Okay, really starting to enjoy writing these stories with so many reflections, opinions and experiences from former players. The other day was the piece on David Jones, cornerback at Kentucky from 2005-2008.
Today, Dicky Lyons, Jr., is up. In the first minutes of our talk he reminded me that he can't get in trouble for saying things that will upset people now, since he's not on scholarship, and he sounded completely comfortable in sharing opinions that would surely not make everyone comfortable.
Among Lyons' takes: Rich Brooks' strengths as a coach were also among the factors that placed a limitation on the program when it had a window of opportunity in the 2000's, Kentucky made more program-shaping decisions during that time that were motivated more by fear than ambition. He's not a discontent, he stays in contact with former teammates and he follows the program closely, hoping they can still climb the mountain and buck history. But he knows it's hard job for any coach at Kentucky.
In that context Lyons explains what he thinks are the most important ingredients for success at Kentucky. And I gotta say, while we aren't parrots and probably do disagree at points, he makes some damn good sense.
