For those that believe you must have projected draft picks on the roster to compete for a title, UK now has five (5) players projected in the Top 100 of ESPN’s NBA draft board.
  • No. 60 | SG/SF Koby Brea
  • No. 75 | C Amari Williams
  • No. 78 | SG/SF Jaxson Robinson
  • No. 91 | PF/C Andrew Carr
  • No. 92 | SG Otega Oweh
I don’t have a subscription to access the full list of players.

I mean, all this says is thay they don't predict any players to be drafted (Brea at 60 just literally sneaks in).. and we will never know if a team like Boston would taken Kobe Brea at 61 or not.

I also still believe that this team is winning because of 1. Coaching, as we pulled wins put of our asses with 2nd half adjustments and 2. Experience, we don't make a lot of mistakes.

If we win anything in March it's gonna be because of those two things.. not our talent.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if Pope took a bunch of 3* portal players, had a better season and had more draft picks than Cal? 😂
The first part has pretty much already happened…..the second part isn’t going to happen……which makes the first part even better

Already a better season. Couldn't care less about draft picks. Would much rather win more college bball games and draft less players.
Yeah, I don't care about draft picks either, but Cal does. In fact, Cal sacrificed seasons at UK and is killing his reputation as a coach, all for the purpose if getting kids drafted, that were getting drafted anyway.

And here Pope is, making players better by playing team ball and putting them in positions to succeed on the bright stage.

So what I'm saying is, Pope is doing more to help these kids than Cal is and Pope is winning games too.

Looks like Therio, Boogie and Big Z (who I think transfers to Illinois) will depart for the NBA. All ranked above our guys.

No, you have to have actual first round picks to win a title. 2012, 98, 96 and 78 all had at least 2.
I haven’t looked at the rosters for all the final four teams for the last few years, but I don’t believe that either San Diego St. or Florida Atlantic had draft picks on their rosters in 2023. Regardless, I certainly wouldn’t deny that a team has to have good players to chase a championship. Coaching is not going to be enough, experience is not going to be enough AND “talent” (whatever that means to the person using the word) is not going to be enough.

But if you have good enough players to get to a Final Four it’s likely one or more of your players will be drafted – usually even in the 1st round I suppose - although, a top teams best player may be drafted below a lesser teammate (or even not at all) due to the lesser player’s age and perceived upside (i.e., ceiling based on perceived talent).

What I’m confident about, however, is that no team today needs a 5-star freshman, regardless of where he goes or is projected to go in the NBA draft, to win a title. In fact, I believe if not properly used and constrained the 5-star OAD freshman will be counterproductive to winning a title due to the lack of maturity, experience, skill refinement, basketball IQ, etc. They should almost always be a supplemental piece, not expected/allowed to try to carry a team.

LOL, look at Virginia's 2019 roster. They won a title with Jack Salt down low and some unathletic guards. They also ran at a turtle's pace.

Give me a locked in veteran roster any day.

Heck, NC State last year. There were no stars and they had Kung Fu Panda down low. They stunk most of the year, made the FF.

We are talking about UK title teams, idc about other programd. UK basketball needs at least a couple of high level players to win a title or make a final four. It's a proven stat on every final four and title team the past 50 years. That doesn't mean it provide an outlier at some point. It can happen.

And it doesn't need to be a high level freshmen. It can be experienced guys like a Knecht type transfer.

You have me confused on this one. Maybe I'm not picking up what you're putting down. Are you saying UK has to have high level players, like bigtime 5* kids to get to a FF, or win a title, but other schools don't? If so, why would that be?

Wouldn't it be the coach that dictates that? Cal had to have extreme talent, but Tubby won it with really good veterans. Some got a cup of coffee in the pros, but there was no John Wall on that 98 team.

It comes down to who gets hot at the right time. That's what happened in 98, 2011 and 2014 and UConn 2011 and 2014. Actually there are a ton of examples of teams that got hot and rode that to a title.
