Haven’t posted in very long time…..have serious question for BBN…..

Great coaches all over campus eh?

So great they aren't winning sec championships or seriously competing for national titled anytime soon.

And people comparing coaching success for Oats at bama vs the players and resources he would have at UK is hilarious.
Mark Stoops isn’t winning SEC championships, far Mark Stoops. 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

We’re competing against states that produce 3 times as much talent as we do and we still hold our own. You know this but you’re desperate to hate and push negativity.

These threads always end up the same way with the same themes.

-anyone that is not filled with Cal hate realizes how shallow the potential coaching pool is
-there is no slam dunk replacement
-people will excuse anything (Oats handling of a murder that involved two of his players) if you win some games
-you appreciate that some of our fans are not the AD (seriously Pearl and Cronin)
-some will give no viable answers or answers at all and just say "Not Cal"
-it is clear that some fans are ABC fans (Anyone But Cal)
-the requirements put forth by this board for a coach are unreachable. This leads to my next point.
-posters on this board will be trying to run off whoever the new coach is probably 3 years in or less
-the more you look into it, the more clear it is that Cal is the right guy for the job

We’re to the point that we desperately need to move on from Cal even if it’s not for a slam dunk home run w/e hire though.

I don’t even think Oats takes the job if offered at this point. I’d take Scott Drew if no one else. It would at least be a step in the right direction.

Personally i’d take the guy from D2 that’s been absolutely domianating there the last 6 years and hope that it translates. There have been a lot of really good coaches come from outside of D1. Hurley and Oates went from high school to D1. Pearl went from D2 to D1. A few others too. And this guy is outperforming what Pearl did at that level by miles. And he’s only 41.

You won’t have to pay him a ton right off either because he’s coming from D2.

A louisville fan of all people was the one i first saw mention him on here and it’s actually a good idea given the lack of a slam dunk in the d1 ranks. Anyone you hire is taking a chance. But again, at this point sticking with Cal is worse. Unfortunately we don’t have a choice. Because no one is ponying up that buyout for at least another 2 years i’d guess.

And the number 1 overall seed and got bounced. Well playa if you criticize Cal for it, then do the same for Oats. He hasn't won jack shit. See what he does the next couple years and we will discuss again.

Surprised some haven't thrown out Eric Spoelstra as Cals replacement , lol.
He can recruit, hits the portal hard, and he wins games. Cal didn't win a title until he got to Kentucky either.

You are right that things could change and his program could go downhill and irrelevant from here, but I would bet a lot of money against that. It's simply not absurd right now to suggest that Oats would be a top tier replacement if it came to that within the next year or two

I think just about any coach who has had a winning record would be adequate to replace him now. One who appreciates the Ky tradition and its fans. One who could recruit from the portal. One who includes the boosters as was traditionally done and work with them developing NIL. One who works well with his boss, the AD. One who doesn't act as though the UK men basketball program is his little private club and its no one else's business how he runs it. And finally one who is a good in game coach. I think maybe half of the other SEC coaches would meet those standards which Cal has been failing the last 3 years.

For me, Muss, Pearl, Drew. The order changes, but any one of those realistic three, I'd be ok with.

I simply can't forgive how Oates handled the murder. I can handle Pearl type character flaws. I can't look past Oates'. Different level/level of slimmy.

Job would go to Drew if Barnhart gets to make the call. Hurley Oats and Vogel would be my choices

How many final fours and championship games Oats been to ? With ANY team. UMASS, of all places, Memphis , and UK. 3 DIFFERENT schools. That wasn't luck playa. So save the Cal didn't do shit until he got here.

There is no obvious answer.
1997 - Tubby was the obvious answer as we wanted to keep the Pitino pipeline in play. Donovan wasn't quite there yet as he had gone 18-9, 17-11 and 13-17 in his 3 seasons of head coaching experience.

2007 - the 2 obvious ones were Billy Donovan and John Calipari

2009 - Cal was the obvious answer

Personally...I've been saying for a couple of years, I'd go after Musselman. Has taken the Arkansas program to places it hadn't been since the mid 90's.
i guess this is what I’m getting at. There’s no obvious answer. There are some decent maybes, but there’s no one custom made for UK like a Cal or even a Pitino. It makes me nervous because we were at the point of anyone but tubby and ended up with Billy Clyde. Maybe Cal can find his winning ways again and this is all a moot point. I just want to be that gold standard again regardless of coach….

I guess this is what I’m getting at the most and what makes me most nervous. There are some good maybes, like Mussleman out there but no slam dunk. There isn’t anyone that’s custom made for this job like a Cal or even a Pitino. The last time we at a point of anyone but tubby and we ended up with Billy Clyde. I know where have been names thrown around but if it’s anyone but Cal I was just wondering what the next plan would be. Just makes me a little nervous. Maybe Cal will turn things around and all this is a moot point for a while. I just would like to see UK be the gold standard again regardless of coach.

It took Cal a while before he was dominant though. His first final four was in his 8th season.

And he didn’t make it back for his 2nd trip for another 8 seasons. His first 5 years at memphis he missed the tourney 3 times and didn’t make it out of the first weekend.

What is needed is a Larry Brown type of coach who gives you instant credibility. When Brown was hired at Kansas 3 years later a final four 5 years later a national championship.
