Harry Giles.........

Cal didn't play Diallo, let him be a "mystery", and look at how high Diallo went in this draft.

I don't recall Diallo being predicted to go near the top of the draft. He already had a big weakness being a guard that couldn't shoot. Not playing isn't going to show them you fixed that weakness. I believe Giles at one time was the number 1 recruit (dropped to number 2) and predicted to go number 1 in the NBA Draft without playing a game at Duke. Maybe if he sat out all year and spent the whole year rehabbing, he might not have fallen so far in the Draft. It would have netted him a much larger pay day to put away for when his knees likely give out.

He has 2 strikes against him. Bad knees and he went to the kings where dreams die. He will never be what is expected of him. That said, if any indication of last yr at puke is his career it will be short lived like greg oden. He looked terrible last yr. I know he was behind, but he still looked bad. One more knee injury and he's done which is a shame

He would have been a top 5 pick if he didn't play a game in college and his medical s checked how. No different than Highschool kids who used to be able to go from H.S to college. Being a mystery if you're a top H.S prospect is a very good thing

Nope. No team was gonna draft a player top 5 coming off back to back torn acls who didn't play a game in college because his meds checked out. Not in this draft.

The point about Hami is he didn't help his stock immensely by sitting out. NBA teams saw him post about as impressive physical measurables as a 2 guard can possibly have and he still couldn't get a guarantee in the mid teens. For better or worse, teams wanted to see him play against college competition.

It's possible that Giles would have gone slightly higher, but not playing AT ALL for more than a full year is going to throw up just about as many red flags as playing sparsely throughout the season and looking bad/rusty.

People are acting like he would have been a top 5 lock if he'd just sat out the whole year. Not the case

lol

I guess Krzyzewski caused him to tear both his ACLs. Brilliant analysis [thumb2]

No, he didn't cause that. What he DID do was cause too much exposure knowing damn well the best thing for GILES to do was hide. Cal (most likely) would have been much better for Giles and I'm not sure how someone could argue it.

I will say it's not 100% on coach K. Everyone made the wrong decision there, from Giles to his parents to the advisor, coach K. Cal would have advised the opposite in that situation.

And, just for the record, I'm not in love with a players interest before the team, but I understand it when context is applied. We do right by them, they do right by us and Kentucky flourishes. Coach K should catch hell for the way he handled the entire situation, just like the pitiful way he handled tripper.

The game will be better when Duke loses it's founder and has to make it with a new vision. Indiana slipped, UCLA slipped, Duke?

Kentucky - 5 coaches to win titles.
Duke - 1

See ya on the other side. Good luck.

Well you can't say for sure playing wouldn't have hurt Diallo's stock. Maybe it hurts, maybe it would have helped. We'll never know.

Hami is coming back to improve on the first round. Sitting out probably guaranteed him millions though, which to me flies in the face of your comparison.

It's apples and golf balls anyway, Giles had an injury to protect.

Cal is a better advisor for NBA athletes than K. It's really not debatable of thought is applied. And I'm damn near positive Cal wouldn't have exposed Giles as much as K, and possibly could have advised Giles to not play at all, which proves to me what the best decision was. If my son has a busted body at 18, but is in Giles position, I'm listening to Cal.

Giles was over exposed by Duke when he should have been protected.

And if the family would have went against Calipari's advice, then who do you blame? From all published accounts it seems like Giles and his family were hell bent on playing last season, no matter what advice they got.

I said K is not fully to blame, but he IS the professional and advisor to the family for his NBA aspirations. Giles, his family, and K are all to blame. But if coach K had told his parents that their son could risk tons of money by being over exposed, you really think they would have turned against that advice? I dont think so.

K was clear when asked about Giles. He wants to play, and we want himto play. K helped push him to the court, he wasn't playing devils advocate.

Unless you want to believe that.

I said at the time, even when I didn't like the Diallo fiasco, his parents and Cal played that hand the best I've seen. From the responses in interviews, to sitting out, to hiding until he couldn't even during combine, that's how business is done.

That's what I recall as well. Hard to say where K falls into any "blame" for lack of a better word. My guess is that K would have probably known from practice observations that HG would not be very effective, and would been more inclined to not play him. Then convince him to come back for a second year, fully rehabbed and back to a sure fire lottery pick, etc. Selling point to parents would be that HG could get his sham Duke Sociology degree in that time, etc.

People can go on and on about whether it helped or hurt Hami to sit out, or whether Giles might have gone a little higher if he'd sat. The only ones that are flat out wrong are the people acting like Giles was a lock for a top 5 pick if he'd just sat out. That's just silly

Injuries suck, that's something I think we can all agree on whether you're cheering for the good guys in blue or the bad guys in blue. It's kind of amazing that he got drafted as high as he did after all of the medical stuff and his on court performance.

The Kings are gonna look like geniuses or incompetent morons. History suggests it will be the latter but I'm rooting for the guy (for Fox sake). I like the rest of their draft though.
