Grumpier old men

I must admit I was a dick 1 time. At the 2012 Final 4, I had 4 tickets a few rows from the top and my oldest son sat with his aunt and uncle in a different section. My wife, daughter and youngest son were with me. At the time my youngest son was 9 and was sitting beside me. Again even then I didn’t stand up much. In the UL game I think it was near halftime and Miller stole the ball near mid court and went in for a dunk. I jumped up to cheer and from behind I feel someone try to pull me down. I was pissed turned with fist drawn back and it was some late 50s early 60s old man. (I’m almost there now lol). I laughed and told him he better not put hands on me again. He moved to sit behind my 9 year old so I switched seats with my 9 year old. He gave up.

The prick wasn’t even a fan of any team. He just bitched about UK. When UK hit a big three late, my 9 year old turned around and 3 goggled his ass. In front of my daughter there were some Duke fans cheering against UK. She just kept bringing up Lehigh in conversations. 😂😂

" I’m 6’3” so I pay attention to who is around me and try to be considerate but I’m jumping up at big plays etc. If people would step back and just be a little more self aware, they (those regulars) would understand that they can be disruptive as well."
The extremists on each end of this issue are the problem. No one should expect a fan to not jump up at a big play or stand and cheer on the team at times. By the same token, no one should be inconsiderate of others and think it's ok to stand from player introductions until the end of the game either. Even if you have a "right" to do something it doesn't mean that it is always the "right" thing to do. Too many people are self-centered and inconsiderate of others.

There is an illusion about Duke. In that cracker box gym, the tv camera shows the rows of "Cameron Crazies" that are situated along the sideline. If you could see the rest of the crowd, you would see a totally different picture. If you believe everyone else is standing up during the whole game, you're absolutely wrong.
Just my opinion, but I think the constant "noise" like at Duke is actually less effective than the extra "burst" of cheers that occurs at Rupp when the crowd senses that the team needs it.

That's all that can get the good lower arena seats---wealthy old people who want to sit down the entire time.

Look, I don't think it's worth standing up until it's crunch time or something amazing happens but if you want to just sit down in your sweater with your arms crossed and then get pissed at others being excited then why are you even at the game? Just watch at home so someone else can make Rupp a more hostile arena for opposing teams.

Live sporting events are losing their luster to me. Pay out the ass for parking (got charged $27 for a non UK event at Rupp across the street in the fall), deal with traffic, overpriced bad food, and then tons of people.

I knew Rupp arena was special but not this “ special”….. College Basketball games supposed to be fun, engaging the fans that would respond to the team playing good and bad. I never thought of a college basketball game an opera show where everyone dresses up and sits and watches with binoculars.

I guess Michael Phelps will never put foot in Rupp Arena:

Andy Kats does not even list Rupp arena in top 10 college basketball places:

I am not saying let’s have an atmosphere like in Europe:

Where probably they will arrest you if you actually sit down. But this is gone too far. …

I am still hoping Pope will eventually address the lack of home court advantage that current atmosphere caused by the sitting distribution at Rupp Arena and stupid policies like this one.
We should stop this stupid political correctness culture that’s killing everything including watching a college basketball game …

I by no means plan to stand for the entire game, I agree that’s a little overkill if someone is behind you, but when a good play is made I fully intend to stand up and cheer.

Not to get sidetracked but to me it’s entirely unjust and unwarranted to threaten jail time over standing up to cheer for your team.

Oof! It's Louisville. I'm sorry, but this stuff chaps me. Get off your tail if you wanna see the action during a RIVALRY GAME.
I'm as blue as they come. Have been since birth. It's generational with my family. I went to school there, etc. I am 66 years old now and I have two bad knees, waiting on a replacement for one. I would love to stand for the whole game like I used to, BUT, I physically can't right now. Believe me, I know how excited fans get. I did and still do. But should I be deprived of watching my beloved Cats because of someone standing the whole time. Even when I could stand the whole time, I never did out of RESPECT for the fans behind me. Is it so horrible to sit down occasionally? I don't think so. Again. it's called RESPECT!!!

So you must be on hospice care then? According to @UKBrassowTipIN
Pretty disrespectful take.

What is awful if the "hospice care" comment. He , and you, need to be careful. One day you might actually be on hospice care and then you wouldn't be making rude comments like that.
Maybe you took him to literal or it struck a nerve because of your age. I took it as the older crowd who is there for show and tell aka the blue hairs. I’ll tell you one thing though I dont need a warning from you to be careful, that’s for sure. I didn’t say a thing wrong. Also, if I end up in hospice, I’m not gonna care what someone on a forum says about it. Of all the “rude things” said on this forum you sure do pick an odd thing to get sassy about with someone who has never said a crossword to you.

No I'm not. I just can't stand for the whole game. And like I said, even when I could, I didn't out of respect for the people behind me. Respect is something that is definitely lacking in a lot of "fans", not just ours, but across the board. If everyone would be a little more respectful and not so selfish, I truly believe that ALL fans could enjoy the game.
And yes, his comment was pretty disrespectful.

Yes, maybe because of my age, but more so because I have know a lot of people, some a lot younger than me, be in hospice care. And no, I didn't take him totally too literal. I put that comment in the same category as "blue hairs". Comments meant to insult or belittle someone because you are upset with them, like taking up the good seats, because they have the money to spend and someone else doesn't. To be honest, pretty much the same with the hospice comment. A comment meant to insult or belittle someone. I just get tired of trying to have a discussion, good or bad, about basketball or a basketball topic, and then someone has to insert the name calling and insults into the discussion. A discussion about sitting or standing, pros and cons, could have been had without resorting to that. And I do see both sides, believe it or not, because I've been on both sides. So I'm really not for or against standing vs sitting. I love good discussions on this forum. I love to learn and have learned a lot from all you guys (and girls). But when things like that happen, it takes away from the good discussions (for me, anyway).

The point of contention is you think it’s disrespectful to stand and cheer for his team. To me it’s disrespectful to attend a game and to expect people not to stand cheer and have a good time. I’m not standing all game but I’m sure not sitting on my hands if a great play happens to appease the person behind me that doesn’t stand.

We agree more than you think. I’d be pissed if someone stood in front of me or my family the entire game. And my mother isn’t capable of that. However, having said that, I would be expecting people in front of me to stand for an amazing play and if I couldn’t and I still attend Id have accept they are going to.

As far as hospice, I blew over it and didn’t think it had ill intent, you did apparently. The blue hair name to me wasn’t calling names, it’s just a name of the old money if you will, at the games. I’m not sure of any other term that would be universally accepted by the BBN that everyone would immediately know who was being discussed.

Yes, I'd love to stand like I used to. But I NEVER said that when I did stand it was for the entire time. I do think it's rude to not be respectful of people behind you. My beliefs and opinions have NOT changed. Maybe you should read and understand the entire comments I make, before you comment.

Again, just to be clear. I always loved to stand. I never stood for the entire time out of respect for others around me. Yes, I think it's rude to not be aware of others ability to enjoy the game as well as your enjoyment.

I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED TO STAND BUT NOT THE WHOLE TIME. I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WAS SOMEWHAT RUDE TO DO SO, EVEN WHEN I COULD AND DID STAND. UNDERSTAND?!

EDIT: This is an apology to @Skyguyb27. I wrote this BEFORE we had a discussion a few comments later on here. I'm sorry for getting "bitchy". There's no excuse for becoming obnoxious even though it's been a rough period for me lately and I seem to be a little touchy on some things. Again, sorry.

This is what I truly appreciate about this forum. We can discuss something even if we don't agree. But you're right. We do agree a lot more than I think. It just took me a while to get there🤪. Sorry for jumping the gun. And thank you for pointing out some things I needed to hear and understand. Some words just seem to be a trigger for me. (I do not like the word "trigger" for me personally!)🤪😜

We are all good. I have a tendency to sound like a jerk online for some reason much more than real life. ( I do like a good banter on occasion if the other person fires back, (like Don’tworryaboutit) I think maybe my mind hears it one way vs how it’s perceived by the rest. This one however caught me off guard because I didn’t even say it, I was just curious what was awful. 😂 I have always respected you as a poster and I wasn't looking for a disagreement.

The cop would have an issue if he arrested them unless the person was formally trespassed and refused to leave. However, given the person had purchased a ticket giving them consent (essentially a contract) to be there and assuming was not violating any rules but was just standing, I wouldn’t want to be Rupp defending the legality of the trespass. A creative attorney could bring up although Rupp is privately owned, Rupp did take public funds to renovate, potentially bringing more issues in to play to legally trespass someone.

This is in the guest conduct policy.

Ejection from Rupp Arena: Disruptive or problematic guests should be reported to event staff immediately. Guests asked to vacate the arena may be escorted from the premises by event staff, security, facility management or local law enforcement.

Who decides what is disruptive or problematic conduct? The guests? Or the facilities security? It’s kind of a catch all

So I went to a game this year and it was my first time sitting in the lower section. Historically when we went I had to get 5 tickets so couldn’t get lower arena. Now that we are all older this time just my youngest son and I went. We had really good seats and could tell we were with the regular season ticket holders.

There were so many regulars who would stand up to talk to others and were not watching the game. Many would walk down and stand in the aisle talking to another fan and were oblivious to blocking views. Many arrived late and took their sweet time getting to their seats, taking coats off etc. Many would get up multiple time during action forcing the row to move and miss plays. People were there with small kids and took multiple trips up to the concession stand etc. All this was “disruptive” but because they were doing it they could not care less.

Now should I have bitched and tried to get them thrown out? Of course not. I went to a sporting event and that happens. If I want total control of my view basically I can buy floor seats or watch at home. I’m 6’3” so I pay attention to who is around me and try to be considerate but I’m jumping up at big plays etc. If people would step back and just be a little more self aware, they (those regulars) would understand that they can be disruptive as well.
Of course, those with money feel like they can do whatever they want, but if anything happens to them it’s over.

Good luck arguing standing being disruptive at a sporting event, and jail time for it? Laughable.

I think going to sporting events is a place one should expect a lot of standing and cheering period. It would be nice to sit down and enjoy the game but I can’t deny anyone the right to cheer however they want too. If I’m forced to stand then so be it. I definitely understand those who paid for a ticket wanting certain things but also they need to remember what they are purchasing tickets too as well. If I couldn’t I could see how that would be a problem, but then I probably just wouldn’t attend anyway.i also wouldn’t go to a concert and get in a mosh pit either. I’d never call the police or kick someone out for being in a mosh pit either. It’s kinda expected at some events.

Exactly plus most of the, just use the game as a social event, they knit, read books, and are on their phone the entire time, the event is what people should go for!
