I said something like this a few months go - but people laughed - and they will again - because it is not going to happen! But here goes:
1. Hire a coach who loves Kentucky and wants to be here - one who values UK over money! Obvious who that Coach is to most on here.
2. Hire a coach who recognizes talent and can take that talent and turn it into a team. Good example: Mark Pope. Again obvious who we should hire.
3. Spend the projected next 10 years football budget on the next 2 years acquiring the best players from the portal!
4. Focus on portal players and only high school players who you can get who would make a difference. Maybe 5 or less per year.
Rational. If you can't build a really good team with the a coach who loves Kentucky and a $100 million budget in two years - it can't be done! Just look at Ole Miss and Indiana. It can be done! If you do this and you are successful - money will pour into the program to keep it going - the fans will accept paying more money for tickets - because they will have something to support and cheer about. Example: the average Tennessee football ticket holder is paying over a $1,000 per year per ticket more than the average UK ticket holder. Increase the contribution - 40,000 tickets at $1,000 more means another $40 million for football for year 3 - lol! If we aren't successful - then we can continue what we are doing now and pay coaches for what they are really worth! We can cut football payroll by $12 to $15 million a year and get what I believe we will be getting this year - lol! I'm sure we can get the best high school coach in Kentucky for $500K per year. Fill out a good staff for another $ 2million. You can hire a Hal Mumme type coach and fill the stadium and fans will have a blast - like we did before. Remember, what got Hal in trouble is now legal - lol!
