Football thoughts from a non-football guy who still loves his teams:
- Have had the weekend to really stew or simmer or whatever over Saturday's debacle and these are the thoughts that keep running through my head:
* Maybe Stoops has taken us to our highest possible ceiling? God bless him. No one else could have come in here and shown us this peak, but this is it. When we peak, we are a 8-9 win team heading into a nice bowl with a chance to get to 10 wins, maybe. We are - AT BEST - 3rd in our division. That's the ceiling. That's not being a p---y a-- bit--. That's being realistic - something that I need to be more of as I head into the back side of my life on this earth.
* Lack of any real NIL initiative from the athletic department is going to further plummet us into despair.
* Whatever our identity was - a smash mouth/prostyle football team - is not sustainable for UK in this league. It's something even Saban got away from. Offense and explosive playmakers should be top priority.
* Honestly, we just need something fun in September and October. Something that will give us just a little joy until the impending dark, cold, and grey come looming into the bluegrass.
* Will Levis, bless his heart. I suppose I will always respect that he continued to play while hurt and beat up for us this season. But that guy has cost himself a ton of money and has been exposed. As soon as he was mentioned as a possible top 3 pick in the draft, he should have had a minor surgery on something and called it a season. He could have been the "mystery pick" of the draft, but now I'm afraid smart football guys have seen enough. He's going to slide like crazy.
* I don't care if these thoughts piss people off. If they do, it means they are on point.
* Going forward, it may be best to remember we are UK, not Alabama, LSU, Georgia, or even Florida during off-season media days. Shut up, know your place, put your head down, and try not to embarrass yourselves.
* Stoops isn't going anywhere. This was his season to get "fat and happy" just like our HOF basketball coach. There are no "greener pastures" for him. If he leaves, it will either be a lateral move or a preemptive "leave before they can terminate my contract" type of deal.
* I'm cool with Stoops staying here as long as possible. But I must understand that there is no "next step" to take. He has taken us as far as we can go. Maintain mediocrity and then capitalize when we have the Benny Snells, the C-Rods, the Lynn Bowdens, the Josh Allens, et al. Enjoy the ride . . . it may be a long, boring trip through Kansas and Iowa, but it is what it is.
