Georgia’s WR Burton transfers to Alabama

This system will ruin cfb worse than one and dones with cbb
I'm good with kids not being stuck like they have been historically but they better get on the transfer portal thing quickly to bring some order to the execution of it. I mean this isn't even professional sports. At least in the pros a player has a term that teams know when the contract ends etc to have some sort of management of situations...it's not a free for all every single year for each roster spot.

Yep. This is ridiculous. It’s also going to benefit the Alabama’s even more so.

If you’re a long-time college coach, this would be the ideal time to get out. Between this and the NIL stuff, it’s just going to be even more frustrating and exhausting trying to build a team and keep any depth. Good luck convincing any kid to stick around for a shot two or three years from then.

Agreed....even when the portal benefits UK and all...this is nonsense guys running from here to there.

1. If you have a coaching change....then fine. Open up all the kids as they were brought in under a specific scheme
2. But the rest....they need to enforce the 1 year sit out rule....that would really put a ton of this every year free agency to bed.

Yeah, all they really have to do is change the 4 in 5 and keep the sit out. Transfer all you want, just have to sit out. But you don't lose your total years of eligibility. Heck, even if they made it a 6 game sit out it would be enough of a deterrent to just make it more legitimate transfers.

We dont play bama next season and play Georgia every year so good for uk.

Don't like the free agency that us college sports now but it is what it is.

There is zero excuse now in CFB if you are a traditional top 10, top 15 program fielding a team with any weak spots. Any position group in need of talent or experience can and should be filled up easily from taking guys off teams below yours. This is the reality of the portal plus NIL.

Bama is Bama. Saban dominates acquiring talent no matter the system. Let's see some others who should be national title contenders rise up. Miami, Texas, Southern Cal, Fl St, Penn St, etc.

Of just make it that the portal is only open to you afte your second year in a program. Or if your coach is no longer there one of the two. Since the main reason for transferring are coaches leaving or your stuck on the depth chart, but you need to give it two years before that could be a valid reason.

Make portal transfers allowed only to schools either a) with previous season conference record 500 or less, or b) to one with a one game worse conference record than the school you are leaving if that record was over 500.

Not that college sports can't already do this but how much more frequent are we going to see superstars teaming up to create super teams? Like Heisman finalists joining up type of thing?

When a coach starts Stetson Bennett for three years you eventually realize that Georgia will never open up the offense. The kid has to think about his own future and do you want Stetson "game manager" Bennet tossing it to you twice a game or the reigning Heisman Trophy winner throwing it to you?

Word is that Kayshon Boutte was about to hit the portal so he could transfer to Bama to play his final season with Bryce Young but LSU's boosters stepped in with a very large NIL deal to convince him to stay.

He’s wild for that but i just don’t think it’s right to tell somebody where they can and can’t go to school and play ball. Coaches get paid millions to dollars to figure it out.

All I know is without the transfer portal, the Big Blue wildcats don't get to 10 wins this year......not even close.

I see this differently than the "rich get richer" narrative. The "rich" were always gonna be rich regardless of the portal. Teams one or two notches down the chain (UK) can now pull some quality and experienced talent from a marquee program or two to allow them to compete better with the marquee programs on their schedule.

Keep the transfer flow going right into Lexington!

GBB!

That's a shame. Young throwing to Boutte would've been fun to watch!

Agreed - now that we have an official college free agency (transfer portal) and approved salaries (NIL) for athletes, UK can now play the game others have been playing for years!

UK will not even be in the conversation for top NIL athletes. After Saban leaves and Bama has to rely on NIL they will not be getting the same guys either. Corporations with big pockets will funnel the players to their favorite school.

That would have been brutal for the rest of college football.

If you believe both UK and Bama won’t be able to benefit from NIL, what schools/corporations in your opinion will?

My opinion is there is enough $$$ around for us to benefit from this student athlete facade that has been created.

There is a self-limiting process here too because a lot of guys want PT and a chance to get to the next level. You don't have to be THE best player, but you don't want to be the 5th WR.

You have seen Alabama and Ohio State, teams producing WR's at the top of every draft in recent memory, also lose WR's to the portal.

LOL as if "corporate" money wasn't being funneled to kids, to steer them onto preferred teams before NIL?

NIL matters. Not as much as playing for a coach with a strong history of putting guys into the NFL. Not as much as opportunity to play soon rather than sit the bench 2-3 yrs. Not as much as playing in the best conference instead of an also ran league.

Not enough to outbid people like Nike, Fed Ex, T Boone Pickens group and hundreds of others with deeper pockets than UK alum. We will get second tier guys but not top5 once this thing gets rolling.

Unfortunately the net result of that is a slow deterioration of the sport itself for all and one that will have very little if anything to do with "UK" or any unversity itself as time goes by. Its the reason the colleges tried so hard to hang on to their amateur status as long as possible. But they ended up getting eaten by their own popularity of the game which drew all the mone which will harm the appeal over time.

It was a huge mistake for the NCAA/Emmert to just solely fight a battle to keep it all the same as it was. They could have been working on a solution that brought some order to the model and pay players for their NIL through the schools by setting rates in the player contracts etc. Instead, we've ended up with total chaos.

If you didn't know the names or teams, who would you think was the Heisman winner? The QB who passed for 2 TDs, 0 int, 9 yds per attempt and a 118 rating, or the qb would passed for 1 TD, 2 into. 7 yd per attempt and a 75 rating?

True. The NCAA surely mismanaged themselve into a bigger problem.
