For Those Upset About WCS's Final Game Performance . . .

I went back and watched Willie on every single play of the championship game. He played much better than some of you remember.

Good lord. How did we ever lose a game. The WCS and KAT vids show just how amazing we were inside.

I'm not trying to be an Alabama homer - and my word, did they have some talent on that team - but watching WCS run the floor and shoot from the wing like that at his height, it has suddenly occurred to me that he is a hybrid of Robert Horry and Latrell Sprewell skill sets and body types. dammit, he is a serious prospect, and to think three 7 footers are going to go in front of him.

WCS played fine. He was tasked with defending a SF on the perimeter for much of the game. A job he performed quite well. He never factored into the game plan offensively, which wasnt unusual.

To me, Booker was the one with a really disappointing let down of a performance. He let Hayes dominate him to the point where it was a detriment for him to even check into the game.

I think you need to watch the game over again. Nobody said he needed to score 50 points, what we did expect was at least a little effort on the boards. His feet were glued to the court when there was a rebound to be had. Couple that with another poor showing on offense and not much defensive effort you get the opinion that he took the game off which it seems like he and some others did.

nah. Booker hurt us on the defensive end because Wisconsin was smart enough to take advantage of him switching onto Dekker and Kaminsky. There was one kid who played poorly on both ends, in not just the Wiscy game but against ND as well. And yet that was rarely noticed by fans. Willie arguably disappeared; worse than not making plays is making bad ones.....

I've brought it up a bunch of times and how Georgia laid the foundation down on switches and spreading the court on how to beat us. We never adjusted our D to counter what teams were starting to do to us. And yes Booker did not show up but he didn't show up for half the season. But that's typical for a freshmen. WCS is a junior and a top 5 pick and is simply not very aggressive for much of the game. Somebody as big as he is and skilled like his workout videos shows he should be a double double machine from the center/ forward/ wing no matter where.
Remember the play where the Wisconsin guy got his own rebound and scored after the clock expired? What is WCS doing?

It's unbelievable that he didn't show for the Wisconsin game. He took many games off, but to do that to his team and coaches in the Final Four is terrible.
I was going to ash how him working out for the Wizards became a topic about Wisconsin?

Forgot about that. Good point.
I love Willie, simple as that, but he took games off by his own admission. Take off the blue glasses and go back and watch the WI game in full. Willie gets a dunk to start the game and was done for the most part after that. I love Willie and wish him the best going forward but he could have been a difference maker if he had decided to show up that night.

For the billionth time telling the truth about any player and their shortcomings or saying that had a an awful night is NOT TRASHING A PLAYER . Willie sucked against ND and Wisky , He took entire games off , heck he took entire weeks off . But when he wanted to be a game changer he certainly was . Because of that he will not be a all time type favorite of mine , even though last years team obviously will be .
Also the title of this thread is silly . I hope willie does well in the league but not sure his start up , shut down , hit miss type motor translates to the NBA game .

Big difference between being critical and trashing a player. Some people can't take any criticism without thinking it's a personal attack.

Get out rebounded 2-1 and it is what it is.

Stein had a pretty lackluster tourney. Outside of a monster jam against UC and the 9 seconds of defense against ND he was pretty timid. I don't know if it was the foot, or the stage, or whatever but he just didn't play well. Good luck to him in the pros and I hope he grows up some more and matures because I think he'll need it at the next level.

From the article: "Stein earned 2015 Consensus First-Team All-American, 2015 NABC National Defensive Player of the Year, 2015 NBC Sports National Defensive Player of the Year, 2015 AP All-America First Team, 2015 USBWA All-America First Team, 2015 NABC All-America First Team, 2015 Rupp Award All-America, 2015 Midwest Region All-Tournament team, 2015 USA Today All-America First Team, 2015 SEC Defensive Player of the Year, 2015 All-SEC First Team, 2015 All-SEC Defensive Team, 2014 All-SEC Defensive Team and 2013 All-SEC Freshman Team, and became the first player in UK history to amass 200 or more blocks and 100 or more steals. In his final season with the Wildcats, he started in all 39 games, where he led UK in steals (47), while ranking second in blocked shots (67). As a junior, he notched career-best marks in starts, minutes per game, free-throw percentage, rebounds, assists, steals and points."

Yeah, that's a lot of suckage for one guy to have to bear. I'm sure the NBA will take that into account when they make him a millionaire.

You ever think he might have been doing exactly what was asked of him? You think that an opposing team's strategy might have been to minimize his impact?

Discussing a guy's game with statistics and things they could have done different on a given play is one thing. Saying a guy "took the night off" is quite another, as though he decided, 'I'm not gonna play'. That's insulting, stupid, idiotic and a lot of other names I can think of. Its also trashing a player. Its time for fans to get over the loss. I think the players and coaches have moved on with their lives. We got beat. Its not the biggest loss in our history. It won't be the biggest loss in our future.

Of course, he didn't take the night off. Perhaps he didn't have his best night, there was a small amount of pressure in that game, playing for a spot in history. You know, trivial stuff. Perhaps the five other guys on the floor might have had something to do with that. Our team got beat. Willie had an outstanding career at UK. That's the way history will and should remember it. The only ones not putting forth their maximum effort in that game were sitting on the couch.

The switching on Booker was a BIG problem that was never corrected. JS

First, no one hated losing to Wisconsin more than I did. But I cannot put any blame on Willie or Booker for their play or lack of. Without them we would not have been there to begin with.
If you look at what happened, we must look at the FACT we got up by 4 with around 4 minutes to play by wearing them out. They were holding their shorts trying to catch their breath. We took the air out of the ball for 25 of the 35 seconds three straight times. 75 seconds of on court rest and momentum restoration was what sent us home that night. Plus a bad break or two.
Who made that call will be up to the individual. But to say Willie didn't shine and Devon hurt us is glossing over the real reason we lost that night.

Good to see Willie doing well. He's looking like he's expanding on his game.

Looks like the thread was derailed.

ICoach Cal is as much to blame for not making the championship game as anyone. In game adjustments were horrible for a high level D-1 coach in that game. I love the guy, but if I'm going to bash any player for not showing up, I'm gonna do the same thing with coach cal. They all had a part to play. The philosophy of "play our game worry about no one else" does NOT work at that point in the year. We were not playing Vandy, and that's the attitude we carried. We were always beatable. Tearing apart a down SEC never changed that. Cal overestimated our team and underestimated the final four. Also The Wisconsin game should teach everyone why the players need to be studying game tape. When I heard a Boob Ryan say his team was studying game tape until the end, I knew immediately we were probably in trouble. You cannot be OVER prepared. This myth is carried by lots of people who never played or coached at any level. But even if you could, I'd much rather be over-prepared than under-prepared. Any day of the week. That's my opinion on that.

And before it happens, IM OVER IT!!!!!! But should objective people get over it? - Or should the some of you come to terms with how we lost? Hmm.... "Everyone did fine we lost get over it" is one of the more annoying things you'll ever see on this board.

I agree we lost tons of long rebounds and 50/50 balls. We maybe lost all of them. But thats on a few players. WCS, Lyles, and anyone on the perimeter. Wisconsin just chased down everything. They wanted it more.

Your all wrong....Ulis in the game we win going away

This is true too The twins refused to throw the ball to KAT. Basically ended with 3 empty possessions. No doubt Ulis wouldve made a difference.

The switching on Booker was a BIG problem that was never corrected. JS

It basically forced Cal to sit him. Soon as Booker came in, they ran action at him that forced him to switch on Dekker or Hayes; and they dominated him. Pretty disappointing to not show more toughness than that.

But the whole thing starts with Poythress' injury. If hes healthy, he guards Dekker. Instead, Cal knows Lyles cant guard him, so WCS has to. It messed up our entire defensive rotation. The same thing almost cost us the ND game too.

No, he didn't.

First team All-American. Remember that.

You must have some super low expectations of your all Americans in final four games. Just sayin.

Yea, the twins just suddenly stopped listening to cal, completely, for 3 straight possessions, 2 nights before the title game. Lol.

Even if it were true, which I don't buy, he had plenty of time to cal a timeout. I guess for the first time Cal was willing to let his players completely disrespect him and do the opposite of what he's calling. I'm sorry I'll never believe that. Cal was stalling and its vintage Cal.

But the twins have been easy to throw under the buss since they got here.

I agree 100% Willie has great talent and an even better upside, but a lot of onlookers see a player that takes off more than he shows up. The scouting on him must reveal a player with so much potential that the level of importance he places on his game is of minor importance to them because every authority has him picked to go before #10. I was personally very disappointed in the fact that he was so distraught after the loss to Wisconsin Saturday he showed up at the car store @ 9:00 AM Monday to order his new sports car while I was still in grief mode. No hate for Willie here, I love the kid, I was young once also. Hope he grows out of it, he can be one of the best ever.

Alex Poythress= National Championship. I knew it would bite us.
i think a lot of us realized what we lost. but the train was already rolling and it was too much of a downer to talk about. no doubt in my mind we win it all with alex in the rotation.
