Has UK basketball ever had a Michigan punter moment?

One of the greatest moments like this was Game 5 1987 Eastern Conference Finals. Bird's shot is blocked. Detroit has ball and one point lead. Bird steals inbound after being on the floor to DJ and Celtics win.

No. And the examples being given really aren't all that close.

I think the basketball equivalent would be trying to inbound the ball, ahead by 3, with less than 3 seconds to play, then proceeding to throw the ball away, having the opponent hit a 3 pointer, and fouling him while he was shooting.

The closest I remember to that was when UK lost at UT in 93. UK fouled Allen Houston on purpose, ahead by 3, less than 10 seconds to play. Houston made the 1st, missed the second on purpose, UT got the rebound, scored, and was fouled. But I don't think even that is really similar to what happened to Michigan. The fluke element wasn't as high. You had 4 very unusual things happen with Michigan: You had the fumbled snap, you had the punter completely panic, when all he had to do was fall down on the ball, you had the ball go directly into the arms of a Michigan State player, and you had him return it for a TD in a situation where that was the only way Michigan State could win. I really can't remember anything like it, in any sport.

That UT game did inspire the biggest curb stomp I have ever seen in the SEC tourney that year in Rupp. We ran out to a 31-0 lead and won the game by more than 60.

The Sheray play and St. John's games are great examples.

Wasn't there a game where we were down 3 with the clock running out and Sean Woods dribbled in and shot a 2 at the buzzer?

I may be remembering that wrong - help me out.

You are right, I think it was at Miss State or Ole Miss.

You can only have this stuff happen in football. The only game therefore that comes to mind is the LSU game. Tipping an INT up in the air so a WR can catch it and go 60 for a TD is worse than what happened to Michigan.

I bet you couldn't convince a Michigan fan that it wasn't worse.

UK football has had 10 losses like that one. It's why I'll never understand anyone buying into the hype around UK football every year. We're one of like four major conference teams that haven't won 10 games since the 70s.

I think the bluegrass miracle game is the one that best symbolizes our football history. I'm afraid we may end up being forever remembered as the fan base that stormed the field, climbed the goalposts, set off the victory fireworks ....for a game that we LOST.

But, thankfully, our proud moments in basketball more than make up for the embarrassments in football.

Our football team has one or two every year, but I was trying to think if our basketball team has ever had a bonehead play that cost us a game against a rival like that play today. We've had a couple of close calls...DeMarcus almost cost us a game against Stanford in Cancun. Andrew almost blew the first Wisconsin Final Four game. We didn't foul in the Watford Indiana game.

Considering that Michigan State came in having won six of the last seven games, it would be like Louisville leading us by two with 10 seconds left, dribbling the ball off their leg, then giving up a three at the buzzer.

Close to this in basketball was a game during the SEC tournament against Mississippi State when Tubby was a direct cause of Sheray Thomas leaving the lane early as Jodie Meeks was shooting FTs to ice the game. Jodie made the first to put us up by three and was in the process of shooting a second free throw when Sheray left his spot (Tubby's direction) in the lane after Jodie had been handed the ball--the ball then went over to State. Adding insult to that gross coaching move and error by Sheray, on the ensuing possession, we let MSU's best player shoot a three (did not foul them to shoot two FTs up three) and they tied it to send the game into overtime. Ultimately, we lost and wrenched defeat from a sure victory. One of the worst endings to a UK basketball game in our history.

Don't limit it to Michigan football.[winking]

Michigan football has been snakebit twice. Remember the Kordell Stewart hail mary in 1994?

We have a winner
I was at that game. Major forehead slap. Still have the imprint.

I thought of something that was close, but didn't quite happen- Steelers/Colts, AFC Divisional playoff, January 2006.

Steeler's ahead 21-18, less than 2 minutes to play. Colts, having no choice, go for it on 4th down inside their own 10, turn the ball over, give it to the Steelers on the 2, with 1:27 left. By almost any measure, game over. Steelers hand the ball to Jerome Bettis, who hadn't fumbled all year. Bettis fumbles, and Indy safety Nick Harper grabs the ball on the bounce, and comes oh so close to scoring, stopped only by a desperation tackle by Ben Roethlisberger around midfield.

Had Harper actually completed that play and sent the Steelers home, it would have been close to what happened to Michigan, although even then, I don't think it would have been quite as bad.

I'm still not sure how that Colts guy didn't avoid Roethlisberger on that play. Roethlisberger was laying on the ground.
