Had ACL surgery Monday and still hobbled in to Memorial for the scrimmage last night. Can’t do a lot right now, so figured I’d spend a few minutes and share my first impressions on the team for those who couldn’t make it.

Bigs - look to be in great shape, up and down the court quickly, boxed out well, moved around a lot, set good screens, not a lot of rim protection, though

Williams - big and athletic, have seen some good passes from him and heard players say he’s a good passer, but I worry about him wanting to be a playmaker hitting guys cutting to the basket.. it doesn’t look like a high percentage play right now, could get better with more time and improved chemistry with this team.. shot is so ugly, but %s seem okay

Carr - smart and under control, great looking shot, had a quiet 25 pts, going to put up strong numbers this year

Almonor - shot was really off and needs to settle down.. think he can really shoot, just needs to get comfortable with his role, good for a big guy at getting down the floor quickly and getting to a spot to spread the court, got caught with too many unnecessary reaching fouls

Garrison - flashed some, surprised to see the efficiency in the box score because he seemed kinda out of place on both ends of the floor.. lot of athleticism if he can learn the system

Wings - little more firepower and versatility in this group than I thought

Robinson - plays at pace that allows him to surprise the defense with a burst.. interesting seeing Pope’s practices instilled in him, he’s so quick to catch a forward pass up the court to him and automatically have his feet set facing the rim and ready to shoot if it’s there.. can get his shot off with guy in his face if needed

Brea - surprised at the lack of production in the box score, because he actually impressed me.. he was able get to spots off the dribble, get guys on his hip, set up teammates.. the comfort handling the ball surprised me, looked like a pro.. can shoot with a guy in his face if needed and very willing to shoot in your eye if he’s in a triple threat and you’re not taking the shot away.. can take and finish left, confident and great looking shot

Noah - kind of limited to 3 and D and rebounding right now.. if they passed to him he was ready to get rid of it immediately.. can help spread the floor and will shoot if open, good looking shot.. probably more comfortable and bit more of a factor next year

Chandler - surprisingly one of the guys that stepped up at crunch time.. will flash at times, but looks like the kind of guy that will take off after some time in college training and nutrition.. brings some excitement, could be a fan favorite

Guards - not a lot of wiggle here, but some athletes and specialists, were really bad at the drive and lob in the first half, connected on some in the second

Kriisa - DNP

Butler - so strong I hope he doesn’t get cheap checking fouls.. going to be a pain in the ass for whoever we’re playing.. leader out there, played all 40, 7:1, deferred until end of the game, but then drove hard to get some tough layups and draw fouls

Perry - with Kerr out, got to play starting PG for the Blue and looked the part, couple of bad turnovers, but a good performance against a strong and experienced Butler.. didn’t get a lot of shots off, but was willing to force the action in crunch time and ultimately hit the GW FT

Oweh - real wild card for me, makes shots, but form is ugly, strong driver, will benefit from this team’s spacing

Overall, I was surprised at the random moments of standing around some when I was expecting some kind of magical, never ending motion. Lot of DHO action. Also, lot of picking up the dribble in not the best spots. But, when they clicked for spurts, they would light up the scoreboard. There’s a feeling you get when there’s a really good shooter open or almost open and you’re hoping they let it rip.. we have a lot of guys that give you that feeling and they’re all letting it rip.
