FWIW, I think "pre-spring position rankings" are about as meaningless as any football topic I can imagine. The primary purpose of spring practice is to reinforce fundamentals and "audition" replacements for departed players.

Now if you had accurate and unbiased reports of post spring results you might be able to cobble together some sort of still unreliable rankings but at least you would have some tangible results upon which to base your opinion. So, while meaningless,, this topic does provide for some pre-spring football conversation...or arguments.

Here is Aschoff and Company's full set of position rankings. If these rankings really meant anything it would be pretty bad news for the Cats.

Peace

agree mostly with those rankings "preseason". i think our d-line has a chance to be better this year than last because of depth and experience. so its a fair ranking but we could surprise here. our lb'ers will be better. they got better as the year went on and we have some solid depth behind them. this group is probably ranked a spot or 2 too low but its fair off what they showed last year. the one group i thought got way too little respect was the wr's. i thought we'd get more respect considering the depth of the group and the fact that we "should" be healthy this year. robinson and blue led us in receptions but they were not our best wr's. timmons played with a bum shoulder, garrett is a star in the making, bone showed some flashes, badet is back and was probably the best his freshman year, conrad finally gives us a receiving threat at te... i like this group. qb is ranked about right but he could easily be the best in the conference if he improves as much this year as last and gets some better protection up front.

Agree we had terrible kick coverage, but we have arguably a top 3 combo of punter/kicker. Macginnis is automatic and Landon is a very good punter. Hopefully Naivar took the bad luck with him.

I was amazed at the reasons for some of their rankings. It seemed they had not a clue with some of their evaluations. Hit and pick guess work at its best. I feel less intelligent after reading that drivel

I agree that UKs punt and KO coverage was bad but IMO they have a kicking duo as good as any in the SEC. IMO the kick coverage will make a big improvement this year and we still have the good PK and punter. The Cats will not be dead last on special teams this season. I will guarantee that will be high on Stoops list to improve this year. I am also expecting that KO and punt returns will be much improved. Naivar was the one member of the coaching staff that I was not sorry to see go. The infusion of the redshirts and some of the true Freshmen is going to make a big difference in special teams. Lots of DBs and LBs for the kick coverage teams.

Interesting the OP states this preseason stuff was "about as meaningless as any football topic I can imagine" but then linked them with glee. Think UK's low ratings had anything to do with that, huh?

Thanks Wildcard. Really enjoy looking at this stuff. However, It really shows the bias of SEC football, which is typical. They called Boom Williams' "ok". He would be a Heisman candidate if he had that type of freshman season at Alabma. I thought UK's special teams would rank high based upon UK's kicker and punter and UK was still last in special teams based upon coverage which could be completely different players next year.

I pointed that out on the other thread. These way too early positional rankings are pure speculation at best but this guy didn't even put enough mental energy into it to toast bread. This is the kind of article you write when you get paid to write something but don't have anything worth saying. There was no real analysis done in that article and no research. He just rambled off names of people he's heard of as justification for rankings.

Team has a lot to prove this coming season. A lot of young guys who need start making a name for themselves join this conference. I think its hard to rank positions for teams who play so many young guys like KY has had to.

We now get to see how well this staff can develop their players.

Hard to believe they had us at the top, kicker had a couple games he missed 2 , couple were 50+ yard attempts and our punter just wasn't very good, but we didn't give up much at all in returns and McKensie is a very good return guy. But our punter is weak.

C1180, TB, those are pretty good descriptions of this kind of "reporting".

Until we start putting up Win's we have to expect to get no respect at any of our positions. Winning will change all of that.
