November matters to me. He takes away college basketball from me every November. I can’t listen to podcasts or watch other games. All because this 90s guy can’t figure out modern basketball lineups. I don’t even care about scheme! Just play the right lineups and sit on the bench.

It screws us on offense, on defense, in November and in March.

It’s basic basketball at this point. This isn’t highly nuanced avant-garde stuff. Smallball isn’t a strategy. It’s the way the game is played. If you don’t play that way, you lose.
We are down in the waning minutes. Oscar fouled out. Ware is actually in the game.

That sums up his myopia.

Pro teams are putting their 4 best offensive players on the court. Roll with Toppin/Collins at the 5 and go with Wheeler/Fredrick/Reeves/Wallace.

- Toppin should be a small ball 5 for a few min each game.
- Livingston, you could even argue is small ball 5. If houser can, why can’t he?
- Ware should never play. Playing short handed on offense.
- Collins is only a 5.
- I saw CJ = Grady tonight. Back and forth on baseline. Someone find me how many miles he had to run to get 8 shots and then comp it against houser.
- Wheeler is a distributor, running the O thru him late in games is stupid.
- Reeves avg 20 and can’t get in in OT when offense is crap.
- Stupid ass lineups in first half and second half early cost them this game. He even has to know it’s stupid bc when it’s nut crunch time, those guys don’t play.
-Zone the inbounds play you stupid ass.
-Likewise, run an inbounds play for us.
-3.7 seconds and only get a half court shot. Jesus.
-You have sr and jr all over the roster. Don’t give me this crap that it’s early.

Your guys are Reeves, Wallace, Fredrick, Oscar and then whom?

Toppin
Livingston

Hell, a creative coach would play Wallace at the 4. He sure as hell can rebound and guard modern 4s … who are usually just 6’7” wings today.

Look, I’m at the bargaining stage. Play Collins at the 4 … but only with:

Wallace
Fredrick
Reeves
Tshiebwe

It’s not ideal but at least you have 3 shooters and the best player in basketball.

This is basic shit. These NBA analysts laugh at Cal. They can’t believe what they’re seeing.

Doron Lamb’s ability to get wideass open looks in this offense only gets more mystifying over time.

That was 11 years ago.
You had to guard Jones from 3.
Davis is one of the best college basketball players of the past 25 years.

And - Lamb just hit shots.

These other guys - Booker, Herro, Murray, etc - yeah you say they’re shooters but Doron knocked them down at 48% and DGAF when - Elite 8, National Championship. DGAF. No slumps. No “couldn’t get a good look.” Just hit’m.

BBdK has been posting his usual onsite hype vids all day and I appreciate it, but I said it 4 years ago and I don’t see why all my BBN friends don’t agree:

I am never ever ever going back to Indy. I hate that F’ing city. That arena is a garbage place to watch a game.

Add this one to …
Wisconsin 2015
Duke 2018
St. Peters 2022

And I still have buddies going back. Place could burn down for all I care.

I really thought we could count on Collins and Toppin. Too early to shut that down but man it looks like they will just be regular guys and not guys we need to win it all. That’s why I’m most disappointed I’m not sure I see the help our main 4/5 need.

Wheeler - 30 min
Reeves - 30 min
CJ - 30 min
Cason - 30 min
*Three of these guys should always be in and account for all the minutes of the 1-3 positions. Wheeler does not play last 3 min.

Oscar - 32
Toppin -25

That leaves 23 min for Livingston, #33, and ware combined.

That’s it!

Cal hasn’t watched any tapes in the last 20 years so he doesn’t realize you can run screens and even several screens during a play.
You’re not gonna wear a team down when they’re basically guarding trees 🌲
Ego is one thing but flat out stupidity is where Cal is now.

Three out of these four must be in the game at all times : Oscar, Reeves, Frederick and Wallace.

Two of these players cannot play together for any stretch of time : Collins, Ware, Toppin, UKO

I don't know what to make of Livingston. He's got the physical attributes but doesn't contribute much offensively and didn't really stay in front of his guy with all of the switching on D.

I would start Wallace, Frederick, Reeves, Toppin and Oscar but Toppin is getting the quickest hook if he starts playing NBA 2K out there. First off the bench should be Thiero/UKO IMO because those dudes are dogs and we need them come March. They logged 1 minute combined to Collins/Wares 34 and net 4 points, 4 rebounds.

Turns out Cal can hide players, he just forgets where he puts them.

What if Tubby had the same losses Cal has had over the last 3 seasons? Joe B? Billy G? Seriously. What would’ve happened to those guys had they amassed this same resume Cal has put together?

It’s really our fault for thinking anything would change. Marketing and recruiting is a hell of gift to have to mask every other deficiency of an on-court product.

I don’t expect much going forward. I’ll go so far as to say we’ll have to get DAMN lucky to get to another Final 4 with Cal. No way he’s getting another Natty. Don’t care what the recruiting class looks like. It’s hopeless.

Btw, we gave up two uncontested dunks to end both regulation and 1OT.

The first one appeared to be a miscommunication. And it was bad. But it's happened before. Whatever

The second, however, was just unfathomable. Overplaying the inbounds pass by BOTH guards, giving up a laughable 3 on 1. Mind-boggling when you have a lead. Why? Sit your ass back and pick up at midcourt, switch every screen.

If the offensive ineptitude didn't sell you -- this one effing should. These mistakes literally cost us the game.

Coached by a clown.

All Cal’s colleagues eventually went modern - K, Wright, Self, Few, etc.

Only one who stuck with the old way was Roy who bounced.

Self has completely changed his lineup approach. He may have a traditional big and even a PG who can’t shoot but ALWAYS surrounds them with three knockdowns.

Hubert Davis slogged through a shit season but stuck with his modern lineup, and it eventually paid off.

Even Izzo- you had to guard four guys on the perimeter at all times.

There just aren’t many programs that play as few of shooters as we do.

And we have the personnel. It’s just buried.

Scheme is certainly to blame but to me, it’s lineups mostly.

Rack this!

No need to press here. Just dig in and play tough half court D. You switch everything that way you don’t give up the 3 or anything easy and they only have 7 seconds so not much time to exploit the mismatch.
