best rebounders on the free throw line to grab the miss.

It worked out nevertheless.
I think you foul up 3 with maybe 6 or 7 seconds left. If you foul with 12 - 15 seconds left and they make both free throws then you put a lot of pressure on your own team to make free throws. If you miss one, they have the ball for the last shot with a chance to win, not just tie. I think Cal played it the correct way based on the amount of time left.

He wouldn’t have to be the guy here, he could be supporting cast type of player. If you don’t like that’s fine, but I don’t know how anybody could watch his shot creation and ability to make tough shots and say he isn’t Kentucky material.

And he takes nearly 5 free throws a game as well to get those 16 points in 13 shots. If UK takes this type of player on again we are in dire need.

Like what?

Well for starters his turnover rate is extremely low at 9.1%.
His overall offensive rating on KP is 117.0.
He's an 83% free throw shooter and gets to the line often.

On Miss St, he's a volume shooter, a primary option for them. On UK, he wouldn't have to carry the load here. Evidence shows that when a person's usage goes down, their productivity and efficiency goes up. I mean we are giving mins to DJ Wagner here. Hubbard has been better than him.

I don't think anyone was intending he'd be a main guy here, just a piece.
