GAME DAY

Travis Smith starting. Whew... not where I would have gone but Smith has shown he can rise to the occasion as well.

Surprised it’s Smith but if he throws well and gets the win Kentucky is set up well for the rest of the weekend.

I mean, I guess there is no real no brainer answer. We just don't have the guy that stepped up as the ace. We got a stable of really good guys but just don't have that one stud. So, I don't think the choice is necessarily the wrong or a bad one.

Lineup also seems a bit shook up. Gilliam dropped a bit. Waldy down a bit. McCoy over McCarthy. Stanke at DH. Nothing we haven't seen before but a bit different than what we have seen lately IIRC.

A positive of the early SEC loss is that maybe Burkes has his legs back a bit, which might help his approach.

Scary first for Smith. Ball State made a lot of contact, but he got a K to end a threat with runners on 2 and 3.

Burkes got a dying quail to center but otherwise UK goes quietly. 3b for State also made an unbelievable diving over the shoulder catch in foul territory to retire Gray.

Smith playing with a bit of fire, but it remains scoreless through the top of the 2nd.

Yea. He has the stuff but has some control issues and can get hit hard. He has some games where he isn't hittable others where he makes too many mistakes. Today he's not been perfect with location, but he's still perfect where it matters most.

This team has a knack for punishing mistakes and especially when they happen with bullpen pitchers.

Smith and Moore were fantastic

Smith started a bit shaky, but made the pitches when he needed to in order to get out of trouble. Then settled in. Moore was just unhittable. Not sure they got more than one or two even out of the infield against him.
