Not sure how true any of this is but Michigan is a team that worries me if they needed a new head coach

If Harbaugh thinks just making the CFP is “topping out” at Michigan then hopefully Mark Stoops thinks that too. Although I don’t really see why that has to be true.

As a BEARS fan, the rumors I keep hearing is it's going to be either Ryan Day or Harbaugh as our next coach.

Given the current climate of college football - all the madness surrounding the portal and NIL - you’re probably going to see a lot more of the top college coaches interested in the NFL.

For UK's purposes, I'm not sure which would be better...

If Day leaves OSU, Fickell likely goes from Cincy to OSU...Cincy becomes less appealing to local recruits = win for Stoops/Marrow

If Harbaugh leaves Michigan, next staff may or may not be as good or as intent on recruiting the state of Michigan = possible win for Stoops/Marrow

Stoops won't leave for Ann Arbor. I doubt he ever leaves now more than ever. As the raises, extensions, and budget commitments keep coming, and he continues having extraordinary experiences, good and bad, at UK, I think he is connecting to the school and coming to a sense of ownership of the program and identification with it that he'll not be giving up for an opportunity to be put on trial.

Regardless which, if one of those is the choice, look for Franklin to get a raise.

I have always thought Harbaugh is more suited for the NFL anyway. OSU and Michigan are not going to have problems with keeping players so the NIL/portal is a moot point for programs like that. The NIL/portal is going to hurt the smaller programs the most IMO not the traditional powers.

Any potential UK pickups?

If Fickell goes to OSU I believe he will make recruiting Ohio a bigger priority than the previous two coaches have. So I don't know if that would help us all that much. As a BEARS fan, I'm not interested in Day as our head coach, I don't think he can cut it in the NFL. He hasn't really blown it out of the water at OSU.

I'm more interested in Harbaugh as our next coach as he has shown he can get it done in the NFL. I think his style of play is better suited for the NFL and honestly, I think he's tired of Michigan. But him leaving would probably help us in pulling those few players we tend to go after in Michigan each cycle.

If by “moot point” you mean it won’t tip the balance of power you may be right, although I don’t think we have enough data to say that conclusively yet. But no matter what school you’re talking about coaches now have to recruit the portal, they have to re-recruit their own players, they have to coach their team with player retention in mind in a way they didn’t have to before, and they’ll have to be actively involved in securing NIL deals for players. You’ve taken what was already an 80-100 hour per week job and added multiple new headaches. Don’t be surprised if more top guys with NFL options don’t start taking them. We’ll see I guess.

I'd say in 3 more seasons we will know exactly how the portal will be going forward. That will give us 5 years of data on it. Are the big programs going to lose some players? Of course, some kids will realize they don't like the school/coaches/city as much as they thought and want out or they don't see a way forward with the school playing significant minutes. But with that, you will see small schools (MAC, American, etc.) lose their top players to P5 programs. I don't see anything wrong with the portal, it's not like the kids will be transferring at the end of every season it's just a one time thing, then if they start losing seasons and have to sit out.

If any head coach has half a brain he will have an analyst whose job it is to monitor the portal at all times. Coaches have always been re-recruiting their own players, and sometimes they tell players they will be better off elsewhere. This has been going on forever. If I recall correctly schools are not allowed to secure NIL deals for players.

And honestly, the NFL isn't all that keen on going to the college ranks for their coaches. The only time they do that is usually for really big name coaches, Kingsbury being the exception. 95% of the time they try to pick apart staff from other winning teams. The NFL is a copycat league. When the Chiefs were killing it everyone was wanting coaches from Andy Reids tree, then McVay tree, etc.
